If I remember correctly, TDP won 2 out of 42 seats in AP in 1989 and also lost assembly elections when the Congress under Rajiv Gandhi was almost wiped out in Hindi Heartland. But leaders should have BIG ambitions.

Those who are interested in this titbit of electoral history: After becoming the largest opposition party of India with 30 seats in Lok Sabha after 1984 elections; NT Rama Rao also tried to launch Bharat Desam Party, which would have replaced Telugu Desam Party. Wisdom prevailed.
