Excited to see the evolution of bikeshare and complete streets together on O‘ahu, a tandem effort that previously did not exist. Hoping the synergistic effect means faster development of bike lanes and pedestrian spaces.
Do you consider bike share a form of public transportation? Feel free to elaborate why or why not.
I personally think that bike share should be part of the public transportation network. Buses and trains will never go everywhere and bikes really are the perfect compliment to

Oh yeah,colazzione, un caffè, then you go home for Pauso, drink a liter of wine, and then, well, you're still kinda drunk from lunch so might as well keep drinking until 1 in the morning.
Italy, in a nutshell.
The problem is most US cities chronically UNDERFUND their bus agencies, leading to poor headways and fewer routes.
When you have a well-funded bus system like we do here on Oʻahu, heaps of MC people ride.
Pretty much everyone on my AM
#4
commute to downtown are MC workers.
No one will ever accept buses, rail is the only way to convince middle class people to use public transit.
Buses will forever be seen as “poor people transit”
What is happening on Maui is a direct result of imperialism and land mismanagement. The loss of endemic dryland forests to cattle ranching and water diversion for ag has allowed invasive grasses to proliferate and change the fire regime of this ‘Āina.
Skyline is open! Today, you cannot overstate the word historic, you cannot overstate the word iconic, you cannot overstate the word transformative.
Rides are free for the public through July 4. Don’t forget to get your HOLO card. For more info please visit

When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt.
Leviticus 19:33-34
I don't think it's fair to judge Skyline's initial operating segment. A lot of legacy metros took a few of years to meaningfully serve work and population centers. This is not to say the city can't do more to improve ridership, but Skyline is still a baby metro.
When someone comes for Skyline, I remind them that Honolulu is building an entire 20 mile automated metro with 19 fully-accessible stations with platform screen doors for the less than the cost of MTA building a 1 mile tunnel + a station.
@nilocobau
Even with Honolulu's botched procurement, if NYC could replicate those costs per mile we'd be back in business!

and I have been talking about a HART case for a year now
@SustainableTall
Honestly the Philippines has much more pressing environmental issues to deal with. For one, most of the countries waste goes into open pit drains

straight into the ocean untreated. Also rolling/timed blackouts (very common) will likely keep these units off.
The problem with Twitter sensationalists — you aren’t hearing things from a local perspective.
Here are FACTS 🧵🪡:
• Only 10 of 20 trains are currently certified to carry passengers
•Of the 10, 5 are actively used for interim service with 2-3 trains serving as backup
@AnonymousLeftie
I am aware- I have looked at the transit plans of HART and even worked on it during my time in the senate. none of it justifies a mass transit line closing that early.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Link is a really great, well planned light rail system. And there’s nothing wrong with it being light rail!
But if you want to call it a “light metro” this has the be impossible:
RE: subway definition discussion from earlier this week from my son’s kids dictionary (suburb not cropped for fun coincidence)
Caveat: U.S. English dictionary definition. Know other places use subway : underground passageway (historically, we used for that, but also trains)

Sidewalk and Transit Amenities Program, new bus shelters will keep popping up across the city! ☀️ "The new bus shelters feature real-time bus arrival information, large canopies, additional shade, and increased lighting."
A lot of people think Hawaiʻi is a true-blue state, however, liberal it is not!
There is a HUGE old-boy network here, with lots of corrupt players in power!
Yesterday, we made a dent in that. Hoʻomaikaʻi to the progressive candidates who won their seats! Make us proud! 🤙
Congratulations to Tina Nakada Grandinetti, Ikaika Hussey & Kim Coco on showing perseverance, running tenacious campaigns & changing the face of progressive politics on Oʻahu.
Maika’i. We thank you for your future service to the lāhui. 🎉🎉

My favorite stretch of Skyline is passing the Sumida Watercress Farm after Pouhala Station. An endearing symbol of aquaculture integrated into the greater urban fabric.

History in the making!
@MTA
recently rolled out the nation’s first European-style gangway subway cars, including wider door openings to improve accessibility, hasten boarding & reduce train sitting time. The cars were supported by $3.5B in FTA funding.
Under-reported and underapreciated! All those articles last week were too quick to jump to conclusions.
But still very much an automated commuter rail-esque system until it reaches Middle Street in 2025+.
Māhū have been living amongst us since the beginning of time and Hawaiian pronouns are genderless. 🏳️⚧️
If you hate Hawai‘i, aloha kākou, and Hawaiian culture so much why the fuck would you even move here?
OPINION: "The disease of wokeness has not only infiltrated Hawaii’s Legislature, it has completely transformed it into a partisan conspirator of irrelevant social change." ⤵️
@the_transit_guy
You know it's telling when even Italy, with all it's corruption, red tape, daily pauso, and need for physically stamped documents from people who don't show up half the time, can build a sleek, functioning, high-frequency HSR system.
@UnseenJapanSite
Japanese women have to put up with so much shit from men yet society has such high expectations of them.
And god forbid they be vocal about it.
I feel so bad for them.
NEXT TUESDAY! RideSD Meeting with a special presentation by sandag to learn more about proposed transit connections to the SD airport.
11/17 6:30pm at Quartyard (downtown)
I think the most fun moment yesterday was witnessing Skyline freaking out because it was 2 minutes behind schedule.
ATC be like: “kill the humans if we must, adhere to the timetable for it is our God.”
@iamkennethchan
How is Mexico City, with an extensive, well-used metro system rated below god-awful US cities like LA, Dallas, and…Houston?! Tokyo and Paris, with unparalleled transit coverage and access, not even in the top 5?! This list is a sham.
Apparently if you’re a certain private business you can monopolize an entire lane 24/7
Alt take: Beretania can survive with one less lane, so might as well make it a bus/bike lane 🤷🏽♂️
Peak colonizer energy:
Now that we’ve successfully displaced local Hawai‘i families for a part-time vacation condo, it’s time to go be white savior in the Philippines to celebrate outsourcing jobs. 😂
I went to Manila, Philippines to visit my virtual assistants last week
We have worked together closely for over 1 year now
I could not run my life without their help!
They picked me up at the airport in a new car that one bought thanks to her job with me
Then I took them out
We built one of the most expensive automated metros on earth but we’re only going to run trains until 7PM?!
🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
They should have just built regular commuter or light rail for a fraction of the cost! 🤬
Honolulu Rail Transit car
This is a railway line in Honolulu, Hawaii, scheduled to open in 2023. Hitachi Italian trains will be introduced. It is a 20m class vehicle with a maximum operating speed of 55km/h.
