I've always interpreted "Nothing Happened" as Zoro realizing how much Luffy had been suffering to protect his crew without a single complaint. In addition to taking Luffy's physical pain, he also took the burden of suffering in silence so the crew wouldn't worry.

Zoro has been integral in Luffy's growth as a captain, pushing him to be better at every turn. "Nothing Happened" was an incredible show of loyalty, respect, and understanding. It was a reciprocation of Luffy's willingness to throw away his own dreams for his crew's wellbeing.

There are so many instances of Luffy putting the crew first, or just enduring immense pain for the sake of others. We see it in Whole Cake Island. He is in extreme pain and actively taking blows as he talks to his crew. They're scared and he knows this. He lies and endures.

He recognized that Robin loved the crew deeply, but viewed herself as a burden. He saw this and he put the same target on the back of the crew. In doing this, he was saying “we will stand with you.” He showed her that her life WAS worth living, and she wasn’t alone anymore. (3/5)

A lot of Luffy’s character is revealed via his ACTIONS, not his words. To say that he’s childish and ignorant completely diminishes everything he has ever done. He has a lot of negative traits, but to portray him as a bumbling child diminishes everything he has done. (4/5)

I think, due to the fact that Luffy endures in silence, it's easy to assume that he just doesn't feel pain, but that's not the case. He battles with everything he's got. He won't stop fighting so long as he's got life in him. He often sleeps for days or even weeks to recover.

The only time we really see Luffy complain about the pain is after Porchemy's torture. And this also ties in to his intense need for companionship. He would rather die than lose the people he loves. (Which makes Ace's death so much more painful but that's another thread...)
