Joined by my wife, I was sworn into office today at the Minneapolis City Hall as the Ward 6 Council Member.
Residents in Ward-6 trusted me with their vote, and I take that very seriously. It’s time to get to work!
What’s missing on this picture??
DRIVERS!!!
Council remains steadfast that Minneapolis can be a city that provides safe and affordable services for riders and ensures minimum wage for drivers. Corporate pressure is not an acceptable reason to undermine basic workers rights.
Drivers are human beings with families, and they deserve dignified minimum wages like all other workers. Today’s vote showed Uber, Lyft, and the Mayor that the Minneapolis City Council will not allow the East African community, or any community, to be exploited for cheap labor.
I’m sick. The video is horrifying. They shot him in his sleep. I don’t know where to start or end. Failing another young black man in Minneapolis. I call for the justice system to move as quickly and as surely as possible to hold the officer involved accountable.
I want to raise my voice and join the other elected officials who have called for the resignation of Hennepin County Sheriff David Hutchinson. Sheriff Hutchinson wrecked a government vehicle, under the influence, with an open container of alcohol in the vehicle,
I stand with my colleagues and everyone in Minneapolis with shock and immense sadness at the loss of another life to being shot by a Minneapolis Police Officer. I join so many in our community calling for urgent transparency from the BCA and all other investigating agencies.
So humbled by the trust and support of my amazing Neighbors! I’ve so much more to say (to so, so many!) but for tonight I’ll just say — “Thank You Ward 6”! -J
Mayor Jacob Frey continue to be the PR of corporate greedy companies, like Uber/Lyft. He vetoed not one but twice an ordinance that will grantees mostly poor, immigrant DRIVERS for minimum wage equivalents, just like every other worker in Minneapolis.
Today the council passed a resolution commemorating Ramadan. It was an honor to help carry it, and help share my faith with the city.
One of the notable things with this resolution was we acknowledged that the call to prayer was legal in Minneapolis. The Adhan is one of the

most important parts of our faith, and the ability to do it during the day has been in the city’s code all along.
Mosques around the city can play the call to prayer during the hours of 7am to 10pm. These hours are set by the state as time when noise can be broadcast outside.
I am extremely disappointed with Governor’s veto to give rideshare drivers minimum pay rates and protections. It’s time for Minneapolis City Council to stand up for drivers!
It's time for the Minneapolis City Council to step up.

Earlier today, fellow council members and I collectively reached out to the Mayor in response to the eviction notice concerning Camp Nenookaasi. Our letter outlines three specific requests addressed to Mayor Jacob Frey:
Last night this perpetrator pictured here intended burning down the 24th Mall Mosque (Masjid Omar Islamic Center). He walked inside the mosque with a gas can and started a fire inside the bathroom. Lucky people in there put out the fire. This could have resulted in serious injury
Devastated by the increased gun violence and mass shootings in South Minneapolis.
7 people were shot at Chicago/Franklin. I have been speaking with Inspector Gomez. He let me know that no one died. I will be sure to keep community members updated.
With the canvassing board making it official today, I’m excited to step in to the role representing the 6th ward and get to work on the important issues facing our city.
What a Special ‘Treat’! THANK YOU🙌🏾

Today, the Fair Drives Safe Rides ordinance passed in Council. I proudly stand in support of the Fair Drives Safe Rides ordinance. Just as any other employee in Minneapolis deserves protection, drivers should also be afforded the same rights and protection. The corporate pressure
I’m so proud of the East African community who has been organizing for over two years to make this happen. Their resilience, even after hard losses at the City and state capital last year, is how workers won today.

Everyone knows I am a strong rent stabilization supporter - that's who I promised my voters in Ward 6 I would be.
I’m also a Muslim - celebrating the important holiday of Eid al-Adha today.

Today, I sat with the parents of Dolal Bayle and watched the MPD body camera footage that showed the death of their son. I remain with the family now as they try to grieve and seek answers to why this happened. My heart goes out to all of Dolal's family and friends.
We demand and can accept nothing less.
As this continues we will learn more about no-knock warrants, if and how the officers announced themselves, and the allegations involved. I urge MPD, the St. Paul Police Department, and the Minnesota BCA to make as much information

Housing is a human right, something I know from being a refugee. We must support the renters who live here now, and we must build more housing for the people who will need it in the future. Rent stabilization is a powerful tool let’s use it.
At tomorrow’s City Council meeting, I am bringing a Motion with
