My analysis on timing for this announcement is that they did it following the arrest of Ukrainian protesters, indiscriminate aggression across the country including the capitol, in particular, and in advance of any potential Russia-Ukraine meeting (should one even take place...)

I didn't work for #MadeleineAlbright but I met her backstage at an event when I was in the USG. I was very pregnant & very miserable (both physically & at work), & she was so kind to me. She was so interested in me, my story, & wanted to make sure I was ok. I will never forget it

Sanctions are punitive & they make life miserable for the target. They make it harder, costlier, riskier for them to pursue nefarious behavior- & in this case they will work to do that. They send a message that you can't be a criminal & still be part of the int'l financial system

Last sanction point (for now) - on Swift. Cutting a country like Russia off from Swift could cause a severe backlash given how much other trade continues with Russia at this time. You want global gas prices to skyrocket so bad you can't heat your home? A move like that takes time

It's not the first time #FIFA has shown weakness in standing up for what's right. If all the teams refuse to play this Russian "RFU" team, FIFA will have to learn the hard way what a true boycott means. And I don't think that's an unrealistic possibility
