Today, in 1994 in the genocide against the Tutsi, my father, Edgar Ruhindana was hunted down and then viciously massacred. 27 years ago to this date, I was robbed the opportunity of having someone to call papa. I try not to dwell on what you went through. The way they killed you.

I was born in the Zone Turquoise in '94. Mamans faith in God was nonexistent due to the horrors she witnessed throughout the Genocide. When I was delivered I was barely breathing. After some minutes of deafening silence, I cried.Maman called me Iriho. Faith restored. Imana Iriho.

I tweeted about how hard it was finding a clear picture of my father as I had legit only seen about 3 in my life. Yesterday, on my brother’s birthday, my little cousin sent me a picture of my father. A new and clearer one. Maman says this is how she remembers him. Gorgeous! 💕

So, I asked the lovely man who was driving us around the secret to the all year round white walls. Apparently, they have always tended to bleach the walls at least twice a year not only for aesthetic but to kill/minimise germs or whatever. Turns out its super windy in April.

Ruhindana Edgar was his name. He was a father, husband, brother, son, and friend. He was senselessly murdered over something that was beyond his control. Like many others, my father was harassed and fired constantly in the 1990s because he was a Tutsi. My heart breaks for him.
