board member, still fighting for a better Providence. Views are my own ๐ณ๏ธโ๐๐ณ๏ธโโง๏ธ๐ต๐ธ
No matter the result, I can say that I put everything I had into my race. I do not regret a moment of the campaign. No result will stop me from fighting for the people of Providence.
My heart goes out to those impacted by the shooting in Providence tonight, the largest in the cities history. Unfortunately, I fear the discourse is going to focus on group membership and not the systems that create poverty and violence.
I have filed my official Declaration of Candidacy! I don't think I've ever been so happy to file paperwork. Providence deserves leaders who will prioritize everyday people over lobbyists and corporations. I'm excited to fight for housing, and better infrastructure, and education.
A ward 5 constituent called me the other day to tell me that my opponent told him not to vote for me because I am "a homosexual". He wrote about his experience in Spanish, and here is a translation that he said I can share (I will provide a screenshot of the original at the end):
Last night was surreal. After spending most of my life closeted, it was empowering to march through the streets of Providence calling for queer liberation. I am proud of who I am and all that I've done to get here.
I love a cool morning on earth. I love waking up to messages to love and support. I love waking up and remembering that there is more to life than elections and that I am more than a political candidate.
My
#PrideMonth
has looked really different this year. I got top surgery 10 days ago, and so instead of going to celebrations and rallies, I've been resting. Having a body that finally feels like mine is the best kind of
#Pride
celebration I can think of.
POV: you're a dean of a school of public health in a state where almost no ARPA funds have been spent and minimal public health precautions are in place and you are minimizing a true health crisis:
Thank you to everyone who believed in me and supported me. As a queer and trans candidate, I knew it would be an uphill battle and we came really damn close.
Thank you to
@samsanders
who used his penultimate episode of
@NPRItsBeenAMin
to talk about the difference between anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism, the rise of anti-Jewish hatred and how all of the fights against White Supremacy go together.
I've cried so much this week. I've cried for the trans kids being attacked by legislators across the country. I've cried seeing Nazis attack people and places I my community. I've cried as another war is on it's way. Imagine being indifferent to all this violence.
Listening to this testimony while sitting on room full of LGBTQ and people color. The sponsor has said some of the most racist and homo/transphobic stuff I have ever heard. The only thing giving me solace are how many people here oppose it.
#NOW
Protestors moved inside, essentially taking over the hearing. Rep David Morales and others are arguing with the commission. Additional Warwick Police Officers have come inside as the commission warns of removal from hearing is further disrupted
@wpri12
Anti-trans MAGA activists invading Edgewood to spew hateful, harmful rhetoric. How did Cranston let this happen? How does a library with rules against hate speech provide the space & legitimacy? We are showing up to support trans kids. Join us.
Getting rid of paper bus passes is pretty bad for low income
@RIPTA_RI
riders. People without consistent access to smartphones, bank accounts, etc are penalized. Better than forcing people to use the WAVE app would be to make public transit totally free.
Today I blocked a person on Twitter. I will not stand for transphobia and attacks of my gender identity. I know that running for office as a non-binary person is going to be easy, but it underscores the need for diverse representation.
Just so everyone knows. The hill that I will die on is making political involvement accessible to people. This means full time legislatures where people are paid a full wage. What we have now is garbage and makes it hard to get working class people in government.
I get frustrated when people tell me that I'm too young to run for office. It shouldn't take a lifetime to decide to do something about the failures of the status quo. I will continue to see my age is an asset.
Outing kids to their parents is actively harmful and dangerous. This isn't about parental control, it's about criminalizing and legislating queerness away. I hope all the "allies" are ready to step up and fight for the LGBTQ+ community:
PSA: like most other health crises, childhood obesity isn't about personal choice. It's about economic and racial disparities, rising costs of food (especially fresh food), and parents doing whatever they can do get food on the table.
Listening to a Providence finance committee meeting now. There are estimates that there will be 15,000 evictions in 2022. There are 500+ people who are unhoused and unsheltered. We need eviction moratoria, we need rent/utility relief. We need to build housing.
1. There are not enough shelter beds rn. 2. Shelters are not always safe. 3. Shelters do not have space for couples or women in general. 4. Shelters do not allow for people who work 2nd or 3rd shift. 5. Shelters/hotels might be too far from work or services. I could go on.
.
@GovDanMcKee
asked about the stateโs legal position on State House encampment: โThe people who are supporting the courtย action are trying to keepย those people, the people who are homeless, homeless.โ
PSA if you're out doing community cleanups: put needles in a hard plastic container, and then drop them off with one of our lovely neighborhood harm reduction organizations. If you're in Providence,
@AIDSCAREOS
and
@WeberRenew
are great options.
This report is pretty technical, but it shows that Rhode Island has passed up almost $200 million a year from 2014-2020 on federal funding for affordable housing. The housing crisis that we are in was fully avoidable.
Today, a man held 4 Jews hostage inside their synagogue. Many will respond to this attack with call for more surveillance. An increasingly militarized state does not keep people safe. We need religious (and non religious) communities to live and work in solidarity.
I take the bus to work and on the route is a gas station. I like to look at the prices when we pass by. Gas prices went up $0.20 last night. Creating comprehensive and accessible public transportation is an economic justice issue.
My parents told me that they are ashamed of me for organizing for ceasefire and for Palestine. It is impossible to pretend I'm not shattered about it. Yes, there are things much more important than my family relationships - like a genocide - but this sucks
New: Just spoke with RIPTA union President Nick DeCristofaro, who says the union is looking for ~3% annual raises. At the $16.45/hour starting salary for paratransit operators (the entry-level spot for drivers), he's not convinced workers would want that job. More from our talk:
Cutting down bus frequency is a direct attack on low income and working people. Instead of dolling out money to developers, or giving large tax breaks to the wealthy and to corporations, maybe we could fund public transit.
Just in: RIPTA says it's cutting back service on more than 20 routes starting Oct. 22 because of "historic workforce shortage," citing challenges recruiting new hires.
Right now, in RI, the the rate of COVID cases is over 1,000 per 100k. The fact that the General Assembly is meeting in person, schools are opening and people are going about business as normal is reclus especially given that our health system is crumbling:
I have always loved the timing of the Jewish new year. Fall feels like the right time to regroup, take stock and figure out the person you want to be in the next year.
Shana tova u'metukah - have a happy and sweet new year.
The City of Providence's proposed budget has $88 million for police and no significant finding stream for housing. People are being harrased for coming together and creating their own safe options. And the city is giving tax breaks to luxury developers. This makes no sense to me.
It was amazing to see so many people come out to oppose H 7539 (the combination anti-CRT bill,
#DontSayGay
and
#DontSayTrans
bill). I was honored to stand among long time activists, students, parents and teachers and share my story.
RHODE ISLAND POLITICS TWITTER WE NEED YOU. A whole bunch of hearings were scheduled for this week. We need people to submit testimony (written and oral). Read this thread to see how you can get involved.
Tomorrow is
#TransDayOfVisibility
. You may ask why we need to have a day set aside for this. So let me tell you a little bit about me and why I am so proud to be part of the trans community and run for office as a trans candidate:
It's
#NonBinaryAwarenessWeek
! There is no one way to be non-binary. Gender fluidity is beautiful and valid. Proud to be non-binary today and everyday.
Rents have risen around 24% in the past year alone in Providence. Time to end special tax breaks for luxury developers and wealthy non profits. Time to pass rent control. Time to build low-income and affordable housing:
Today is a good day to remember that the War on Drugs is racist and has caused irreparable harm to communities of color. It is time to legalize cannabis, and expunge records.
I am really excited to part of the
@hausofcodec
board. My first job in public health was doing HIV and hep C testing and outreach in shelters, including youth shelters. Now, as a trans adult, I am excited to bring my knowledge and experience to HOC.
Welcome to the Haus of Codec Board of Directors, Jackie Goldman (They, Them) (
@jackiegoldmanri
) โ We are excited to have you!
Jackie Goldman (they/them) is a public health researcher and local community organizer.
.
@GovDanMcKee
knew that cases were going up and still ramped down COVID protections. This negligence is killing people. He is not fit to be governor and should be held accountable for the sickness and death he caused:
I'm in public health, I am Jewish, and I call for a free Palestine and the end of Israel's apartheid state. The United States is complicit in the colonization and mass murder of Palestinians, and we need governments at every level to end their support of these atrocities.
don't know if anyone has started this in public health/
#epitwitter
. in any case QT and pass on:
I'm in public health and I call for a free Palestine and an end to the Israeli state's apartheid. This is integral to both my moral world view and my scholarship. Pass it on.
Coming out as non-binary had been both incredibly liberating and one of the hardest things I've ever done. What makes it hard is being constantly misgendered. Please pay attention to the names and pronouns people use. You have no idea how much it hurts.
Today is
#HolocaustRemembranceDay
. With the rising tide of Nazism around the world, we need to do more than remember. We need to actively fight back against anti-Semitism and white supremacy.
#NeverAgainIsNow
I am Jewish, I am proud to be Jewish. I also do not support zionism and the violence committed against Palestine (both now and over the past 75+ years). Jewish values teach us to value justice and the sacredness of life and that is not what the Israeli government has stood for.
It would be cool if even one major media outlet listened to the countless anti-zionist jews explaining that being opposed to the zionist project doesn't equate to antisemitism, instead of endlessly repeating the lie that opposition to Israel means someone hates Jews.
City Council President John Igliozzi is not a fan of the city's new vaccine mandate, which could cause dozens of police officers to be fired
"The city will be completely lawless."
We covered a LOT of ground in this newsy first Pulse of Prov of 2022:
The average person in Providence is making around 40k. We are literally looting our city to price out the people living in it.
@pvdcitycouncil
make it make sense
Respectfully, I don't really care what you have to say. In Judaism, we believe that people should have dignity in their lives and relationships and permit gay marriage. Your religion isn't the only one.
Are we going to get vaccine clinics at Providence schools? students in East Greenwich and Barrington of much higher vaccination rates. These communities are far wealthier and far better resourced. If you're going to remove all public health precautions, at least provide vaccines.
Tomorrow, House Education will be hearing H7539, the bill that bans the teaching of racism along with a
#DontDayGay
bill. If you can, come to the statehouse at 3:30, bring your pride flags and voices. We need to protect our queer, trans and youth of color!
I just passed this law! Somerville becomes the first municipality in the Commonwealth to pass new
#PrideMonth
protections for gender-affirming and reproductive healthcare. Thank you to the
@ACLU_Mass
@TransResistance
and all those who helped me with this. ๐๐ณ๏ธโโง๏ธ
#mapoli
I was so nervous, but I am so thankful for the opportunity to speak out against the Narragansett improvement company. We do not need their pollution and their illegal land use.
We need housing, and healthcare. Y'all will talk about marriage equality all day, but what are you doing to address the fact that LGBTQ+ people are more likely to be unhoused, unemployed and unable to get healthcare. Queer liberation, not rainbow electoralism.
I am proud to sign a proclamation recognizing June as
#Pride
Month here in Rhode Island.
Letโs celebrate the tremendous progress weโve made towards equality for the LGBTQ+ community, but we know there is more work yet to do.
COVID rates in Providence County are"high" according to the CDC. This means that people should wear high quality masks indoors. Please take care of yourself and the members of your community.
Hey,
@pvdcitycouncil
, why are we spending $61k on ammunitions for the police, but only $25k on supplies to deal with the pandemic? Your priorities are completely backwards:
@jfeldman_epi
I get frustrated with public health professionals who see the status quo and have NO ISSUES WITH IT. They fail to recognize how institutions, types of research that get funded, and credentialism perpetuate inequality at every level. Most of academia is not for me
Today I learned that HIPAA does not protect you from disclosure from law enforcement. With trans healthcare and abortion bans looming this scares me to my core and I feel like I should have known this sooner.
Biked with other members of the
@pph_collective
to a meeting down the Broad Street bike trail. Thank you to
@PVDStreets
and
@_holyspokes
for all the advocacy and hard work keeping the people of Providence safe.
This is the right move. I can only hope that
@RIPTA_RI
keeps the mask mandate for a while longer especially because many of the riders are either less likely to be vaccinated or are more medically vulnerable (kids, older folks, unhoused/unstably housed folks, etc).
My sone is gay. Sexuality is private and nothing has stopped him from becoming a psychiatrist for children with special needs and their parents.
If a candidate is capable of denigrating or disparaging a person at this level, they cannot serve us.
There is a serious question as to whether we should give Morgan's bill air time when there is no way it can pass. On one hand, it gives foder to alt-right, white supremacist thinking. On the other, we need to show communities that we will stick up for them no matter what.
Might not seem like a lot, but RI went from .5% to a 1% positivity rate for COVID over the past week. That is a doubling. Numbers are small, but this will grow. We cannot keep pretending that the pandemic is over.
I work at the School of Public Health and I can see that this bike lane is already improving bike and pedestrian safety immensely.
@Jorge_Elorza
do not cave to RIDOT. This is a great and necessary project.
Update: As of this morning, it appears South Water St. project is nearly finished. Seems thereโs not much left to be done except for a bit of concrete pouring, and there are grates for storm drains stacked alongside street. Photo snapped around 7:10am. No work being done.
Happy Passover! This is a holiday that celebrates freedom from tyranny. It's a good reminder that we need to keep fighting until ALL people are free from oppression.
Really ashamed that Brown keeps arresting peaceful protesters who want to stop genocide. I feel this as an alumn and a current employee. Brown should not infliting state violence on students who want peace.
JUST-IN: The 41 students sitting in at University Hall were arrested by Providence Police, says the Brown Divest Coalition. That marks more than 60 arrests of pro-Palestinian protesters on campus this year.
Yo, the Harm Reduction Center bill just passed in committee in the Senate. This is just the first step, but I am SO HYPED!! Thank you Sen. Miller for sponsoring it and the entire harm reduction community for organizing around it!
