Cool. Except it’s wrong. Shortages of varying degrees have been a fact of life here since Chavez. Seriously, how fucking hard is it for any US Dem official to get a basic briefing on this???

My husband brought me a milka bar in the middle of an edit and I brushed him off in the throes of work. I’m now crumpled on my couch. Your larger political point aside, people never ever say no to a spouse bearing chocolate it’s just dumb.
In small towns across America, kids are crawling under parked train cars to get to school on time.
Trains are blocking roads to schools for hours or even days at a time.
And they could start moving at any moment.

Yes EXCEPT that was but one of 3 moments in which Tom sidled up to a sibling to whisper in their ear. He’s keeping his options open. And you seen him go to the other 2 first (in order of probable succession!) so it’s clear what he’s doing
Yes this is the most mind-boggling thing. That’s the natural response of most people to children being hurt so what turned that off in these people? What in these men’s training made them collectively turn towards restraining parents from going in??
firmly believe that if you rounded up random adults off the street, gave them a gun and gave them the opportunity to stop a school shooting, even without training, a significant number would try it
@juliaioffe
He wasn’t merely expressing opinions. He was verbally abusing and threatening people who were doing their jobs. A brown man or woman making that type of public disturbance would’ve been tackled to the ground and arrested. They’ve been killed for less.
For all y’alls “it’s the Monroe Doctrine!!!”a bunch of thick presumably Russian men in camouflage uniforms arrived in the American hemisphere via Syria and everyone (from the Hands Off VZla!! crowd to Abrahms) seem pretty chill with it. Remarkable.
A little known secret is that Houston Bloomberg is the best place in Bloomberg to be. 🥹🥹life keeps pulling me elsewhere but grateful for the anchor Bloomberg has provided me here
My third final departure since 2011. If you’re hiring a writer or editor drop me a DM (unless you’re training AI to sound human and displace writers then stay very far away and think about your actions)
Houston emergency service is telling people somewhere in the city to stay inside, close their windows and not run the AC because of a chemical fire. It is 85° this morning before 11 am
In today’s crazy Caracas economics anecdote, local brand ice cream (the Neapolitan box)at the supermarket today cost equivalent to ~$60, more than the doctor consult and half of what I paid for an MRI today. Are they importing the milk of virgin French cows?
@hannahdreier
I was literally going through Twitter a few weeks ago wondering what Hannah was up to. I figured when you go quiet it’s because something astounding is about to drop.
I understand that regional cities always get ignored but vzla’s 2nd largest city, Maracaibo, & center of oil production hasn’t had power in almost 3 days. It’s sweltering there. Think Houston. Caracas got wire stories from a 3 hr blackout. Think it’s time for a Maracaibo story
Forgive me an earnest moment. I’m so proud and excited my heart hurts and yes also sad. The oldest of 3 that I had in 3.5 years he didn’t always get the best of me. Onward my beautiful boy
Sorry to my old peeps but it has to be said. No, Maynard, Midland is what Maturin once was. Caracas though could be a far more glorious Houston. Metaphors matter!
Many streets in even well-off Caracas neighborhoods are literal graveyards for cars whose owners can not afford to repair them. A blow out can mean the end of car ownership. Plants sprout from cars much younger than this. I have no idea how he keeps this old fella alive.
@evan7257
I am demanding a pro publica piece on this right now. Why the state emergency notification system is such a goddamn embarrassment and how much is it costing. I’ve been radicalized apparently
I’m the granddaughter of an immigrant who cleaned toilets when she arrived & retired comfortably from a factory (thank you Canada)For the few intlly who still see Venezuela in ideological terms something is very adrift when a purported socialist is mocking labor
After Maduro said that many Venezuelans who left for Miami are there "cleaning toilets", many are accurately pointing out that a Miami "toilet cleaner" makes more than a doctor in Venezuela.

I am very very angry about my friends’ children who spent the afternoon cowering inside locked closets And coming face-to-face with swat teams with assault weapons.
A city that once was considered the Venezuelan doppelgänger of Houston has been rocked by five days of looting. Most remaining businesses are shuttered and scavengers are still ripping anything they can out of the ruins. This is a Polar warehouse where Pepsi products were held.
Has anyone compiled how many Lat Am sons or daughters of a revolution have gotten their parents in trouble because they just can’t keep the yacht or the pink Ferrari off of Instagram?
Marco Rubio tweets about Vzla and can’t distinguish between the name of a journalist and the name of the dam. The incompetence that surrounds this unfortunate country is heartbreaking. US is finally paying attention and they put their biggest fucking idiots on the case

Mothers chat group today filled with conspiracy talk. Heights HS without AC. One mom said she “heard” HISD is not running the ACs over the weekend, which causes problems on Mon. One mom then wondered if this was Mike Miles trying to get his bond money. None of us put it past him.
I’ve yet to see a story explaining why they’re undertaking a pretty arduous journey from Chile, one of the wealthiest Lat Am nations, accepting of regional migrants and with established Haitian community, to an inhospitable border. Still so many questions
Some of the Haitians being removed from the U.S. border haven't lived in Haiti in years. They've been in Chile and other South American countries. Haiti now expects as many as six flights a day from the U.S., or nearly 1,000 people. via

Don’t totally disagree but curious. Why do leftists of certain ilk still fall back on “US just wants their oil” when Cuba, which puts nothing into the industry, isnt even providing healthcare, is an absolute parasite when it comes to Vzla oil. Time to update imperial paradigms.
No me parece que Trump sea el aliado ideal para ayudar a Venezuela. Es un corrupto, autoritario, ignorante, racista, misógina y xenófoba. A él solo le interesa el petróleo venezolano, no le importa para nada el pueblo venezolano.
Brilliant. Thanks for the pictograph. Through trial and error I had settled on marrón claro grande but had no idea how it differed from its two bookends.
(Love in the times of socialism.) “I love you more than the sound of water entering my house’s tank”👇👇 That’s ALOT of love and not normal love but a fevered, delirious, all-consuming one

This is infuriating. (Not directed toward the school district, but that our children must essentially be educated in prisons, because of the armed lunatics that we’re forced to cede all space to. )

If all the Trump news of the last 24 hrs were coming from a Lat Am country, US papers would be filled with analysts pontificating on potential for a coup and implications on regional stability. I know this is not a witty or original take but it just feels so profoundly weird.
Both my best friend in Caracas and former cleaning lady and her husband got vaccinated in the last two days. Neither had to pull any strings, digamos, though the latter did stand in line from 4:30am at la universidad bolivariana. Praised be something seems to be happening.
A few months ago, someone slipped me a copy of a grievance against a Harris County judge. I started digging, went down a data rabbit hole & ended up w/this story. One finding: 96% of the kids the cty sent to juvy prison last year were children of color.
Got Covid tested in Aug. They asked if I had insurance so I gave it to them. If I”d paid in cash w/ out insurance at site would’ve cost $150. I just saw my bill, they billed $650 and I pay $122. Saved $28 out of pocket but it feels like I took part in insurance fraud.

Every announced sanction- personal or economic- is always followed by a slew of commentators insisting such measures counterproductive & cement people to Maduro. So what’s the current thinking on why these talks are happening?
Meetings were held in Panama, DR & Bogota. And the plan was to avoid an unpalatable Latam-style coup but rather remove Maduro through a court ruling allowing military to save face. via
