Was asked an interesting Q re health care digital adoption today. "Why is digital adoption so poor in the NHS"?... my answer "because digital is not seen as the core business of the NHS". This needs to change tho. Digital is everyone's business!

We have a workforce shortage in digital in the NHS, mainly because we've introduced so many rules and business case/justifications to bring effective resources into the service. Red tape is a false economy stifling growth.

Reading the planning guidance, I think ICS and Acute Digital Teams need to start thinking beyond the EHR. These products are simply not designed to deliver the models of care required for the future.

Reading 'traditional' EHR business cases I worry about the thinking - if you are about to buy an EHR you must include virtual and remote care as a MINIMUM. The old core stuff is not the new way of delivering care. I.e. how will your EPMA and Order Comms extend out of hospital?

Had a minor hospital procedure today. It always amazes me how much paper is still used. I was handed the clip board for my preconditions, obs were put on a paper chart and the medical equipment wasn't integrated. The consent form and procedure check-list all paper. Lots to do.

I wish this was true. The architecture we need has not even started to be created. Lots of disparate systems, connected using legacy methods and a spaghetti integration give an veneer of coherence - but a national patient record must be the priority.

A lot of my role is spent working on digital diagnostics. I've implemented a few PACS systems in my time. Digital pathology however is new and evolving but the principles still apply - do not get locked into proprietary contracts and services.
