official Eurovision account liking a tweet calling my jewish ass antisemetic was not on my bingo card but here we are
@Eurovision
you should actually be ashamed of yourself
The hysteria around Barry’s nude scene in Saltburn is a testament to the infantilisation of cinema in the last decade. It’s a remarkably tame bit of nudity, but it’s no wonder we’re seeing less nudity from actors when people insist on decontextualising it in this manner.
This is frankly disgusting. Andrew Scott is there to support his multiple nominated film and THIS is what you ask? Then when he looks visibly uncomfortable the guy carried on. Truly horrid.

If you’re an agent and your client tells you they think they’re not booking because they’re not ‘diverse’ enough, it is your responsibility to disabuse them of this idea as quickly as possible, not to further contribute to this kind of bigoted myth making.
I’m sad that another one of my super talented actors has taken the extremely tough decision to stop acting. Yes RETIRE from his career aged just 35 saying “I don’t feel diverse enough for this industry”
We miss the days actors were seen for their talents, not their appearance
The starkest realisation I’ve had after years of trying to make a career in development sustainable is that the roles were never designed to sustain a person - they were hobby jobs for the independently wealthy. Only those people can afford to curate their body of work.
I’ve struggled to express my experience of this over the last 15 years into a single tweet, so instead I’ll just tell you about the time a producer on a show said “the problem with having all these working class characters in this show is their houses are too small to film in”.
New research exclusively seen by Channel 4 News shows just 1 in 12 creatives working in TV and Film in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are from working class backgrounds.
Actor Samira Ahmed says her experience of drama school made her realise "you need connections".

Why can’t people act like normal fucking grown ups? Why can’t people consume a piece of media in which a person has performed nude without insisting on making it the sole topic of conversation for months on end?

And that he was such a warped perception of his earnings vs the income of what he considers ‘elite’ professions, with no idea of recent debates (i.e. starting salary for junior doctors being about £26k).
SPENCER is a pure gothic masterpiece which casts the Royal Family as a malignant House of Usher holding court over a crumbling world that exists only to perpetuate their power. 10/10

How wonderful to see so much well-deserved praise for
@HildaFay18
's performance in this week's episode of The Woman in the Wall. She's brought Amy to life with care and righteous anger.
#TheWomanInTheWall
A thought re the producer ✨discourse✨ - making shorts has always been, essentially, unpaid labour on the promise of future reward. That’s not new. The big change I’m seeing with the current round of BFI NETWORK funding is that people no longer feel it’s a risk worth taking. 🧵
About three times a week I'll read the most hideously transphobic tweet or article, visit the profile of its author, and see that they're followed by commissioners, execs and heads of diversity in film and tv. It's truly wild how rampant transphobia is at decision making level.

I have to wonder how much value there is in new labs when we do not have an infrastructure in place to move projects into production. There’s a generation of filmmakers waiting years to be allowed to make a first feature - what can new labs do but send people to join that queue?
We're awarding up to £150,000 to UK screen organisations & production companies seeking to create and run development labs for feature or immersive projects!

The idea that transness was created by Jews to destabilise society was what the literal, actual nazi party believed. Transphobia and antisemitism are inextricably linked. Public figures are being allowed to parrot nazi talking points because of indifference to their transphobia.
Not a day after
@Martina
had to delete & apologise for promoting a "Zoomer Ayran", she is defending Jennifer Bilek, who says that rich Jews promote "manufactured transgenderism." (As reported by ADL.)
And yet,
@BBCSport
staff can't attend Pride because it's too politicial??
It’s wild to hear Juliana Margulies say it so overtly, but she represents so many liberal straight people who weaponise their tolerance of our queerness to demand our silence and compliance. So many of us have experienced a thousand women like her.
listen to julianna margulies go on an absolutely unhinged rant against black people for supporting palestine, claiming muslims would play soccer ball with the decapitated heads of black queer people if they could, and saying she knows better as someone who played a lesbian on tv.
Finally watched Baby Reindeer. The number of seemingly wilful misinterpretations of it that I’ve seen online in the last couple of weeks is insane. I’m amazed that such astonishingly honest and self-aware writing has produced so many terrible, reckless hot takes.

It never ceased to amaze me how little the British government/establishment know about not only Irish but their own political history. The first female MP elected to Parliament was Constance Markievicz, a full year before Nancy Astor, as a Sinn Féin representative.
100 years ago today, the first female MP, Nancy Astor, was elected to Parlt. The female

candidates standing in this election are exceptional & I look forward to working with them in Parlt to achieve further progress on gender equality across our society.
I'm sad and worried for everyone working in exhibition, but particularly for young people working in cinemas because it's the closest proximity they can get to the industry they love. There's a direct thread from working

ALL OF US STRANGERS exposes the cosmic loneliness of the queer experience that we have tried to quell with the myth of progress. It’s the truest and most devastating film I have ever seen.

Commissioners love to ask "Why now?" "Why do we need this script now?" Like I don't know pal, why do we need a 5th series of Mrs Browns Boys? Why is now a good time for another series following a well known comedian going on holibobs with his mum? I'm going to screeaaaammm
2023 has been absolutely brutal, but celebrating some wins: The Woman in the Wall (BBC/Showtime), 4 episodes of Silent Witness (BBC), a show for Paramount+ that shoots in the new year, plus projects in dev with some incredible writers that I can’t wait to see grow in 2024! ✨

🚨 BREAKING: Health Secretary Wes Streeting has said he intends to ban puberty blockers for trans children.

Good morning folks - times are tough at the mo and I’m still on the lookout for script editor roles on tv and feature film projects! I have a background in talent development supporting emerging writers, and have worked with BAFTA-winning and -nominated writers and directors. 🧵
There’s something so fucked about getting into this industry to make work you’re passionate about - like the shows that made you care about tv in the first place - only to be blocked by algorithms that can supposedly predict successes despite pushing flop after flop on audiences.
BFI Flare is run by an amazing team of LGBTIQ+ people and the best allies you'll ever meet. Their hard work every year is an act of love for the community, and they go above and beyond to create an incredible platform for queer storytelling. Send them love today ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤
Stumbled across this piece I wrote for
@bfinetwork
a couple of years ago about writing working class stories. With careers in film becoming increasingly unsustainable for those of us who aren't independently wealthy, I think it's worth another read!
I’ve spent much more than my fair share of time in hospital wards. This policy serves no purpose other than capitulating to rising transphobia in the hopes of retaining power in the next GE, but it will endanger vulnerable trans people and prevent many from seeking medical care.
I avoided watching Big Boys for ages because I was so scared of how it might make me feel, and when I finally did it healed and changed me in ways I didn’t know a tv show could. I’m so delighted for
@jackrooke
getting the recognition he deserves!
I also want to add that despite all of these successes I spent a lot of 2022 worried about money and seriously considered leaving the industry on several occasions. Meaningful change needs to occur to make careers in all areas of the industry sustainable for everyone.
Not usually one for tooting my own horn, but in 2022 I have developed two seasons of television, three pilot scripts, seven feature films and four shorts, and worked with a whole load of talented writers. That feels pretty toot-worthy to me! Bring on 2023 ✨
This is such sad news for emerging filmmakers. The short film landscape in the UK has been totally eroded over the last few years. In the 15 years I’ve been working in shorts, success has never been harder, or more the purview of an elite few.

Hi, I’m a film and tv script editor and all-round story/development brain, looking for my next project to get my teeth stuck into. Here’s a little bit about me 🧵
I've been thinking a lot about the lack of development opportunities for and showcasing of emerging script editors working in the UK - particularly those who are freelance. So I'd like to compile a list! Please send recommendations my way.
The problem with the current prequels trend is that most films are successful when we meet the characters at precisely the most dramatically interesting and formative moment in their lives. The most a prequel can do is deliver them to this moment.
I'd like to talk a little about writing and prepping sex/nude scenes. First, as a preface: there's nothing wrong with wanting sex or nudity in your work, or wanting it to be explicit, or sexy. But it's wrong to not take producing those scenes seriously. [1/19]
I will always stand in solidarity and coalition with trans people and immigrants. The government is conjuring spectres from the most marginalised communities to fuel its rapid descent into fascism. If you’re not utterly horrified by it, I urge you to ask yourself why.

Angela Rayner watching on in silence as a police officer drags a Palestinian man - whose family have been killed in Gaza - from the room is precisely why I’ll never vote Labour again.
"I LOST MY FAMILY IN GAZA!" A Palestinian who lost his mother, brother & nieces to Israel's bombing in Gaza confronts Angela Raynor & the Labour Party at a Stockport fundraiser.
How can the Labour Party & any party not call for a ceasefire when Israel's genocide has killed 25000
The Lighthouse is Man of Aran x Dr Caligari x Rime of the Ancient Mariner. All brine and mud and piss. My highlight of

so far, and possibly my film of the year.
This is the end result of the fetishistic approach to lived experience. I know so many filmmakers of colour, and queer and trans filmmakers, who have had their identity scrutinised, interrogated, picked apart and denied in the quest for funding and throughout development.
All I can say is that ethnic minority filmmakers appear to be asked more invasive questions about their personal lives and whether that person is deserving of patronage through a white gaze. Those who've been in the room will know what I'm talking about.
I’ve never seen a standing ovation
@BFIFlare
like the one Kristen Lovell and Zackary Drucker received last night for their film, THE STROLL. If you have a chance to see it, go!
If you're anything other than absolutely appalled at the treatment of trans people in the UK and around the world, we're fundamentally incompatible as people. Happy Easter! 🐰

As we reach the end of Pride Month I’ve been thinking a lot about the people who declare themselves allies because they know and like white gays like me, but demonstrate no solidarity for the rest of the LGBTQIA+ community.
This is so terribly depressing. I feel for all of these filmmakers, including some lovely pals, who absolutely deserve the opportunity to make their films.
Exclusive:
None of the six projects Netflix selected through its Breakout scheme with Creative UK will now be greenlit for production.
Netflix will give £100,000 development awards to three of the six films.
Details:
Not to add to ✨the discourse✨, but the more I see this doing the rounds, the more I think that my issue with it is that while both are examples of valid writing styles, neither is an example of actually good writing.
I can’t believe it’s the year of our Lord 2023 and people are still going on stage and telling aspiring filmmakers to “just go out and shoot something”. 🤯
BFI NETWORK-funded shorts have had some big successes on the festival and awards circuit, but I don’t know that we’re seeing (many? enough?) tangible examples of a SUCCESSFUL BFI NETWORK SHORT TO BFI FUNDED FEATURE IN PRODUCTION pathway.
📢A call out to all producers, tv execs and agents: an unrepresented writer friend has one of the best pilot treatments I've read in a long time. It's very queer, and a rare period drama with a working class POV. Get in touch if you'd like to see the pitch deck!

The wave of shared grief that spilled out of the audience during this scene was tangible. I looked behind me and saw hundreds of faces wet with tears. I hope Andrew Scott knows how much he’s touched people with this work. I hope it’s enough. He deserves the nom, though.
