As someone too old to be targeted by clout chasing kids, I'm amused at this round of "new gen rulezz" vs. "the OGs will strike back".
Reminder to all who are partaking this time around: The person who will be the best SF6 player is either 17 years old right now or is Tokido.
I've said for years, you only really love a game if you can get destroyed and still have fun.
Bill Wellman smashing me 50-3 in MvC2 and talking the spiciest trash proved that I *LOVED* that game because it's still a happy memory.
If you're not there yet, you just like winning.
I have to say, Capcom missing their countdown time because they couldn't fit 7 matches into 5 hours is both peak Capcom and peak Tournament Standard Time all at once.
Man look. If you're in Vegas, buy iDom a drink, a burger, a foot massage, whatever he wants.
This man shouldn't pay for a damn thing until he gets back to NY.
I've tried to avoid posting personal/political things for a variety of reasons but...
When COVID started I owed about 37k in student debt and was mostly just paying interest.
It's down to 24k right now and hearing today's news that 20k will be gone...
I'm almost in tears.
It's the attention to detail that gets me.
They made Jared Dudley Servbot and made Caruso Mega Man. Whoever did this, please take your credit, I just want to give you your respect.
People are going to make jokes, but credit to
@SFLShade
for not swinging back and to the bystanders for defusing/stopping the situation early, and to
@Jebailey
for quick action with the ejection.
One guy acted out, but focus on all the people who did the right thing.
Maybe it's mean to say, but I genuinely believe fighting game players are just built differently.
Like after spending 25+ years playing competitively, you can just sense which of the "new blood" will stick around and be a problem just based on how they handle losses early.
i’m ngl i don’t have empathy for and don’t have a mentality to know how to help people who want to give up fighting games on day 1. like i think it is just true that it isn’t for you, but why do people expect to instantly be winning on something they are NEW in????
I'm dead serious when I say this. Keeping a whole arena of people watching live/hundreds of thousands watching from home entertained during 10 minutes of downtime is amazing.
@Sajam
and
@IFCYipeS
are putting in ridiculous work here.
Could not be more impressed.
Leffen winning Guilty Gear after coming from being a winner in Smash is literally one of the biggest achievements I can think of.
Leffen is one of the GOATs of fighting games, no question.
Not wading into today's SF drama, but just wanted to say that it's OK to get emotional, whether it's after fulfilling a major goal or just anything.
I won a free burrito from texting in a code during Evo and I got choked up. We celebrate our wins when we get them, that's all.
Honestly this is why I fell off and it's a good thing.
In early 2001 I could be a top player at MvC2 because like 9 people understood the basics of how Storm/Sentinel worked and by an accident of geography I was one of them.
We're now able to play games at a much higher level.
This is the most "back in my day" boomer take I have ever heard.
if you aren't nice at the new games, then that's it. don't blame it on the game being easier. information is more accessible now.
anyone who takes this opinion seriously will always and forever plateau, on god.
I turn on the Marvel stream and we're going over Evo 2011.
GF: "Is this where you get grabbed? You're about to get grabbed here, right?"
GODDAMMIT I WON THIS TOURNAMENT AFTER THE GRAB. I WON THE NEXT SET 3-0. AUUUUUGH!
Kakeru did the setup with the 2 portals and drive impact where if you react "correctly" and DI back, the 2 explosions break your armor and AngryBird parried it.
I say again, I am not smart enough to play SF6, these guys have absolutely massive brains.
I should get inducted into the Evo hall of fame for my 2007 run at blackjack.
Forget winning Marvel that one time, turning 1 $25 chip off the floor into 6 months of rent money is my magnum opus.
SF6 1st patch Ken is going to be one of those characters we mention 10 years down the line like "hey remember when we had to deal with THAT guy for a solid year until they finally fixed him?"
People have dunked on this guy enough, but I just want to say that Tokido casually pulling up to CEO and winning Marvel is one of the handful of biggest flexes we've ever had in the FGC.
@ItsTimeThis
Has Tokido, Arslan, Knee, and other big names done anything outside of their respective games? The only one that comes to mind is Punk 🤷🏽♂️
Went to the zoo today to talk about the berserker slash nerf with my fellow Leo players. We'll wait patiently for the next beta to see if we want to stick with the character, but we're both pretty interested in picking up May.
Whenever I see things like this, my first thought is never "if only more low tier heroes had made it through..." my mind goes straight to: "I wish a MorriDoom player or ApologyMan would have made top 6 and give them something to REALLY get upset about".
I am a petty man.
I can have Ryu vs. Kazuya vs. Mario vs. Sephiroth vs. Terry Bogard vs. Pikachu vs. Pac-Man vs. Simon Belmont vs. Link vs. Megaman in Smash...BUT WE COULDN'T GET CAPTAIN AMERICA VS. WOLVERINE IN MVC:I.
I've probably used this joke before but I'm still this freaking mad about it.
Floe was one of my first real friends in the FGC, someone who welcomed me into his home and was always welcome in mine.
One of the few bright spots in this week is seeing the outpouring of love and good memories people are sharing. These happy memories mean a lot right now.
Old man rant about tier lists incoming. For a community that depends on tier lists for content, we're really bad at making them.
Seeing tier lists with huge S/S- rows just ticks me off. If there are 10+ characters in your S tier, there are actually 0 characters in your S tier.
Things I can say now that I'm old and not competing.
Guys, if you're in top 3 of Capcom Cup, you NEED to split the pot. Play out the match and do your best so it looks good obviously, but take the split.
If you lose a 900k money match you WILL regret it the rest of your life.
I stayed up all night watching a game I don't even play anymore.
A major Capcom announcement leaked.
Top players fired off salty tweets.
Daigo in top 8.
The major tournament experience is back for competitors but it's back for stream monsters also. My world feels complete again!
With Sora going into Smash, The Discourse seems to be about how Kingdom Hearts games are all trash.
I mean, yeah I guess, but I never expected them to be gaming masterpieces. I get to play a game where Donald Duck casts omega flare on Sephiroth. Just for that, series is 10/10.
This is why even though I think Honda is not the best tournament character, he's getting smashed with the nerf hammer in the first balance patch (whenever that is).
This is the Sheeva stomp video of SF6. And man did Sheeva ever pay for her sins after that.
Why would you design a character like this?
When Punk can even lose to this in tourney, I wonder how many casuals/lower level players just straight up quit because of stuff this.
Other than "take you for a ride" I genuinely don't remember MvC2's actual music at this point.
For a full 10 years of my life an MvC2 match would always start with either the trumpet opening to Ricky Martin's "Livin La Vida Loca" or some Linkin Park track.
“People thought MvC2 music was BAD?!??”
Yes, they absolutely did, to the point that hacking the game to replace the OST was normal and expected in the player community for roughly a decade. Lots of folks had their own MvC2 mixtape
After 20 years, Evo has had some pretty epic moments.
Before
#Evo2022
, take a trip down FGC memory lane with the Blast from the Past playlist by
@freshcut
.
We hope you all are ready for the next series of historic matchups this weekend at Evo 2022!
I think the entire top 6 in SF6 is 0-for-Sunday at reacting to corner drive impact in time. (Partial credit to AngryBird for parrying one)
Fellow slow reactors rejoice, we're not alone.
The craziest/most ridiculously cool & amazing part of FF7 Remake is that so many things/places look EXACTLY the way I imagined them 20+ years ago. Given that the originals were mostly poorly rendered polygons, it blows my mind.
It makes me feel like the game was made just for me
One of my great FGC memories was at B4. Guys were trying to have a Soul Calibur discussion but nobody knew the move names so it ended up with 20 guys in a parking lot acting out the moves and explaining the interactions.
Nobody has ever known move names for 3D games!
Lv.4 Ammo dump (400% more bullets)
Lv.2 defenseless (10% chance for each attack to be unblockable)
Lv 4 Amped up (Amp'd attacks do +40%)
Lv.2 Bill of health (25% more damage at full health)
Lv.3 Mix it up (Next combo does 3% more for each hit in the previous combo)
If I had ONE (1) US dollar for every time someone has said either:
-I miss the arcades
-I miss MvC2/CvS2/MAS sticks
-I wish we still had SRK instead of Discord
-It's not as fun anymore since (2000, 2009, 2015, others)
I could quit my job right now and retire.
Dawned on me that no one ever says "I miss X era" when referencing Fighting Games / RTS's as a period of the time when the game was better (the time period could've been better).
Thought about this after people asked me to watch earlier seasons of league because it was "better
I learned more about some dudes playing a FT50 in MvC2 than I did by being their friend for 5+ years.
In a casual friendship it can take YEARS before you learn how someone reacts to pain/stress/fear/anger. You may never get there.
In MvC2 it only takes a couple hours.
So there I am, washing dishes in my uncle's pizza parlor in 1991 and I see the coin-op guy put in this new video game called Street Fighter 2.
...
And then 33 years later executives in work meetings will randomly ask me about if Bison looks like he's going to be top tier.
Horrible news.
I can't be at Evo, and our IT team bodied Crowdstrike this morning so I actually have to work today instead of watching streams all day.
Have fun everyone who is competing, attending, and/or has a weaker IT team than we do.
I'm not sure about online Evo given that basically all of the big name games (Smash Ultimate, SFV, T7, SamSho, DBFZ) all range from "pretty rough online" to "borderline unplayable outside of optimal conditions".
Lv.2 Special Delivery (Specials do 20% more)
Lv.3 Point of Attack (Physical attacks have 30% chance to be Mighty).
Theoretically if you have lv.4 augments for everything you can be doing almost double (!!!) the damage.
I love getting dumb with this game even if I can't play it.
Playing MK11 after work against some guy with his mic on. My partner shouted from the other room,
Her: "Is that guy insulting you in your game?"
Me: "Yeah he has his mic on."
Her: "Is he telling you to just block?"
Me: "Yes."
Her: "...you should probably listen"
Thanks honey...
100% agree with this. I play a lot early in the morning when I wake up. If ranked is dead I'll hop in the battle hub and even at 3am there's a full lobby of people playing avatar battles and talking trash to each other.
Every day.
They know what they're doing.
I think the reason Capcom is going all in on avatar costumes is because there’s basically a sub community of folks who just LOVE avatar battles.
Seriously, hop in a Battle Hub, there’s always a bunch of people just grinding avatar games. They take it pretty seriously, it’s wild.
Good news if you don't like Luke.
After this week, the nerf that Capcom puts on Luke in the upcoming major patch (not the mini one coming with Ed) is going to look like an NRS nerf.
This character is getting deleted.
I come back to Marvel for a couple weeks and the entire timeline is posting anti-Phoenix tech.
COME ON GUYS, LET ME PLAY. I JUST WANT TO ROB YOU, WHY YOU ALL GOTTA FIGHT BACK???
I make a point of not talking about this too much but for the record I definitely regret this popoff and dumb/"edgy" jokes I made as a kid. It felt good in the moment and I remember feeling really pissed off at him at the time, but it just feels foolish in retrospect.
We got a lot of heat during the aftermath of that Grudge Match back then.
I know times have changed and some content might be looked at differently now...
We took many risks and won/lost many battles with the type of content we put out there.
If you're not taking risks,
I know it's not going to happen, but man...what if Evo announced MvC2 or MvC3 was coming back tonight...
I would literally put my PTO request in at work that very minute.
Bison is the first SF6 character I'm playing seriously without a credible reversal and...wow.
I'll never underestimate how important having a reversal is in this game again. The amount of fake pressure this character just has to accept is maddening.
I'm not upset that Jake Paul is the last SFV character.
I'm upset that he's the 1st SF6 character meaning I not only have to watch him all of this year, but for the next 6-8 years as well.
I will literally be FIFTY GODDAMN YEARS OLD before Luke is gone. Jesus Christ.
I don't want to be too negative, but in the span of about 40-50 matches on T8's beta, I've had at least 10 completely unplayable/laggy matches. I can go weeks in SF6 without any matches as bad as those.
I'm slightly concerned, since it seems like I'm not alone here.
The SF6 Demo has a versus mode...but it only has Luke/Ryu unlocked.
We're about to have some galaxy level Luke/Ryu players on June 2, I'll tell you that.
It hurts my ego a little bit to get smoked by 17 year olds who literally weren't even born the first time I was washed at games, sure.
But it genuinely makes me happy to see how fast people learn and how people from literally anywhere in the world can be top players and compete.
2 weeks is about the normal time for people to turn on a game so SF6 negativity is expected.
Personally I really like the game. Not everything is perfect, but it's very good for a first version.
I think I'm going to be bad at this game but it's still a lot of fun for me.
I've never cared as much about a game before and I almost certainly never will care this much again.
MvC2 took me for a ride; UMvC3 took me around the world. If only Capcom didn't nerf me specifically...
10 years ago today, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was originally released on PlayStation 3 & Xbox 360 at NA. It was developed by Capcom/Eighting and published by Capcom.
Making low tier a part of my identity in the 3s/CvS1/early CvS2/MvC2 days was legitimately one of the dumbest things I did in that era and I did a lot of dumb things.
Life is short, games are for fun, pick Phoenix.
I did it to myself for years with Q in 3S in the 00s. I hated that he sucked but I convinced myself that continuing to main him was about ETHICS, about being MYSELF, about LIFE even. And so I made myself have a bad time in my supposed hobby. Like, dude. It's just a video game man
Everyone 30-45 still knows exactly what the Colossus scream from the X-Men beat em up sounds like. It was randomly 100 decibels louder than the rest of the game.
Something people kind of talk around but rarely directly acknowledge.
When it comes to fighting games, there will come a point where effort becomes a finite resource for you. Not just effort as a function of time, but effort as a commodity itself.
Like...pre-COVID I just kind of assumed I was going to carry this around for the next 10-15 years of my life and that was just gonna be how it is.
The fact that I'll basically be debt free at the end of the year...dunno how to process that yet. Just feeling really thankful.
Bought KOFXV. I haven't put in effort into a KOF game since 2002 and even then I wasn't very good so I have no delusions that I'm going to be good/tournament worthy for it.
I just miss learning new fighting games. We'll see how well I do!
Between the new Marvel collection, FF7 Rebirth, SF6, a new Mana game coming out, on and on, I've never been happier with gaming than I am right now.
It may not be ideal that this era of video games is aimed squarely at a 44 year old man who misses being 21, but I'll take it.
Like 100 people have asked me why I've had the mask on 99% of the trip. Whether COVID or the old standard Evola that everyone caught every year back in the day, I'm not having that this year, I've got client meetings all week next week.
You won your Evo medal in 10 frame delay and by unplugging your router. I won my Evo medal in person and by Firebrand unblockabling the best Marvel players in the world.
We are not the same.
Also since we're talking about "that", it is true that we were approached to go on Tosh.0 a couple years later. I don't know what they were going to do, if it was going to be a recreation or a talk show segment. My partner and I talked it over and we declined.
This is the problem with saving fan favorite/"DLC movers" for late in a game's lifespan.
Two years ago this would have held my interest in the game and kept me playing Strive, but with SF6 out, T8 in 7 weeks, and other games on my backlog, it's just too late.
This isn't real.
BUT
If MvC4 gets announced at Evo, I'm going to rip my clothes off and giddily run naked throughout the Mandalay Bay arena until security throws me out.
Doctor Doom can execute consecutive Photon Array Supers (given the right assist positioning). He can also do this WITHOUT an assist... stay tuned.

I still regret "playing it out" vs. Eddie Lee at B4 in a fairly meaningless match *TWENTY THREE YEARS AGO*.
For 1 million dollars I'm going to walk up to my opponent, put a big ol' smile on my face and re-enact the Nemo vs. Itazan handshake picture. And you should too.
Obligatory finals day arena shot. The crowd is good already and there's probably another thousand or so waiting to get through security.
It genuinely makes my heart happy to see the people supporting Marvel like this. I love this game and all you people so goddamned much.
What I'm learning from playing a bunch of Tekken recently at the scrub ranks where I belong.
EVERYONE is on wi-fi. EVERYONE. This is insane. Even MK11 doesn't have this many wi-fi players.
Like I remember first playing NuckleDu at CEO ~13 years ago at SFxT before anyone outside of FL really knew him. I lamed him out with Bison/Gief because that's how I play and I remember he got mad, but asked INSTANTLY for more games.
Right there, you knew, he was here long term.
My advice to all the young people in the scene is to remember that stuff on the internet is forever and you never know what's going to go viral. You might end up having people AT YOUR JOB OR IN PUBLIC ask about a random thing you said 10 years ago.
You know, hypothetically...
For people who used to be grinders/lab monsters it's a hard realization. That to enjoy fighting games at this stage of your life, you're really just looking for something that will allow you to have maximum fun with minimum effort.
We all become grappler players in the end...
Even though California just locked down, I'm considered "essential personnel" (healthcare) so I'm still going to work tomorrow.
I'm about to have the best 3 weeks of traffic in my entire life.
2nd hurts more than going 0-2. If I went 0-2 I could at least go home early and get dinner or something.
Getting 2nd meant spending all day and all night in an arcade to get smoked in grand finals with everyone watching.
My first Evo was from before they even called it Evo! This is B4 in summer 2000 in Folsom, CA. Super hype to be going back this year after a few years away from tournaments.
23+ years of choking and I got one more left in me!
Feel like I've been just dad-posting/unc-posting lately but I gotta say this is the best advice out there.
Because I did games/poker for roughly 10 years of my life, at 35 I was working the jobs I should have been doing at 25.
Next gen, please always have a job.
Seen a couple fgc posts about money and all I’ll say is
Get a job. You don’t need something fancy but you need a job. Even working a generic gig and putting some money away for 10 years makes a huge difference.
Don’t be 30 and only have professional gamer to put on your resume
Rocking out to Taylor Swift in the car at a stoplight and I turn my head to see a car full of teenagers all filming me with their phones.
I strongly suspect I'm about to be Instagram famous in about 3 hours or so.
LRT: I've tried to stay out of drama and not be salty/grumpy on twitter dot com lately, but seriously? HBox actually considered showing up to the venue while vomiting up blood in 2022?
DO I NEED TO POST THE PICTURE OF MARN'S LEG FROM EVO?
