anyone incarcerated for more than two years is going to return to their google account deleted, and with it most connection to family, jobs, memories and everything else that allows for readjustment
Why did The Atlantic just target a 23-year-old student and non-public figure by full name in a way that seems intended to endanger them?? Extremely irresponsible
here’s my take: writers (especially those early in their career) are allowed to express underdeveloped ideas and be clumsy in word choice and arguments. That’s what college newspapers and magazines are good for! Big national outlets have more influence and wider responsibilities!
Every “shy trumper” story is: Jessica Smith has never voted for a Republican before, and is hesitant to let her friends know she plans to vote for Trump.
[Correction: Smith was campaign manager for Romney and McCain, a Bush staffer, and is currently Trump’s secretary of state]
Okay, hold on. Bloomberg describes this guy as a "Shy Trumper," someone "hesitant to share their politics with pollsters, colleagues, and friends."

Folks, I am talking about the article's author, who is a college sophomore. Newspapers and magazines have responsibility to make sure their authors, especially early-career ones, don't publish work that is damaging, erroneous or regrettable. Particularly the controversial ones!

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel told employees at an all-hands meeting that he won't release Snap's diversity numbers because it could reinforce the perception that Silicon Valley isn't diverse.
Huge losses for Facebook on its metaverse investments. Profit growth down for the company overall. Reality Labs was an expected growth engine, but lost $10B on ~$2.2B revenue.

I'm very excited to announce that today is my first day as CEO of Slack. I can't wait to start the year by taking a big sip of coffee and logging on to my company's core product.

At the start of the 1918 flu pandemic, San Francisco shut down early to contain the virus. Cases flattened. Progress.
But after protests and political pressure, the city opened back up. Too early — it became one of the deadliest 2nd waves of the pandemic.
If there’s one solution to all the problems happening in New York, it’s to make sure everyone’s agitated and sleep-deprived by blaring sirens and flying helicopters super low all night as a vindictive show of force
she lied publicly about what was happening at the guild meetings (where she is a member, where journalists called her out for lying) and is now pretending this is all a principled stand and that it is all her colleagues who were being deceitful. What a way to treat others.

what a tremendous story. How the $36 billion vitamin industry tricked a generation of adults into believing sugary gummies were the ticket to good health
something I think about a lot — If the promise of AI was to do things that humans were too stupid or error-prone to do, then why has so much of the focus been on replicating creative-work or knowledge-work jobs that humans already do better?
On the one hand, it's a marvel that AI can do tasks like "draw a face" or "write a paragraph" but humans can already do these things, without servers that require massive energy use and depletion of natural resources

i remember reading something where he was asked about how he manipulates actors to get them to deliver the right scenes, and he very clearly said that the only way to get good work is to let the actors be comfortable and in control and manipulation like kubrick's was abuse.
Lots of very fun sentences in this NYMag cover story, including: “Streaming series such as Stranger Things, Never Have I Ever, and The Sex Lives of College Girls may well be federally funded make-work projects for well-connected private-school graduates.”

unreal story: Senator Robert Menendez’s wife hit a man with her car in 2018, killing him. There were no charges, and no media of the killing. But one of the bribes Menendez is accused of receiving was a $60,000 car, to replace the one that killed the man.
