Laios is almost certainly on the spectrum. He’s oblivious to social cues, struggles with communicating his desires, and often feels isolated from the world due to one reason or another. So many little things in his behavior are reflective of the neurodivergent experience.

-Laios’ obsession is shown to be rooted in many of the painful, every day experiences of neurodivergent individuals. A reading people often make of Laios is that he utterly hates humanity and wants nothing to do with it. They take the words of the Winged Lion at face value.

The Winged Lion preys on insecurities and fears. It purposely twists what people wants for its own benefit; trapping them in delusions it weaves for its own benefit. To take anything it says at face value, especially when there’s much evidence to the contrary, is questionable.

Monsters are simple, easy to comprehend, and lack the nuance of the world he can't really comprehend. Monsters are just animals after all and animals pretty much never have the capacity to think about anything other than where their next meal is coming from.

In a lot of ways, this is easier for Laios to relate to. He’s an honest person who often talks and acts solely on his desires, especially for food, even when it weirds out other people.

It is his desire to be closer to the simplicity of the monsters in the dungeon while still maintaining his ability to maintain relationships. After all, the final thing the succubus says to convince him is that all his friends had already turned and were happy in this state.

An often overlooked piece of characterization is what the succubus shows his greatest desire. While it is played somewhat for comedy, it’s interesting to note what it displays. Not the ability to turn Laios into an unthinking monster, but a hybrid.

He so often helps people when he doesn't need to and shows off a genuinely benevolent nature, even when something is detrimental to him. His ending as a character is fundamentally built around this singular idea after all.

Re: Zero Arc 2 is kind of underrated. Might be alone in this but Natsuki Subaru’s Restart, the lap pillow scene with Emilia, seeing Subaru form relationships with all the mansion inhabitants, Rem’s backstory…I don’t think any of it is brought up enough.

Re: Zero is an optimistic story. -Every arc is built around making our characters reach the depths of despair before they succeed against all odds, becoming better people for it. -Subaru has consistently improved throughout the story, with occasional regression he works past.

I think what made Choose Me work so well and distances it from many scenes of a similar nature is that, ultimately, Beatrice and Subaru save each other. This isn't a one-sided ordeal where Subaru comes out the shining hero, making it feel more honest and personal. Thread Time!

@Soul_StormOP The sheer relief clear on Lillith’s face when she saw Edison was alive last chapter convinced me she’s likely in the clear. The idea of it being the “evil” one is also too obvious. Shakka seems the most likely to me, though once again it could be a red herring.
