Accosted by a stranger while waiting for a hospital appointment: "are we all going to die? Why have you got that shit on your face" (pointing to my mask). "No, but let me explain". Showed him a video of myself barely able to walk, even with a stick. He changed his tune. 1/2
The "unintended irony" award goes to the commentator who replied: "Mate you're living proof that covid damages cognition." Couldn't have done better myself.

When I had c*vid I became (unusually for me) gregarious and wanted to go and see people, do things, etc. If you were a virus, one highly adaptive trait would be the ability to make your host behave in ways which ensure they contacted other hosts....
@joharvey21
Sorry to hear that Jo. I was in the end fortunate enough to regain my balance (mostly). Whether that's down to anything I was doing, or just the passage of time, I have no idea.
Prof. Hunter also doesn't think masks work. I'm no expert, but: article fails to mention that routine symptomatic testing stopped in April '23. Fails to discuss morbidity. Fails to discuss fact that it's a multi-system illness, not just respiratory.

And, behold. The article talks about the last 4 years; it presents the following graph; it ignores what the graph says about the last 4 years.
The analogy between access ramps and HEPA filters is an interesting one. Ventilation is, of course, a physical feature within the meaning of ss 20(4) and 20(10) Equality Act 2010, as the EHRC Code makes abundantly clear....
If tourist attractions want to attract us back we urge them to become more assessible.
Addressing airborne transmission through improved ventilation / installation of cheap and effective air filters will significantly reduce risks, improving safety & inclusivity for everyone.

Clinical update: Masks - Recently we re-introduced mask wearing for everyone in clinical areas. We are pleased to say that we have had no outbreaks during this time and sickness and respiratory illness rates have now dropped significantly…

This is an excellent point. We already have a control group: homeschooled kids. Do they suddenly keel over en masse when they hit university / get sent to 6th form college / etc?

1. A hundred years ago, people knew how to reduce the risk of airborne illnesses.
2. They knew that ventilation was important.
3. They knew how to design buildings, especially hospitals.
4. They didn't have HEPA filters or CO2 monitors.
5. They still tried.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE 🧵
DfE data on school absences for the first 3 weeks of Autumn term (up to 29 Sept) has just been published.
📍Across all state schools, ILLNESS is by far the biggest driver of pupil absences.
📍Absences due to illness DOUBLED in the first 3 weeks of term!

We could. The impact would show up in (for example) elevated levels of car accidents & elevated severity of car accidents. That in turn would be reflected in higher insurance costs.

+1 on this. Friend's daughter reported tunnel vision in one eye + blurred vision, alongside other symptoms. I also experienced visual disturbances.

According to the CDC, around 1 in 5 adults now have a health condition that may be related to their previous Covid infection.

And with each new infection, that % will just keep rising and rising…

I mean, "if it works, then stop doing it" is a pretty novel approach, but then by the same logic if that approach works for them, they'll stop using it and re-introduce masks.
Wut.
"This is because we contracted fewer illnesses than normal, meaning our immune systems need time to adjust to less Covid-19 present. It may mean that we become sick more easily for a while."
So, hypothetically, if someone could establish that a school's failure to ventilate was a breach of an applicable provision (in the Equality Act), then they could ask the Court to order them to sort it out. I express no view on prospects, but I thought it was an interesting idea.

Oh indeed - and I wouldn't suggest otherwise. But I suspect (and I wouldn't put it any more strongly than that) that schools are generally a more densely-populated environment.

THE ECONOMIC COSTS OF LONG COVID, a thread 🧵

Yes, that’s BILLION with a B!
That figure is about a FIFTH of the UK’s annual GDP!

I'd like to think I am good at what I do, but I'm most certainly not a magical genius. My advice is if you want to be a barrister, you have got to really, really want it. Don't be half hearted because it's extraordinarily competitive. But if you're tenacious you will make it.

Chester, I'm all in favour of discussing this. I'm not in favour of abuse. The study *authors* wrote: "We are uncertain whether wearing masks or N95/P2 respirators helps to slow the spread of respiratory viruses based on the studies we assessed."
1/ Underhill LJ's judgment in Osipov probably needs to be read at least 3 times to fully internalise it, but I'll try to encapsulate it on one reading. It sets a firecracker to s.103A & renders almost nugatory that section's sole or principal reason causative test.

The trouble with clean water is that the cost-benefit analysis isn't clear. Yes, clean water *might* prevent the odd bout of gastrointestinal symptoms, but most people are just sick of having to use a special tap if they're thirsty. And then there's the risk of immunity debt....
