📣📣BIG NEWS:📣📣
I'll be accepting (a) graduate student(s) this cycle to come work with me at Pitt starting Fall 2025!!!
If you want to work on understanding and improving people's intergroup experiences, please apply!
Info about the lab:
For my birthday my labs WROTE ME AN R PACKAGE that spits out happy birthday messages and makes me guess who each one is from and SHAMES ME when I get them wrong. These people are NERDS and need to be stopped. (They're also so so so nice and I love them.)
Got my first R&R on a first-authored paper this morning! My first reading of the review was "sure it's technically a R&R but these reviews are so major I should probably leave academia in disgrace" but then I had coffee and re-read it and it turns out it's fine. 🤷♂️
To celebrate Pride, I made an R package full of palettes from different Pride flags! Introducing: PridePalettes!
Info for installing PridePalettes:
For example, here's a barchart I made using the colors of the Philadelphia People Of Color Pride Flag:
I’m so excited to share that I’ll be starting in Fall 2024 as an Assistant Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh! (

I’ve been a long-time admirer of this department, so I couldn’t be happier to be joining it!
Today’s tally of wins and losses:
• SSHRC Doctoral Grant: Won 🤩
• SPSP Symposium: Rejected 🙅♂️
• SPSP Poster: Accepted 💃
Overall I’m calling today a win BECAUSE GUYS SSHRC IS FUNDING ME FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS!!!
📣📣📣Job & life update: I am beside myself with happiness that next year, I'll be starting a SSHRC postdoc with the incomparable
@NeilLewisJr
@Cornell
! Neil has already been so wonderful to work with; I can't wait for the work we'll do together!
Last year, to celebrate Pride, I made an R package with color palettes from different Pride flags and functions to generate Pride flags in R. This year, I did nothing because I'm EXHAUSTED. 🤷♂️ So, I'm reposting PridePalettes from last year to wish you all a happy Pride! 🌈🌈🌈

When I got a puppy in December THE FIRST THING I DID was put my undergrad RA experience in an infant lab to use and start studying her. The second thing I did was present the results to my lab (pictured).
How on EARTH is it almost SPSP again? SPSP is literally the most recent thing I did. I have not left my apartment since SPSP. Absolutely hate that time has continued to advance.
As of yesterday, this law came into effect and conversion therapy is now illegal in Canada. I’ve been struggling for the right words to describe my feelings but I haven’t found them yet. Thanks to all who fought for this.
Just noticed this devastating note on the psych job wiki ()... looks like future job cycles will have to migrate somewhere new.
Everybody pour one out for the Psychology Job Wiki.
I'm hiring a full-time lab manager to join me at Pitt starting late summer 2024. Come study intergroup relations, stigma, and interventions with me!
Please circulate widely and feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Two new papers out now in Psych Science (
@PsychScience

@socscimed
) look at why people who conceal their stigmatized identities often experience worse health.
SocSci&Med paper:

Belonging interventions can help narrow educational inequalities, but they don't work all the time.
In a paper out now in
@ScienceMagazine
, a team of us asked where, and for whom, a belonging intervention can increase persistence through college.

This is just a completely unbelievable choice! Well… you’re about to make another department the luckiest it’ll be in a generation. I hope wherever that is becomes a happy home for you and yours.
Does anyone know of a good, undergraduate-friendly "how to read a research article"-type piece that's relevant to (quantitative) research in psychology?
All week I’ve been lethargic, headachy, and WILDLY unproductive. This morning, I happened to read the coffee bag I bought last weekend as I was brewing coffee and I—
I will be taking no questions please respect my privacy during this challenging and humiliating time.
PSYCH TWITTER: As part of a project I'm working on, I want to get a sense of what different subfields of psychology perceive as their top empirical journal. For my purposes, I'm not asking which journal is your favorite, I'm asking which one is dominant/carries clout. (1/12)
Shout out to my amazing advisor
@page_gould
for being named a
@SPSPnews
Fellow today! Truly the most kind, generous, principled, hardworking, and brilliant person I know. Completely unparalleled in all those domains and more. This honor couldn’t be more well-deserved.
Twitter hivemind: I'm looking for professional development topics for lab meetings that would be appropriate for undergraduate audiences. Things like applying to graduate school, open science, picking research topics, etc. Any ideas?
It turns out that my partner and I (despite growing up in separate cities and not meeting until our twenties) were at the same birthday party when we were five.
In a new paper (in press at PSPB), we (
@page_gould
@ChasteenLab
) find individual differences in which of their identities people experience as concealable & relationships between these differences and concealment frequency and efficacy.
I ❤️ this paper; please give it a read!
I successfully defended my master’s today and my adorable lab is the very very best! I don’t think I could have done it in the absence of wonderful colleagues like these.
Introducing Here & Queer: a virtual & in-person social event for LGBTQ+ folks at

2022! The goal is to create connections among early-career LGBTQ+ social and personality psychologists. Express interest in attending here:

SAGE Methods tweeted a transphobic lie yesterday and has had nothing to say about it besides this. This is embarrassing for SAGE but it’s not even the tip of the iceberg for transphobia in science. Brilliant people are pushed out of science because we don’t know how to act right.
Our earlier tweet was factually inaccurate, for which we apologize. It was sent without sufficient context checking. ONS guidance for Census 2021 questions on sex and gender identity can be found here:
Today I learned: If you're working from home and the first thing on your to-do list is grading:
•You will never get out of bed
•You will never start working
•You will discover horrifying new depths of low motivation
How's everyone else's quarantine going?
Super excited and grateful for the research money from
@SPSSI
but also please go check out the whole list of winning projects. This whole cohort makes me excited about the future of psychology. 🎉🎉🎉
Some of you may recall that I recently learned to cross-stitch. It is a very good non-social media distraction from... everything. Somehow it took 5 months, but I made this dog. Enjoy.
We never talk about the quality of departmental admin when choosing grad schools. The grad administrator in my department (s/o to Kathleen Cook) is *amazing* at her job. Having her around takes so much stress and hassle off my plate. I'm happier and more productive as a result.
New paper recently accepted at JESP with

Teaser: We think bad things about people who conceal.

New paper out in
@NatRevPsych
with the one and only
@NeilLewisJr
! In it, we ask, "When and why do people conceal their identities?" Our answer? It depends! Person, identity, and context all come together to dynamically determine how people present their identities.
On a walk today, Lily (who is named after Lily Tomlin) met ANOTHER dog named Lily, ALSO named after Lily Tomlin. The other Lily was being walked by a 40-something man (who, like me, is gay) and it was like looking at my and Lily’s future selves.
Our virtual social for early-career LGBTQ+ social and personality psychologists is about to get started. So grateful to
@SPSPnews
for giving us some funding to get this off the ground ❤️

Since I’m going to conferences soon I need y’all to recognize me. This is what I look like now. Internalize it. Come say hi! I’m the opposite of
@JinXunGoh
please actually come say hi!
It seemed inevitable and I think it's definitely the right choice, but the announcement that
#SPSP2021
will be virtual next February is a real gut-punch nonetheless. We're in this for the long haul. Strap in, everybody.
Y’all don’t even know how great my advisors have been.
I’ll probably write a longer thread about this one day, but
@page_gould
and
@ChasteenLab
have been extremely real ones these past 5 years. I would not trade them for the universe.
Everybody! After an absolutely fun, fascinating, and fabulous 5 years, Joel Le Forestier is now✨Dr. Le Forestier!✨🤩🥳💞👏

Who wins or loses has very real consequences and I care about that deeply. But even if Biden wins, it shouldn’t be this close. The only moral response to what Tr*mp has done is a landslide victory for Biden. That we’re not seeing that feels like a loss.

Hey completely not related to anything at all who knows of good alternatives to MTurk/Prolific? Bonus points if it has lots of options for pre-screening and is user-friendly.
Beyond thrilled that next year I'll be joining
@UofT
to start grad school with the amazing
@page_gould
and the amazing (but Twitterless) Alison Chasteen!
Now that my virtual

poster session is done, for anyone still wanting to check it out, I'm pretty sure it's still up on Whova (Fr-659), and you can also find it on OSF, here: . Come find out about how people perceive concealers!
Y’all are like “ESP isn’t real” okay then explain how yesterday-Joel had the foresight to bake a bunch of cupcakes for today-Joel who got a paper rejected and then really wanted cupcakes??? Damn y’all really can’t handle the truth 🙄
On doctor's orders, I'm trying to reduce my coffee consumption to 1 cup/day. Not to be dramatic but this is going indescribably poorly and I'm about to drop out of grad school. I'm specifically soliciting advice but will also accept pity.
Someone in my program is giving their first department talk tomorrow and is super nervous. A labmate is staying late today just to be around for emotional support while talk prep finishes up. I’m so happy to be in a program with such generous, supportive colleagues.

The package also has a second function, flag(), which generates pre-made Pride flags using ggplot2. Just tell it which flag you want, and it spits it out! So, flag("trans_pride") generates this:
Every single year when I renew my SPSP membership, my bank flags it as a suspicious transaction, freezes my credit card, and locks me out of online banking. It's a really fun holiday tradition I've had going for three years now.
It’s true! We’re doing queer things at SPSP! This is such a fab team that I’m so lucky to be part of, but an extra special shout-out definitely needs to go to our fearless leader
@stephanietepper
for getting the team together and keeping the ball rolling forward!
I closed the bedroom door with my partner and dog on the other side so I could practice my job talk (👀) and halfway through the talk he sends me this. Something something something attachment issues.
We had this really dramatic rainbow in Toronto yesterday. It got me thinking:
#Pride
is such an amazing time of year for arresting the cops who murdered Breonna Taylor!
I’ve been to a lot of conferences/interviews/etc. recently and don’t have the money to buy new clothes (
#gradschool
) so if you see me at SPSP repeating identical outfits from something else no you didn’t.
Interested in stigma and/or concealment? I'm presenting a bunch of stuff at
#SPSP2023
! Come see!
First off, I'm presenting in a symposium in the main conference on individual differences in people's subjective experiences of identity concealability.
🧵
“Hey where are you?”
“I’m on Peachtree.”
“You’re going to need to be more specific.”
#SPSP2018
is off to a great — if navigationally challenging — start.
Interested in intergroup contact? Attending SPSP? Check out our symposium! With the amazing Zi Ting You,
@tdehrone
, and Marie Isabelle Weißflog!
<fomo-based motivation> According to Whova, it'll be a highly-attended session! You don't want to miss out! </fomo-based-motivation>
This paper is now online at PSPB:
Come for the cool graphs, stay for the thoughtful consideration of things we shouldn't assume about people's experiences on the basis of their group memberships alone.
In a new paper (in press at PSPB), we (
@page_gould
@ChasteenLab
) find individual differences in which of their identities people experience as concealable & relationships between these differences and concealment frequency and efficacy.
I ❤️ this paper; please give it a read!
The long-awaited Ithaca move happens tomorrow! If you have any Ithaca/fingerlakes/upstate NY recommendations (e.g., things to do, places to eat/drink, good places to work, literally anything else), send them my way!
Thrilled to announce that scam emails from fake journal editors have progressed from inviting me to submit my "supremely extraordinary research" to inviting me to join editorial boards, which is appropriate given my career stage and "eminent status in the field."
We found the intervention works 📢 only when the context gave students opportunities to belong 📢
So, a belonging intervention can help, but it doesn't get you off the hook from doing the hard work of creating an inclusive culture at your school.

Just discovered that deciding not to do something and crossing it off my to do list gives me 100% as much satisfaction as actually accomplishing it would have. Really looking forward to all the other things I’m going to decide not to do just for the thrill.
@PaoloAPalma
Once per year the social psych gays should choose a senior academic woman to send a letter to informing her that’s she a gay icon just to see what she does with her new power
Since moving into a new apartment in August I've been engaging in escapism by decorating. The newest addition was this set of maps I made in R that hang above my desk!
And they're PINK!

Not to flex on ya too much but I just completed the crucial read-the-decision-letter stage of an R&R and am now moving on to the pout-about-it-for-a-while-until-I-remember-what-self-esteem-feels like stage. So I'd say things are really moving along for me.
@HehmanLab
Sure but there are probably ways to express this that don't use derogatory terms for members of the LGBTQ+ community and don't liken members of the LGBTQ+ community to things you'd prefer we get rid of.
I was trying to write a tweet about how writing this manuscript is super humbling because this draft is SO BAD but I couldn't figure out how to phrase it and that's how I found out that I'm too bad a writer to write a tweet about how bad a writer I am. 🤦🤦🤦
Finally put all the websites I've been neurotically checking (journal reviews, job boards) into an R function that opens them all at once so instead of looking at one at a time I can do them all at once like ripping off a bandaid. Sent thoughts and prayers for my wellbeing.
Presenting two posters tomorrow (Thursday) on beliefs about identity concealability and intergroup relations. Stop by at:
