This is what XC practice looked like this morning in Los Alamos, NM. Long run just above 9k’ in elevation. 53 degrees when we started at 7 AM. 31 kids out running. 16 made it to the end of the trail, 9 being first timers!

Some track coaches never ask their athletes what events THEY want to do. Why not? When a kid wants to race one event over another and you allow them to it builds trust and buy in and that is very worth the investment and the small gesture.

I have a senior, who has made incredible improvements in distance running over his career, the last 2 years especially. When I asked him what he attributes to it he simply said “I got tired of being slow”. He made the conscious decision to improve. That’s a powerful moment.

Track may be a non cut sport at my school but that doesn’t mean all athletes deserve to be on my team. All an athlete gets is an opportunity. We have a standard for effort and attitude and behavior. The right kids are there, my job is to get the wrong kids OFF the bus.

Coaches shouldn’t be holding practice but schools shouldn’t close off any outdoor facilities like tracks, tennis courts, baseball fields, or outdoor basketball courts. There is nothing wrong with still being active. Students and community members need an active outlet.

In more smh news… NM athletes can spend the night in a hotel room. Typically that’s 4 to a room and I don’t think anybody sleeps with a mask on. Yet we still can’t compete in T&F without a mask on!? This is not about keeping kids “safe”. I actually don’t know what it is 🤷🏽‍♂️

HS PR’s for Dakotah Lindwurm (Bullen). When interviewed she said she walked on to her D2 school and now she’s going to represent Team USA in the marathon in Paris this summer. When interviewed she said she “kept showing up and believed in herself”. 🫡

The XC team is getting a "state send off" and we asked that the team & band be released 10 min early and all other students just a couple minutes in order to celebrate. I get an email from a teacher basically saying we should not be doing this as we are here for education first.

XC coaches, I do this at the start of each school year. It’s an email to all staff and provides a list of all XC boys to the teachers. It’s a great way to get teachers on board and supporting your athletes and team from the get go.

I can’t speak for all coaches but I will never over train a kid in my program yet I hear those 2 words from both athletes and parents at times. My response is “No, YOU are under recovering.” Come to terms with quality sleep, nutrition and hydration, kids and families!

So eating nachos in the stands is ok to do mask free but running a 3200 at 1PM at the end of June is not ok to do mask free. To the people in power, this is absurd and illogical. Do the right thing and get rid of the mask rule for athletes. They are not in classrooms!

I don’t understand why NM leaders are dying on the “wear your mask while competing” hill. Spring sports should not be required to wear masks at this point. All student athletes and coaches have access to the vaccine AND spring sports are absolutely not close contact! Why?

My youngest, was 25th in the middle school race at the Joe Vigil Invitational last year (7:17/mi for 3k). This year she was 4th in the varsity race (6:20/mi for 5k)!How did she do it? That’s the difference between dipping your toes in the water and jumping in.

We gave this freshman a varsity uniform just a few weeks ago. He started out on our JV team. He’s now qualified for the state championships in the 3200. Kid has run 10:50 ➡️ 10:30 ➡️ 10:05. He’ll shoot for the school freshman 1600 record (4:40) tomorrow.

As a head TF coach make sure you’re spending time teaching freshman, traveling on the 🚌 to JV meets, showing and chasing freshman records, and coaching outside of your specialty. Varsity is cool but get outside of that sometimes and meet your team!

She did it! From 6:01.48 ➡️ 5:41.21. A year ago, she ran the same race in 6:42.07. She stopped playing volleyball, started running XC and has been enjoying distance running and the friends she’s made ever since. Her mom and I get to coach her which is just a bonus for us.
