It is widely documented that people with autism often have a natural affinity for trains, and BART couldn't be more thrilled to celebrate that during
#AutismAcceptanceMonth
.
See where the announcements are playing and listen to the recordings:
in a more serious tone: its true autistic people can like trains, but it's correlative, not causational. special interests can be anything, and trains are a common one... because theyre common, and lets be real, pretty cool from neruodivergent and neurotypical perspectives alike
i wanna clarify, the upzoning of denny and SLU is almost entirely *not* gentrification. gentrification is specifically when lower-class and often minority residents are priced out, but next to nobody lived here, it was mostly light industrial
i have to say, my main issue is in the phrasing - the tone of "...people with autism often have a natural affinity for trains..." is reminiscent of early 1900's pseudoscience in its absolutism, and especially in the word "nature"
@north0fnorth
its always such a blatant sign of privilege when someone acts like minorities can just fight back against oppression and there are no ramifications for doing so
interesting that the link 2 line goes from a historically black, working class, dense neighbourhood to an overwhelmingly white, super rich, suburban island in the space of one station
why do so many people not care about cascadia hsr / think its unrealistic?? its like 10M ppl living in a straight, mostly flat line that already has pretty good proof-of-concept (amtrak cascades)
@augustAP12
- convoluted transit system that could be good if it was planned well
- composed almost entirely of libertarians and liberals
- think theyre the best cities on their coasts
- incredibly racist
yeah checks out

@googlemaps
to pleaaaase fix link light rail in seattle? the 1 line is the wrong colour and the wrong name, as is the 2 line (though admittedly the 2 line isnt that bad) the 1 line has been green and called the 1 line since 2021!
@19th_c_Houston
its not that serious but i do think if youre gonna bother building a metro / suburban rail network and dont link the airport youre doing something really wrong
@roninpawn
whats funny is im a trans gal, so i know all the things theyre talking about lol. i get slapped in the balls *and* tangled, upskirted, etc 🥹

do not:
-cross tracks when a train is coming
-cross tracks when a train is currently occupying the tracks youre crossing
-cross tracks if your vehicle cant handle it
-hang a patriotic billboard with a poorly written quote in comic sans

@StatisticUrban
ok but more than likely those people will be like "oh thank god i dont have to make insulin anymore". and at what level does everyone agree someone responsible and knowledgeable enough should be in charge of insulin production and distribution? like it just turns into democracy
it lowkey gives racism and/or classism that despite the rest of the continent being more populous, popular urbanists only ever talk about the US and canada, *MAYBE* CDMX if theyre feeling charitable
it really is fascinating just how disingenuous this is - complaining about the ~30m strip of greenspace (that will be replanted) and not the giant freeway that destroyed most of the habitat? get real.
Big changes for West Seattle.
@SoundTransit
will demolish this green space (w/ a heron colony) for light rail -- on columns 165 feet tall.
It will create no new riders nor reduce traffic. Go to our website and sign the petition.
