The problem is most US cities chronically UNDERFUND their bus agencies, leading to poor headways and fewer routes. When you have a well-funded bus system like we do here on Oʻahu, heaps of MC people ride. Pretty much everyone on my AM #4 commute to downtown are MC workers.

I don't think it's fair to judge Skyline's initial operating segment. A lot of legacy metros took a few of years to meaningfully serve work and population centers. This is not to say the city can't do more to improve ridership, but Skyline is still a baby metro.

When someone comes for Skyline, I remind them that Honolulu is building an entire 20 mile automated metro with 19 fully-accessible stations with platform screen doors for the less than the cost of MTA building a 1 mile tunnel + a station.
