We were robbed of a story featuring Bunnie and Blaze...
We were robbed of a Sonic Universe 4-parter arc centered on the Freedom Fighters for that matter. Yeah cancel the comic right when an arc centered on the comic's most iconic characters is in the works๐คฆ๐
"I didn't appreciate any of it, Tails. I want my kids back! I want my life back! Oh, sweet Maria have mercy..."
This is a really powerful moment if you read Ken's Mobius 25 Years Later and see how grumpy and ungrateful Sonic was of what he had, esp. the "being king" part.
@Yungsnaku_
Not that the first one was bad, it was good but this one was a big step up. I will never understand critics' hatred of Sonic's friends. Sonic's friends are awesome. I mean c'mon this is TAILS and KNUCKLES we're talking about here...
Legit one of the most important storylines in the Archie Sonic comics was both written and drawn by someone who wasn't a mainstay writer for Sonic in the slightest, Tania del Rio. What else did she do for Sonic, a Blaze story? And she drew a story with Amy and Julie-Su training.
It's still funny to me how this Archie character still throws some fans for a loop.
It's Amy's evil twin who looks like a more grown version of her classic design, shares her classic design's nickname, and her characterization is a referential PARODY of what people THINK Amy is.
Can we have an F for the Archie Sonic Reboot? Preboot's my favorite, but Ian Flynn, Aleah Baker, Evan Stanley, etc. put a lot of work into building a new Archieverse with loads of new characters, and it all got axed in several years.

IDW Sonic is soon introducing two new villain characters. It's happening, these comics are gradually taking more notes from Archie, separating themselves more from the games as time goes on. How it should be. It'd be BORING otherwise...
Archie Sonic Spotlight: Eggman Empire (175-177)
Heroes can't win every day... but Sonic's not one to let a loss get to him!

Thinking about how Pontac and Graff teased the idea of Tails being controlled by the villain in some way and it never went anywhere...
Like, no boss fight. Part of me wonders if Pontaff wanted one... and Sega / Sonic Team just didn't want to program one?
Imagine a timeline where the game on the left did not get rushed out SEGA's door unfinished, and that never happened to a Sonic game again, and the thing on the right never happened to the comics...
#SonicTheHedgehog
More I think about it... objectively speaking, the Archie reboot may be Ian Flynn's best work on Sonic.
It wasn't too grimdark with tons of characters dying or being crippled (I guess Bunnie's backstory is kinda darker) or being being turned into zombie robot things. The
"HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO RAY?!"
OK, Archie Mighty is badass OK? Archie is based and deserves utmost respect for keeping Mighty, Ray, the Hooligans, etc. relevant for so long when SEGA was otherwise ignoring them.

OK, some of the alleged instances of traced artwork I've seen before don't really feel like actual direct tracing, but rather artists using a pre-existing drawing/pose as a reference. THIS on the other hand, yeah, Todd Wahnish traced character work from Sonic X WHOLESALE๐คฆ

Shard's design in Archie Sonic is a homage to Metal Sonic 3.0 build by Eggman Nega in Sonic Rivals 2.
Eggman Nega couldn't be used in Archie so Flynn found another way to implement the character while doing something special, and made a "What if Metal Sonic turned good?"
GameFan Volume 7 Issue 6 from June 1999 had a cover story previewing Sonic Adventure, the then upcoming in 3 months Dreamcast hit! This issue of the magazine featured an SA1 themed cover drawn by legendary Archie Sonic comic artist Patrick Spaziante!
I remember this ReadComicOnline commenter who would never shut up about "Ian Flynn's Anti-Archie Agenda" claimed that Sonic's parents not appearing all the time in Flynn's run meant "Flynn hated them"
But fun fact: THIS is technically the first page Flynn ever wrote for Archie:
Fun fact: This actually wouldn't have been allowed in Archie. Yeah Sega didn't want Metal Overlord in Archie for... some reason.
So like IDW is less restricted than Archie in some ways and more restricted than Archie in others...
Ooh, Amy stans may not like this one but hey it was a commission. Gorgeous!
The style here feels like a mix between his pre-Flynn and Flynn era styles personally... love it tho

Art by Jay Axer. Dude went on to be one of the best artists on the official Sonic comics published by Archie, and much later after that, a Hearthstone artist. Both my favorite franchises, Sonic and Warcraft, got this guy's golden touch. I love it.
The Archie Sonic comics ran from November 1992 with Miniseries

to January 2017 with Sonic Universe

. A 24 year + 2 month run. (20.5 years of Preboot)
That's nothing to sneeze at, not at all. Longest running based on a licensed IP, longest running comic based on a video game
The original version of Sonic Select Book 7's cover. Originally the cover was supposed to have Geoffrey St. John on it. Which makes more sense when you consider all but one of the stories in this book had Geoffrey in it. His spot on the cover was taken by Espio because lawsuit.
"Going back to Adventure style would just be nostalgia pandering"
It would be if SEGA wanted it to be. But it doesn't HAVE to be. Sonic Adventure 2 wasn't a rehash of SA1 for instance. It was it's own game with it's own identity despite sharing a similar game design formula.
Since a new Sonic Movie poster is paying homage to Batman, imma remind yall of this, from Archie Sonic the Hedgehog issue 38. I always liked this piece. :)
@strangepacks_
These are the ABSOLUTE WORST parts of it and you forgot them (that other shit still sucks though, even the shorts, just give me a proper video player dammit! Can't seek, can't fullscreen, WTF YouTube, stop trying to copy Tik Tok verbatim)
This is such a wonderfully made Archie Sonic comic encyclopedia. It really did catalogue everything you'd want to know about the comic's ginormous world and it's immense cavalcade of characters. Lots of nice artwork was used inside of it too!

The debut of Mina's boyfriend Ash Mongoose in issue 134! He's quite insecure about Sonic being back from space due to Mina's previous romantic feelings for him. This character was designed by Jon Gray, and I LOVE his design. Getting them emo 2000s vibes there... :)
Mecha Sally is kinda one of those things I enjoy but get why people don't like it. I like how it's basically Sonic's nightmare come true. Like the episode of SatAM where he dreamed that Sally was roboticized. Ian Flynn even quoted that episode here. (1)
From Issue234

I kinda like the legionized Bunnie design Tracy Yardley came up with. The one she would've gotten if the reboot never happened. Those limbs.
Only things missing are the cheek fuzz and the jacket really, which Archie Sonic Online thankfully added back.

Seniority =/= Superiority
However, I feel it's a good idea for an IP and/or its fandom to show appreciation for its earlier years in some way, even if we're talking content made for certain regional audiences.
Fans of Sonic SatAM / Archie / the Freedom Fighters understand this.
@Zerkanators
@jams3d
You-know-who did not have any involvement in that issue of Archie Sonic whose cover is seemingly being referenced here. Actually his level of involvement in those comics was substantial, but still far less than you think
Literally cannot for the life of me understand the ruthless, unbridled vitriol some people have for the Freedom Fighters. Make their designs more SegaSonic-like, they still wanna rip em apart. Decanonize Sonally, nope, still hate em.
I don't like / talk about IDW that much but the new issue, Kit was so pitifully sad here when he thought his friend Surge was dead. Do you want to hug the lil fennec boi?
The Metal Series: The other Metals based on characters that aren't Sonic. These are cool. Shame we don't see many of them much anymore (Aside from Metal Knux and Tails Doll being in IDW but Classic-only. Archie Tails Doll best tho)

Y'know, the recent developments involving Shade and the Nocturnus Clan, with them appearing in the Encyclo-speed-ia, and Ian Flynn outright saying on a Bumblekast that SEGA owns 'em, gave me a small glimmer of hope we'll see them again in an official Sonic media.
#Sonic
Let's take a moment to appreciate the little details that would change to Sally Acorn's pre-SGW design as the run progressed further into the modern era.
The SatAM look fit the art style of the time. The American Sonic artstyle employed by the cartoons and early comics.
I wish behind the scenes info on Archie Sonic was better kept track of and easily accessible to the average fan who doesn't feel like digging in legal jargon and such
Then again a ton of people became misinformed about the comics themselves thru bad YouTube videos + Twitter memes
Y'know, when Archie Sonic rebooted, some Pre-SGW characters did stick around, albeit Ian Flynn ones that didn't break Sega rules like being relatives to game characters like Tilly was to Mighty.
One pre-Flynn character survived albeit redesigned however, Nicole's Holo-Lynx form.
Except "Pendered" implies HE owns Sally. Which is impossible. And he has said plenty times before that none of the SatAM cast are his. I'd think that would be common knowledge. But some fans I guess don't do their research. Nothing against this artist, I actually love this art!
