Today’s Great Jazz Album is “Sunday at the Village Vanguard” by Bill Evans, released by Riverside Records in October of 1961 (recorded live on 6/25/1961).
Happy birthday to the late Thelonious Monk, who refused to testify against his friend legendary jazz pianist Bud Powell in 1951, and subsequently lost his license to play in New York City jazz clubs for years.
May we all have a friend like Monk in our lives.

Erroll Garner teasing bass player Eddie Calhoun with his improvised introduction to “Honeysuckle Rose” on Jazz 625.
Garner frequently improvised intros that contrasted sharply with the rest of the tune, leaving listeners and band members in suspense about the tune and its start.
