UN Under Secretary General & Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa. Previously SRSG UNOAU (2/1/2019 - 31/3/2022) Foreign Minister Ghana (Jan 2013 -Jan 2017)
Many thanks to H.E PM Abiy Ahmed Ali for presenting me with a certificate of recognition for supporting the Ethiopia peace process. Together with all my colleagues in the UN family in Ethiopia we appreciate this recognition of the work of the UN, as this was by no means an
Today (2/1/2019) I have arrived in Addis Ababa to assume duty as the Secretary General’s Special Representative to the African Union & Head of the UN Office to the AU. I leave Nairobi with great appreciation for the commitment & professionalism of my colleagues in UNON. Thank you
(1 of 2) I would like to thank the UNSG

This evening on the terrace of my apartment in Addis, an African city like others across our continent bracing itself against the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The UN/AU & member states working together on a multilateral response can make a difference. We are here to help.
Reading the news from Ghana 🇬🇭 over the last week via Twitter. The news & comments from the many TV, radio & online platforms & individuals reflects how we just love to debate everything!😄We must cherish our Free Press it gives us all the news & leaves us to draw our conclusions
The climate crises is ravaging the Horn. Traditional ways of life & livelihoods of communities are threatened. The UN is supporting vulnerable communities but a humanitarian response is not enough. Finance for countries to implement resilience & adaptation programs is critical
Fake news has come to Ghana, but to set the record straight in the last 72 hours I have not granted an interview to anyone on any subject and neither have I issued any statement on any subject. Have a nice evening everyone.
Congratulations to Amb. Martha Pobee on being appointed as the ASG for Africa
@UN
. This photo was when she was appointed as PR & Ambassador of Ghana to the UN in 2015. She served our country with distinction & I know in her new position she will serve Africa with distinction
Many thanks for a useful conversation on the developments in Sudan and Abyei, and best wishes for the Swiss Presidency of the UN Security Council in May.

The Special Envoy plays a key role in enhancing sub-regional capacities for conflict prevention & mediation.
Very sad to hear of the passing of the last of the founding President’s of the African Union. I met him on different occasions but my best memory was at a state reception in Accra, GH when he joked & danced away. Rest in Peace President Kenneth Kaunda, definitely one of a kind.
(2 of 2) To all the friends, colleagues and well wishers who have been sending me messages, calling me on the phone, and congratulating me, many of whom I have not been able to respond to individually I just want to say Thank you for your kind words and good wishes. God bless you
Thank you very much Your Excellency and my brother, for your warm and kind reception. I look forward to working with you to advance the UN/AU joint priorities in peace, security and development. I know we are all committed to a peaceful, democratic and prosperous Africa.
Delighted to receive the credentials of the new

1/2 Elections are an essential part of the democratic process, they give the opportunity for people to make choices about who they trust to lead them. Across the African continent some of our recent elections have been exercises in self-legitimisation. Our people deserve better.

this photograph of the first President of my country Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Emperor Haille Selassie at the Bole Int. airport always used to intrigue me. Two of the founders of what is today the AU. Whatever were they talking about?
Just before I change over to my next UN assignment, I want to emphasize that the peace & security challenges facing the countries of the Sahel are rooted in poverty & lack of opportunity. It is critical to focus on human security, climate adaptation and building resilience.
My deepest condolences to the families & friends of those who lost their lives in the Ethiopian Airlines crash earlier today, it’s a tragedy & there are no words to assuage your loss. My condolences also to the Management & Staff of the airline & the Govt & people of Ethiopia
Wishing All Colleagues, Friends, Members of the Diplomatic Corps supporting the UN-AU Partnership a very Happy New Year. I look forward to continuing to work with you in 2020 to strengthen the partnership & make a positive difference in strengthening institutions & building peace
Yesterday briefing colleagues from DPPA and Partners on the UN-AU partnership on the work that we have been doing together and responding to a number of questions on how the partnership works in practice.
2/2 The Africa we want will not be built on trampling citizens human rights, or treating those who contest as opposition candidates as enemies. Elections are process through which citizens are to freely choose their leaders, the military have no place in influencing those choices
I’m really saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Kwesi Botchway our most consequential Minister of Finance in Ghana. He led our country through difficult times, was a brilliant thinker and a great mentor. My deepest condolences to his family & may he rest in perfect peace. 🙏🏼
We believe political engagement is key to resolving the conflict & are ready to support the AU/African led mediation efforts. The UN is providing humanitarian assistance in Tigray & Northern Ethiopia. Restoration of services is important to enhance the humanitarian relief effort.
I have just found out that my friend & elder brother, “Alhaji Hearts” passed away two days ago. It’s a shock because he was so full of life that he was the kind of person you thought would always be there. May Allah show him mercy and grant him jannat firdaus
When you haven’t visited any country in our vast continent it’s easy to have misconceptions about Africa, this is Ghana one of Africa’s 54 countries, a continent that is beautiful & diverse. If you haven’t been to Africa you should come and visit.
This book has been my bedtime reading for the last week & it poses interesting questions about the intersection of politics & technology. Technology as the author points out not a morally neutral good. Who develops & controls it determines how it is used & impacts our democracies
Very sad to hear about the passing of Winnie Mandela, a strong African woman unlike any other, committed to the cause of ending apartheid and keeping her husband’s legacy alive while he was incarcerated. Now she has joined her ancestors, may she rest in peace.
Happy 65th Independence Day Ghana! lets continue to focus on building a peaceful, prosperous & inclusive country. My wish for all Ghanaians everywhere is in the first line of our national anthem “God bless our homeland Ghana and make our nation great and strong!”
Wishing you all a Happy New Year, and Best Wishes for 2019, and in Africa the peaceful resolution of as many of the ongoing conflicts in different parts of the continent and giving internally displaced people and refugees the chance to go home and move on with their lives.
Developments in Sudan are worrying. A ceasefire agreement was signed, the parties agreed to its terms and to respect international humanitarian law. Yet still the fighting continues! This is not acceptable, it has to stop. People should be able to live their lives in peace.
These are just a few of the photographs I’m able to share showing Ghana, I hope many more Africans show photographs of their countries, and the beauty and diversity of this continent so that people who don’t know us well can see what we see.

Among the victims of the Ethiopian Airlines crash today were colleagues working with the UN in Ethiopia and UN agencies in other parts of the world. My deepest condolences to the families and friends of our departed colleagues in these difficult times. It’s just heartbreaking.

Thinking about my mother - Dr (Mrs) Anna Tetteh on Mother’s Day and thanking God for bringing me into her life and the time we spent together. May you continue to rest in perfect peace.
Today on Africa Day, I’ve been reflecting on the founding fathers of the Organisation of African Unity now the African Union. They had big ambitions for this continent & daunting challenges but they persevered. We must do same in order to overcome covid and

It was great to spend time & have lunch with these Ladies, all of whom are Ambassadors representing their countries here in Nairobi & are committed in their engagement with the UN to create a better world. I’ve appreciated working with them & will miss them. Thank you & God bless
Just catching up with news from Ghana on Twitter, I’m amazed at the plethora of prophecies! I pray we don’t surrender our ability to analyse issues & think for ourselves in the name of receiving “prophecies & revelations” and accepting them because it’s what we want to hear.
I remember the first time I met him and had a conversation with him. Then I was a first-term young member of parliament when he was the SG and visiting home in Ghana, and I was completely in awe! Then the last time which was a decade and six years later. Incidentally that was
Friday marks five years since the passing of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who has been regarded by so many as a guiding force for good.
Today and every day, we remember him.
Today as we celebrate Founders Day, and our First President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, let’s remember it’s also International Peace Day & we are continuously challenged to support the total liberation of the African continent by achieving peace & prosperity.
It was a pleasure to meet the High Commissioners of India and Rwanda and the Ambassadors of Sudan & Somalia respectively & receive their credentials. I wish their Excellencies a successful duty tour in Nairobi.
Earlier today

Now that they have made it to the World Cup finals I am going to get ready to cheer on France & am wishing them the very best in their campaign after all they are the only African team left in the World Cup 🏆⚽️
Deepest condolences to the Family, Government & People of Japan on the death of former PM Shinzo Abe, had the opportunity to meet him previously. Japan under his leadership was supportive of Africa through TICAD & working with AU member states. May he rest in peace.
Congratulations Madam President @

very happy for you Madam President you have a unique opportunity to be a trailblazer, wishing you all the best as you take on the pioneering role of Ethiopia’s First Lady President
Mrs Rosina Acheampong, my headmistress in Wesley Girls High School, from when I was in form 3 to upper 6th, she showed us what it meant to be a competent, confident, strong, ambitious & stylish Ghanaian woman. She did it all with style & is still with us over 30 yrs later 🙏🏽
Good discussion yesterday with my colleagues ASG Unaisi Vuniwaqa and the RC Catherine Sozi on the work of the U.N. in Ethiopia and the region. Many thanks to Unaisi and our colleagues in UNDSS especially DSS Ethiopia and all you do to support the work of the UN.
We need the youth to be our partners for peace, and I believe that as we involve young people in peace processes & post-conflict reconstruction we will be putting in place the foundations that will lead to increased opportunities, job creation & sustainable development.
Wishing the people of Ethiopia (my new home) Melkam Genna! It’s a beautiful morning and I trust it will be a wonderful day. Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas and a New Year that brings peace and prosperity to this beautiful country.
The COVID pandemic in Africa requires governments on the continent to make extra efforts to communicate prevention measures in multiple languages & to audiences most of whom don’t have access to social media. If there ever was a time to focus on effective communication this is it
Today on International Womens Day, I ask that any person who is the boss in any workplace/organization looks at the women in the office & asks the question, “how can I create a work environment that lets these women be happy, motivated & do a great job?” and then make it happen!
My deepest condolences to families who have lost loved ones in this senseless terrorist attack in Nairobi, our thoughts & prayers can’t bring them back, but you are not alone in mourning your loss. Wishing those injured a rapid and full recovery. God bless you & keep you safe🙏🏽
I found these photos on social media from talented Ghanaian photographers - Yaw Pare & Coby Egyir, (a few didnt have the photographer’s name) and I’m sharing them in the next few tweets. My country is beautiful & is improving its infrastructure, come visit us. This is Africa.
May the new year bring us compassion, hope and a commitment to making peace, while taking care of those suffering from the consequences of conflict wherever they may be in Africa, and in the world.
It’s incredibly sad to hear of the passing of former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. He was certainly one of the pre-eminent global statesmen of our time leading with courage & quiet dignity. Ghana has lost our most distinguished diplomat. My deepest condolences to his family
It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness...
Our young people do not have to be given permission to participate in governance, peacebuilding & building inclusive & prosperous societies. We must include them in deliberations, listen to them & harness their energy & enthusiasim to transform this continent & silence the guns.
NDC will have a Presidential primary & choose our Flagbearer for 2020 but first we have elections to run at the branch/constituency/regional & national level for party executives. I hope our Flagbearer aspirants can focus on assisting that process. Organization decides everything

Wishing the beautiful people of Ethiopia, colleagues and friends a very Happy New Year! Melkam Addis Amet! May this be a year to build peace, reconcile and prosper!
Earlier today, it was a pleasure to join the Executive Secretary of IGAD and Ministers responsible for Gender from the IGAD region for the launch of the IGAD Gender Strategy and the Regional Action Plan on Women, Peace & Security. OSE-HoA, UN Women & UNDP supported this project.
