Members of the Nats media determined that they had used 19 third baseman since Anthony Rendon left.
So I looked this up.
The Angels have used 28 third basemen since they signed Rendon.
So, on a suicide squeeze, if the hitter can get the ball on the ground in play, it's basically impossible for the defense to stop the run from scoring.
Unless you do this.
Pretty crazy how MLB has run a 20-team tournament over two weeks on two sides of the globe and it comes down to the exact scenario everyone wanted before it started.
Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter Ippei Mizuhara had to resign because otherwise he couldn’t have talked to Ohtani during the lockout. He was a staff member. The
#Angels
rehired him.
Phil Nevin is a genius.
He gave Shohei Ohtani the "hit a double" sign and then told Mike Trout to "hit a two-run homer."
The Angels are up 2-0 in the 1st.
By the way, Ohtani already knew that he had a torn UCL, potentially costing him hundreds of millions of dollars and changing the course of his career, when he had this exchange on the field with Elly De La Cruz.
For what it's worth:
I was informed by AM830 (Angels team-owned radio network) that I'm no longer welcomed back on the their "Beat Reporter Roundtable" program because I bring "negativity" to an "up-beat show."
I was told the decision was made by team president John Carpino.
Shohei Ohtani hit HR No. 42, and it's one I've never seen.
He lost his helmet during the swing and circled the bases helmet-less.
It's 1-0 Angels in the first.
Just talked to Mike Trout. He said his phone is blowing up and it’s all an exaggeration. He said he will play again this year. Although he acknowledges he will have to stay on top of maintenance of his back, he’s not concerned about his career.
I have talked to several of Ohtani’s former teammates today. None wanted to be quoted other than to say they were surprised.
One consensus is that Ohtani never paid attention to other sports, so it’s unlikely Ippei was betting on his behalf.
Albert Pujols will not get the ball from his 2,000th RBI. The fan left the stadium, turning down all kinds of offers from the Tigers and Angels. He can't sell it now, because it wasn't authenticated.
I am disappointed in myself that I neglected to point this out yesterday....
Shohei Ohtani struck out reigning MVP Jose Abreu on Saturday and hit a HR against reigning Cy Young Shane Bieber on Tuesday.
I've covered baseball for 22 years, and Tyler Skaggs was one of the best guys I covered. I always enjoyed talking to him, with or without the recorder on. He was a great guy. He will be missed. My heart goes out to all in his family, and his baseball family.
Jared Walsh, who made a sliding catch in LF even though he's never played there in the majors: "I hope Joe Maddon wasn't watching. I like first base a lot more than left field."
Anthony Rendon just said he has had a fractured tibia this whole time. He just found out it was fractured a few weeks ago. He said he doesn’t know why the Angels didn’t announce that.
Logan O’Hoppe said he will start taking regular overhand BP tomorrow. He has been catching from a machine. “I feel like I could play tonight,” O’Hoppe said.
#Angels
Please take a moment today to remember Tyler Skaggs and think of his family. I he was one of the most approachable, honest and friendly players I covered in 22 years.
Mike Trout was pretty upset about a pitch that buzzed by his helmet in the 9th inning. “If you can’t pitch inside, don’t pitch inside. And if you’re going to hit me, hit me in the ribs. Don’t hit me in the head.”
Worth pointing out that the Rangers handled this entire situation with the utmost class and respect. From the front office to the players to the ballpark mood.
Shohei Ohtani's 30th HR traveled 493 feet, which would be his longest HR ever. (If it doesn't get changed.)
His 15 HRs this month adds to his Angels record for a single month.
It's 5-1.
Shohei Ohtani’s agent, Nez Balelo, said that Ohtani is still exploring treatment possibilities. He conceded that “some type of procedure” will be necessary but it may not be Tommy John surgery.
Also, he said Ohtani will be ready to hit “when the bell rings” in 2024.
RE: Angels lineup.
Neto is not playing, but we don't know yet if he's on the IL. The clubhouse opens in 30 minutes and at that point we'll see if anyone else is here.
Re: Ohtani. I am a little surprised he's playing. Maybe they just updated his software overnight.
The Angels took 3 of 4 from the Rangers, with Shohei Ohtani carrying them to the series-deciding victory.
“The boys are fired up. It’s a different atmosphere, even in the dugout during the games. Hopefully, we can continue this all the way through.”
Mike Trout just talked. He was very emotional, clearly frustrated by being unable to play.
Re: his future with the Angels. He said his talks with management, which he has every year, would be private but he expected to be “wearing an Angels uniform in the spring.”
The Angels announced that Ohtani is on the 10-day IL with an oblique injury and he will miss the rest of the season.
That’s the first piece of the story. Perry Minasian expected to fill in the rest of the blanks this afternoon.
Shohei Ohtani is pitching in a minor league game on Friday in Tempe. Then Opening Day in Oakland.
Patrick Sandoval is pitching in a minor league game on Sunday in Tempe, then game 2 of the regular season.
Mike Trout is going straight back to Anaheim for the freeway series.
I admit I am weirdly obsessed with the oddity of what the Angels did tonight.
Everyone in their starting lineup, including the pitcher, had made his debut with the Angels. None of them had ever worn another big league uniform.
And they won.
Shohei Ohtani underwent a procedure today in Los Angeles. A statement released by his agent didn't specify the exact procedure, but it said that Ohtani will be ready to hit on Opening Day 24 and pitch in 2025.
Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the procedure.
Former
#Angels
employee Eric Kay has been charged with possession and intent to distribute fentanyl, the drug found in Tyler Skaggs body when he died last year, according to a US District Court document.
The
#Angels
agreed to a $30M one year deal with Shohei Ohtani for 2023. Ohtani was already under control for the season, so this just avoids arbitration.
It’s the largest salary ever for an arb-eligible player. (Betts $27M)
Raisel Iglesias:
"We are a family. That's going to help us to be more united. We're going to be for sure playing better and fighting every single game so we can make it to the playoffs."
I don't think he literally meant "fighting" every game, but that would be entertaining.
The news that you might have suspected is now official.
Kurt Suzuki is retiring at the end of the season. The
#Angels
catcher played 16 years in the majors, won a WS, made an ASG.
Phil Nevin, on Shohei Ohtani:
"He's the best baseball player I think anybody has ever seen, to be honest. I really believe that. All around. I don't think there's any argument you can make that he's not the best baseball player that's played the game."
My understanding is Ohtani took this approach (massively deferring his salary to keep team payroll flexible) with all the teams he negotiated with
So this wasn't a Dodgers-exclusive thing. Seems like he thought this was the best way to win in his new destination
