A surgeon that I know was walking his dog near my house. He was dutifully carrying the dog's poop in a bag until he could dispose of it. Being in front of my house, I said "Give the bag to me. I'm a pathologist. We take shit from surgeons."

As a pathologist, the vast majority of my satisfaction comes from MY knowledge that the patient benefited from my concern for excellence. Very little comes from any acknowledgement by clinicians. I am happy for others who get more recognition.

I just celebrated 31 years of marriage to a woman that everyone agrees I am unworthy of. The best part is that she doesn't think so. In her field of public health, she has 160 publications and has never said to anyone "I'd be happy to compare your CV to mine". I'm lucky.

The suffering of residents should not exceed that of their patients.

The availability of good jobs in the field of pathology is low enough that I could not in good conscience recommend the specialty to a medical student choosing among pathology and anything else. It pains me to say that.

A medical student is shadowing a surgeon who does a lymph node biopsy on a woman that shows metastatic endometrioid adenocarcinoma. The surgeon doesn’t know that she had a hysterectomy for endometrial adenocarcinoma. Yet, we pathologists are lazy for wanting clinical history.

@fuzzymittens I bought my son a cake when he was 8 after he failed a math test (he didn't follow the instructions). I had them write "Happy Failure" on it. I explained that failure was part of life. He asked me if he was going to get a cake every time he failed. I said "No".

@AshleyGWinter Went to a crowded bar. My friend was drunk and stood up on the bar and told everybody that I was a pathologist. He said that pathologists are heroes behind the scene at the hospital, making sure that their lab tests and diagnoses are correct. He got us both kicked out.

@smlungpathguy I am jealous of Pathology residents who get to train in a time when access to great faculty and learning is so abundant. Not everyone can train at a place with great faculty in all of the sub-specialties. This evens the playing field to a wonderful degree.

In order not to offend clinicians, I have adopted a new strategy. I will only tell them in the report when clinical correlation is NOT required. Example: Skin of left ear, biopsy: Basal cell carcinoma. Comment: Clinical correlation is NOT required.

The specimen available to the pathologist, whether it be cytology, biopsy, or resection has one goal: to make the pathologist look bad. It is your adversary. It is the job of the pathologist to not let it.
