According to suit actor, Kurt Carley, the Godzilla suit made for the 98 film was so comfortable that he fell asleep it.
“I fell asleep inside because I was cradled inside that suit... because it was made so well.” -Kurt
Original sketch that inspired Roland Emmerich to pursue the Godzilla film and the maquette he commissioned Patrick Tatopoulos to make. Thoughts on this particular version of Godzilla?
These are the four sketches Tatopoulos presented to toho during the pitch meeting, along with a maquette. Though radical, the executives believed the design still kept the spirit of Godzilla.
I’d say it’s maybe More so the writing and sometimes lack of utilization of the animation medium. GTS had good writing with dynamic characters and had stellar monster designs and fight scenes
Its a bit funny how many of us are against live action remakes of beloved classics seeing as how many of them are fairly awful and yet for the Godzilla franchise, it seems to be the opposite when it comes to transitioning the franchise into animation. Why do you suppose that is?
Godzilla 98 concept art. The original design only had 2 rows of dorsal plates running down the back. Toho requested that a third be added and the change was made in the final design.
Reminder:
-toho approved the Godzilla 98 design and requested changes which were done afterwards
-toho did not buy the rights to Godzilla after the movie underperformed.
-toho did not retroactively change the trademark of Godzilla 98 to zilla. He’s his own variant of a variant
From design aspects to thematic undertones, here’s why I see Godzilla 98 as a valid Godzilla incarnation. Feel free to say your reasons otherwise or other reasons you agree.

Toho did not buy the rights to Godzilla 98 and change its name to Zilla. Why would toho have to buy somthing they own? Toho just made a new monster and trademark and gave it the same design. They are two different characters. G98 and GTS are still Godzilla incarnations.
It’s strange to me how people praise the San Diego scene in lost world for reminding them of Godzilla but criticize Godzilla 98 as being that scene but a movie. Wack
