Irish venues at night have the earliest closing times and shortest hours of operation in Europe. They're also subject to extortionate SEO costs for their troubles. Whether you're 50 capacity, or 5,000, you pay €410 per night to open. #giveusthenight #GE2020 #nighttimeeconomy

Irish nightclubs account for 1.2% of premises nationwide using a standard 7 day publican's licence. Of those active nightclubs, we foresee roughly ten initially (mostly Dublin based) that may open late late at weekends. As we keep saying, it's a moderate change. #giveusthenight

So, in Germany where the government values club culture, venues like Berghain have literally become cultural institutions of their own, that the public want to visit during the day. This is a great example of a multi-use space adapting to Covid-19.

Irish nightclubs (89) account for 0.6% of the amount of liquor licences in use in Ireland. Most clubs don't open more than two nights a week (selling alcohol between 7 to 9 hrs in total). To compare, supermarkets use licence 78.5 hours a week (that offers 24 hr access to alcohol)

One of the biggest barriers to entry for small and specialist venues, who are forced to compete with supermarket chains on the open market just to buy a bar licence! This is wrong and must be rectified in the new licensing reform.

We have never pushed for late bars to open to 6am. They have enough clout and resources to do that themselves if they wish. We are however hopeful that the pub industry in general will benefit from licensing changes, to better fit the needs of all businesses and their customers.

A little bit of recognition by the government in the past to look after the nightclub industry when it needed it, may have helped venues like The Oasis survive. Considering that music or nightlife barely makes it onto the cultural agenda in most councils doesn't help either.

The biggest blow to Irish nightlife in the last 20 years has been the smoking ban. We propose a safe reversal of this measure, and call on Govt to update legislation in time for enactment of new licensing laws this year. Sign our petition now ✒️ #giveusalight

Fair play to the guards on their dance moves! Interestingly, if any of the public happened to stroll up to one of these dances, the organisers would likely be violating the 1935 Public Dance Halls Act.

Government's epic delay to reform licensing means that venues are continuing to be charged outrageous "Special Exemption Order" costs, and must still nominate the nights they'll open a month in advance. We're asking for these costs to be removed entirely in the forthcoming budget

Not one mention of music or music venues/events in Level 1 of new roadmap. This is the nearest: "Nightclubs, discos and casinos will remain closed." No further guidance beyond this. 6 months in and this is the best government can muster?

Delighted to hear special exemption order fees will be waived until end of 2021, which we hope now signals the beginning of the end for SEOs. Of course we want them gone forever, but this is a good start, and a long time coming. #Budget2022 #giveusthenight

The Govt will be making a serious error of judgement if it reimposes SEO costs on night-time venues. It risks making similar mistakes to the Govt in 2008, which then led to many swift venue closures. Read below for a longer statement of ours on this. #nomoreseos #giveusthenight

This is a very concerning issue that'll require updated strategies to help combat. We'll work with all relevant groups to urgently tackle this problem. We hope CCTV will identify the offender wherever this took place, and wish the best for Zoe after this horrible experience.

Agreed. Another reason why opening hours need to extend as soon as possible. Transport options must improve, but the pressure being put on existing taxis is far too great when so many groups are leaving city centre at the exact same time.

The taxi situation in Dublin is absolutely horrendous at the moment. It now feels like you have won the lottery when you manage to get a taxi home. This is beyond an inconvenience now, it’s a safety issue.

This should not be all blamed on pubs or young people. Money must be invested into infrastructure: security, barriers, crowd/waste management for peak times like this. Divert crowds to other parts of town where small events or activities could be taking place @EIAIreland

This should be especially remembered in relation to events industry + nightlife. We watched all of our European neighbours + Northern Ireland use antigen testing to help sectors enjoy some type of return. Venues have shut permanently due to inactivity/uncertainty during that time

Legitimate criticism is due toward the longstanding resistence to antigen testing from public health advisors. Going from snake oil remedy to the official course of action is some u-turn.

Yes. With respect to a lot of Irish people, many don't know what they haven't seen in action yet. The reality is that activity decreases as the night gets later, and the pressure on transport, policing, food outlets etc becomes more manageable with a staggered system in place.

@Mathieunorry @hughescraig90 @AideenFinnegan @GiveUsTheNight Here in London, some clubs close at 2, others at 3, others at 7. Meaning big crowds of freshly lubricated punters don’t happen. Guess when groups go home? When they’re tired. No mad rushes to get booze down the hatch while you can, much less disorder and actually good nightlife.

Waiting around for Nphet to recommend use of antigen testing has been a mistake by government. Whether it's free or subsidised testing kits, Gov need to now just get on with it and more importantly make sure there's an ample supply to end of year.

One of our budget requests was that Gov fund free lateral flow tests. The logical move now would be to implement this as soon as possible, even on a trial basis, while we get through reopening.
