Van Tate of KRQE reporting that Cibola’s much-buzzed about freshman guard, Amari Brown, is leaving the state and will move to Atlanta. Brown joins a list of kids who have left the state for greener pastures. Can’t say I blame them one bit. This state has failed them.
Struggling to find the right words today.
Austin Denton was with us all too briefly, a shooting star who burned brightly. His big heart and his passion for life leaves a mark on us all.
You did good, kiddo. I won’t ever forget you.
BREAKING: Albuquerque Journal has learned that the state will, in fact, be allowing fans for high school sporting events based on health color of a particular county.
This is developing. But I believe it will be 25 percent of a venue's capacity.
Outstanding news.
BREAKING: And now it’s official. Finally. APS been cleared to return to athletics. As I reported this morning, this development was anticipated and expected by Interim Superintendent Scott Elder.
I can tell you one thing the state had better think about changing FAST ... and that is allowing at least parents to view their kids' high school events. Absolutely no reason whatsoever fans can attend UNM baseball but not, for example, a high school football game. NO REASON.
We truly — and sadly — have reached the point that no place in ABQ is safe anymore. It’s absurd.
The national statistics bear this out: we live in one of the most violent and dangerous cities in this country.
It is infuriating, upsetting and depressing. An embarrassment.
I’d give anything not to be tweeting this news, but here it is:
The Albuquerque Journal has confirmed that Sandia High School baseball coach Chris Eaton has died.
Chris was only 34 or 35, I believe. This is sickening news and a gut wrenching loss.
They just formally announced Austin Denton as a member of La Cueva's athletic Hall of Fame during this halftime ceremony.
I still miss that kid very much. I think we all do.
I'd kinda like to suggest all APS athletes meet somewhere in the middle of the city, maybe at Del Norte or Sandia, and everyone can just throw their masks into a pile in some open space so we can start a giant bonfire. Hell, I'll show up, too.😂
Best thing I learned today: Josh Riordan, a freshman for Sandia Prep, pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Sundevils.
He did it while playing at complex named for his mother.
Just awesome.
For those of you who haven’t seen it, here is my column from Sunday morning. I appreciate all the text/email/Twitter feedback so far today. Wherever you stand on this.
Governor was wrong to wipe out non-contact fall sports

Interesting development... Los Lunas girls coach Marty Zeller made the call to move LL state quarterfinal home game against Cleveland on Tuesday from his gym, where no fans would be allowed, to Cleveland’s gym, which can permit fans. A truly selfless decision. 4:30 pm tip-off.
BREAKING: OK, there has been a major development.
The state told me just 5 minutes ago there was a "miscommunication" and that the mandatory mask wearing for outdoor sports athletes is NOT CORRECT.
They are saying now that it is a recommendation, not a mandate.
What a day.😂
These are awfully difficult words to write:
Hall of Fame basketball coach Mike Brown has died. He passed at about 3 this morning.
A tremendous coach, yes, but more than that, he was a fiercely devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor and friend.
This one cuts deep.
Milestone day for me. Although I worked many years at the ABQ Journal as a stringer covering prep sports, it took a while before I was officially hired full time.
That day was August 31, 1998.
25 year anny today! Time has absolutely flown by. It’s been a wonderful ride.
With the near record-breaking heat, my fervent wish is that someone from Santa Fe — who insists the masks remain — was actually brave enough to show their face at state tennis, so they’d have a close-up look at their handiwork. And so the kids could complain to them in person.
I am writing Chris Eaton's obituary story for Thursday's AJ. The news of his death is hitting many people extremely hard today, and it's heartbreaking to be writing about Chris in the past tense. He was an enormously popular man, a good son, brother, teacher, friend, coach.
SHE HAS DONE IT AGAIN.
Eldorado's Gianna Rahmer has just won the Nike XC Southwest regional race in suburban Phoenix.
On to nationals this eighth-grader from Hoover Middle School goes.
Her winning time today: 17 minutes, 0.58 seconds. She won the race by about 1 second.
From APS Superintendent Scott Elder just a minute ago:
"I call upon New Mexico PED to re-examine this concept; (a return to athletics) should not be linked solely to whether they are in school or not."
BREAKING: State just waived the 14-day waiting period for schools getting back into athletics. So APS won't have to wait until week of March 22 to start playing games, if I'm reading this right. Or Los Lunas/Valencia/Belen, either.
BREAKING: It was bound to happen, and it has. Journal has learned that a GoFundMe account has been created -- titled Let Them Play - New Mexico -- to generate $30,000 to pay for litigation against the state on behalf of APS athletes who want to return to sports. Developing ...
I’d guess 250-300 people here at Hoffmantown Church this morning for this rally in support of high school athletes. And to voice their displeasure with the Governor’s decision to shut the fall sports down. They’ve just begun their march. cars driving by honking their support.
Just got a call from NMAA executive director Sally Marquez.
She said NMAA will play out the rest of the state basketball tournament as planned, all the way through the boys 5A final on Saturday night.
Very glad to hear that.
BREAKING: Oregon Health Authority and Oregon Gov. Kate Brown have revised mask mandate rules for sports that compete outdoors.
Athletes competing in non-contact sports may remove mask for competition.
Common sense prevails.
I've really been missing Austin Denton this week. He and I used to do a lot of halftime shows together on ESPN Radio, 101.7 FM, and he's been on my mind often. 3 months Monday since he passed. He so loved being here for the state tournament.
Changing gears for a quick minute, I am hearing that there be mounting national media interest in a potential legal battle between APS athletes/coaches and the State of NM.
And it should draw that kind of attention; this is an extremely unusual scenario.
We sorta suspected this was coming, but now it's official ... Former Eldorado QB and Michigan TE Zach Gentry has signed an agent and is declaring himself eligible for this year's NFL draft.
APS on Monday told its high schools that it will be allowing the four varsity contact sports -- football, soccer, wrestling and basketball -- to get back to out-of-season workouts starting Oct. 5. That should be extremely welcome news for local athletes.
My story comes Tuesday.
BREAKING:
I got wind of this last night but couldn’t put it out there. Now I can:
Former Manzano LHP Mitchell Parker will be making his MLB debut on Monday night for the Washington Nationals.
At Dodger Stadium.
Awesome career bump for Mitchell, the hard-throwing lefty.
My heart is in a million pieces right now. I just can't believe this. I love you blake. Your smile and charisma could light up any room. Every single person who knew you will miss you dearly. I love you so much man. I'll see you again one day. Heaven got a great one.
And there it is.
June 15. New Mexico high school athletes and coaches can officially begin getting back into things (with plenty of restrictions and guidelines) two weeks from this coming Monday.
Passed 8-4.
Such great news.
A shoutout to the Highland High School baseball team.
The Hornets beat Portales today 9-0 in the second game of a doubleheader.
That put an end to the school’s 5-year, 65-game losing streak. Dates to April of 2018. Glad to see that streak end. Been a lot of hard days.
And there, boys and girls, is the word from the Albuquerque Public Schools board ...
They WILL allow local high schools to play golf, cross country and volleyball this fall.
Special night at Bulldog City as Pappa Dog, Jim Hulsman, comes home for a court re-naming ceremony at Albuquerque High. Awesome to see coach and that Kelly green blazer in this gym again.
A terrible day for the Rio Grande High baseball community, and the tight knit South Valley in general:
One of the Ravens varsity players, junior Isaac Venzor Prado, died early this morning at UNM Hospital.
He was 17 years old. I am writing his obituary for the AJ. Awful news.
Sixth place.
In a field with over 200 of the best cross country runners in the U.S., Gianna Rahmer just placed sixth at Nike Cross Nationals in Portland.
Just an amazing showing for the 8th grader from Hoover MS who dominated the state high school season representing Eldorado.
Anyone else out there wondering, like me, how state basketball closes down but schools -- where, of course, NO STUDENTS WHATSOEVER interact with one another in very large groups -- remain open?
That question is bugging the crap out of me.
End of an era, everyone. Frank Castillo just texted me. He is retiring after 42 years as a head boys basketball coach. The last 34 were spent at La Cueva and he was the only head coach the Bears have ever had. “I felt like it was time,” he said.
Thanks for all the well wishes! They are much appreciated. As a 2x cancer survivor, been fearing for 2 years that I’d test positive for C-19. But I’m vaxxed, so symptoms aren’t too debilitating. Going to try to scrounge up a story or 2 during quarantine and
make myself useful.😎
So Highland reached out to me this morning, and I woke up to a text that said:
After school began (Aug. 12), Highland gained an "unexpected" influx of new FB players. 29 new faces among frosh and sophs. More than doubling the school's current number.
THAT. IS. AWESOME.
Well the news is out ... David Howes is resigning as Rio Rancho’s Head football coach and he’ll be joining the staff of his brother-in-law, Danny Gonzales at UNM to coach linebackers.
Dave won two state titles with the Rams, 2014 and 2016 when RRHS was undefeated.
BREAKING:
Here is the first piece of good news NM has had in a while:
Vaccinated prep athletes will NOT have to wear their masks at any of the remaining prep events -- during competition.
Overdue, but at least it's something.
Can confirm the news that Cleveland High football coach Heath Ridenour is resigning and will join Danny Gonzales’ coaching staff at UNM.
So, state’s best high school football coaching job is now open.
My mom has been gone almost 19 years, but I always miss her a bunch on MD. She was 53 when she died ... my advice is to treasure your mom for as long as you can, boys and girls.
Because you never know.
FINAL
Class 5A Boys Championship
No. 2 Volcano Vista 66
No. 1 Las Cruces 55
Hawks win their first title since 2017, and become the first Albuquerque Public Schools boys team to finish a season undefeated. VV went 29-0.
On the whole, a game that produced lots of thrills.
That MWC officials' explanation for the intentionally missed FT in the Lobo game is the most bullshit explanation I think I have ever read. Pure, unadulterated idiocy from that crew.
Forgive the language. They didn't notice?!?! What else was there TO notice? Shameful.
By the way, if you plan on messaging me today and shaming athletes who have not yet been vaccinated, don't even think about it. I'm not having it. Any of it.
UNM baseball dominates NMSU this year. Beats the Aggies four times. And Lobos can do nothing but watch Ags hoot and hollar as they punch their NCAA ticket. Between this and basketball, Lobo Nation has a seriously unpleasant case of the red (Crimson) ass. As it should.
Xmas eve always such a uniquely bizarre and somber day for me. It was 20 years ago today that my mom passed, and all these years later, I'm still not quite sure how to approach Dec. 24. I am the same age (53) as she was when she died. Which is surreal. Still miss her a ton.
COACHING NEWS
Ray Rodriguez, Cibola’s longtime head boys basketball coach, is retiring, Journal has learned.
“It was time,” he said. He’s been a head coach for 35 years.
Sorry to see Ray step aside. He had a terrific career, took both Highland and Cibola to the state finals.
Left to right: David Lee of ABQ Academy, LeDarrius Cage of Valencia, Curtis Flakes of St. Pius and Christopher Smalls of Rio Grande.
Chancey Bush of the Journal shot them together here last Sunday.
Spoke to Atrisco Heritage QB Latavious Morris after this memorable game tonight. He threw (unofficially; I’m still tabulating) for 519 yards and seven touchdowns. And NEVER PLAYED QUARTERBACK IN HIS LIFE UNTIL TONIGHT.
I spoke with many very intelligent, well-spoken kids for this story. The prep athletes in this state have demonstrated consistent strength and fortitude throughout all of this. They cannot be commended enough.

Thinking of my mom. Today would have been her 75th birthday. Been almost 22 years since she passed and I think of her often.
Advice: Do something spontaneous for your mom. Take her to lunch. Buy her a rose. Give her a hug and tell her you love her. It'll mean the world to her.
Brandon Back, La Cueva’s head football coach, is LC’s new athletic director. He will replace the retiring LeeAnn Moores. Brandon tells me he will do both jobs going forward.
That was maybe the most improbable comeback I’ve seen in 30-plus years on this job.
Atrisco Heritage comes all the way back and pulls a stunner, 70-68 over No. 1 Cleveland.
This game was 36-8 Storm in the second quarter.
INSANE!
BREAKING:
And there it is.
Eldorado's Bella Hines has committed to LSU.
She just took her official visit to Baton Rouge before LSU's first NCAA Tournament game.
@steven_montoya
Are you all still running with masks? Come on New Mexico! This is bogus. Even Oregon changed their minds. We have run without maskers here in AZ all season and I have not had ONE sick athlete.
Look, boys and girls, until UNM and NMSU are allowed to return and practice regularly inside their own state, any chatter about prep sports returning is, on the whole, largely tilting at windmills. When Lobos and Ags come back, that will be a good sign.
BREAKING COACHING NEWS
Journal has learned that Lori Mabrey, who resigned from Cibola last May after 16 seasons and who led the Cougars to 5 state championship games, including the 6A title in 2015, is the new girls basketball coach at Rio Rancho High School.
Story coming...
Journal (ok, me) has been told by a reliable source that former Piedra Vista High and University of Arizona star pitcher Chase Silseth — drafted in the 11th round by the Angels last year — is being called up to make his Major League debut Friday night against Oakland.
I would describe this latest development as the first seriously good piece of news for high school athletics in New Mexico since we crowned state basketball champions back in March.
Whole lotta folks been waiting for this day.
BREAKING NEWS: Multiple sources have told ABQ Journal that longtime Valley High boys basketball coach Joe Coleman, who led the Vikings to three state championships, has retired.
Developing.
BREAKING COACHING NEWS
Cibola has its new head football coach. It is Chris Howe, who accepted the position earlier today. Formerly a head coach at Del Norte, and Chris also in recent years has been a DC at both Rio Rancho and, most recently, at Eldorado.
My obituary on Isaac Venzor Prado of Rio Grande.
I'll be following up with his family on Wednesday at Eldorado as the Ravens play the Eagles. The team has something special planned to honor their fallen teammate.
BREAKING
The ABQ Journal can report that Zack Cole, who had been the head boys basketball coach at Santa Fe High School, has been chosen as Cleveland’s new coach.
Jose Murillo finishes with 40 points and 20 rebounds, and closes out one of the great state tournaments any boy or girl has ever had in this state.
He scored 143 points and grabbed 73 rebounds in Highland's four postseason victories.
Now it's over.
No 3 Atrisco Heritage 53
No. 5 Cleveland 49
First basketball title for the Jags.
First championship in the school's history.
That's good stuff.
Boys and girls, I know a lot of you are asking me what data the state is using to support this decision.
And I chasing that. When I know, I shall pass it along.
But believe me, I'm with y'all. This is absurd.
Apparently, Highland's volleyball losing was 118 in a row before tonight, dating to Sept. 26 of 2013. That's almost hard to fathom, a losing streak that goes on that long.
You gotta be happy for those girls.
Del Norte coach Jeron McIntosh just got back to me.
The official number for his senior guard, Shane Douma-Sanchez, tonight, in the Knights' loss to Eldorado?
That would be 60 points. Which places him ninth on the all-time records list in NM. And No. 1 all-time from an ABQ kid.
BREAKING NEWS: The state of New Mexico .... will allow local schools ... to open their concession stands for high school sporting events!!!
(Is there a sarcasm emoji? Not sure.) But the concession stands opening is a real thing. Also, overnight travel now permitted, I am told.
I hope against hope that somebody -- ANYBODY -- in Santa Fe reads this and will expedite a policy change.
(This came from the AJ's editorial board, following my story Sunday).
It’s safe, and time, to let NM’s youth athletes unmask

This shoots up the list as one of my favorite stories of the calendar year:
Manzano football coach Phillip Martinez and his wife were together at 5:41 p.m. today when his wife gave birth to their daughter. Then Phillip rushed to Cleveland to coach his team. Amazing story.
BREAKING
OK, boys and girls, here's something to liven up your Sunday:
QB Aden Chavez is back at Cibola. Has left Florida, where he moved, and is back living in NM and practicing with the Cougars. I just confirmed this within the past 30 minutes.
An extraordinary development.
On a personal/professional note, I do have some other news that just became official last night ... starting Aug. 25, I will be a weekly co-host for 101.7 FM The Team's weekly high school sports show, along with Gary Herron of the Rio Rancho Observer. Pretty stoked.
