So as I was having awful difficulty with a calving at 3am, I really needed help. I took out my phone and stared at it thinking real badly about ringing my old man and with it in my hand he started ringing me "I heard you drive in the yard, need help?"

He's just turned 15, he lives in town, he milked his first cow this Spring. This morning, a GAA match, this afternoon.......314 cows in 1.5 hours on his own. Reinstating faith in youth.

I learned of a new milk supplier today. 23yrs old, his grandad left him 15 acres, he leased 10 acres off his neighbour, built a parlour himself for €6k. Calved in 35 heifers this year. Sold €2000 of milk/cow on 1.1 tonnes concentrate. Doing all the basics right. *I tips my hat*

9 months after putting a deposit on a solar PV system for the roof of my shed, today I pulled the plug on the deal. The complications of getting it connected and through planning were one thing, but now I'm not even going to get credit for funding the system.

5yrs ago if you asked me about Jersey Cross, my answer would have been very short. All my 1st calvers this year are JEX from a full Pedigree Holstein Friesan herd. I have never been as proud to admit how wrong I was.

Cows didn't touch the phosphorus blocks all summer until now, indicating a deficiency in the herbage. Fast growing grass = low mineral content.

Witnessing nutrient recycling on my farm today. Dung beetles dry out pats leaving them ready for earthworms to mix with soil. 70% of soil passes through an earthworm annually making Phosphorus more available to plants. This soil was a cow pat 6 weeks ago.

Great news! No worm dose needed for my cows again this year!! No worm treatment used since 2017. Liver Fluke also negative. No point dosing what's not there. 👍 Future proofing wormers, keeping them to use on susceptible stock. "Test before you dose"

This is pilobolus, a fungus growing on a cow pat on my farm. Lungworm swims out of the cow pat and uses the moist (note the water droplets) stems to swim up to the top to rest on the black fruit. This explodes and the lungworm flies up on to the grass herbage for livestock to eat

First of my next generation herd!! Dung beetle larvae reared in captivity to increase the population on my farm. Less pasture fowling, less parasites, less flies, less nutrient loss, more bird/bat feed, more money in my pocket and better for environment. 🤑🦇🐦

This is how dung beetles emerge on a well stocked farm that uses very few wormers. Any parasites laid in this pat wouldn't stand a chance. This is Ireland yesterday.

Happy birthday to our youngest team member!! At 15 this chap has fitted right in. Starting on a dairy farm this Spring, he's able to milk the cows on his own, diagnose and drench calves and today spotted a hernia in a cow.....he is also able to give guff to the boss!!

In the year I was born, there was just over 4000 ppl in Portlaoise. I'm guessing there was 3 petrol stations then with 1 or 2 pumps each. There's over 22,000 ppl there today, and I think this is petrol station no. 13 going in.....but its cow farts that are polluting the planet!!

20 years in to my career before I was encouraged to own a stomach pump. It's remarkable there are so few of them on farms. This lady is feeling poorly due to a twisted womb requiring a c-section, some electrolytes will help bring those sunken eyes back out. Thanks @tommythevet

This shed erected in 1905 by Thompsons of Carlow started out as a Hay shed, then a loose shed, then a silage clamp, then a milking parlour, and now its kicked off calving 2019 as a calving shed. Dad has the receipt for it.

Thanks to Doctors, nurses, midwives and emergency staff our 10 week premature boy is cycling around the house scratching his Mammy's walls on his birthday. We owe a lot to Portlaoise General, The Coombe and Temple Street for providing services we couldn't do without.

Milking a few cows in Chile on a recent trip!! Mainly Jersey herd. Very low cost production. Milk price is about 1cent above Ireland. Drought the biggest obstacle on this farm.

Older genetics on the right, newer on the left. Breeding smaller, more efficient, more environmentaly friendly cows that are easier managed and more suited to our system. Using @HerdPlus to improve our herd profile. Guess what?.....the smaller ones are producing more also. #EBI

Seen today. Pilobolus fungus. This is used by lungworm in their infective stage for transport. The parasite swims up the stem and on to the tip which "explodes" ejecting the beggers on to grass. Conditions perfect ATM. @tommythevet @DrDowhittle @ChavasseCharles

This is Dad. His retirement lasted 5 days and 7 hours. He states that he'll be divorced from farming. I have told him I'll be finished before he is! He officially started farming the year milk quotas were introduced with 60 cows, he handed over the reigns in 2012 with 54 cows.

Milking done, milk cooled, hot wash circulated, 180 tails clipped, all in under the hour. Last week we vaccinated the herd for salmonella in 40mins. We have made some bad decisions here, but putting in a rotary has to be up in the top 5 of good ones.

Dad in some humour this morning..."winter is in early...cows tearing up the place....not enough silage...never had to feed in September before...should've spread more nitrogen when we had the chance...cows have no milk" Suppose now is not the time to discuss my Nuffield travels!!

So, moocall alerted me to a calving, quietly got up, put on socks and went to sneak out of the bedroom, but my feet got wound up in my wife's bra that was on the floor and I came crashing to the ground. Think she had the room boobie trapped!!! 😂 😂

Might be a first but a presentation on biodiversity at the #iga dairy tour @Friesian_man . Why do this stuff, Bruce ? Stewardship , in 30 years' time, the kids won't be interested in what the cows did in 2024. An oak tree will mean something @farmfornature

"Silent heat". Prenoun-noun. A term used when a farmer missed a cow bulling because they were too busy giving out about their neighbours' silage cutting tactics. Can be categorised with "Unicorn" "One pint" "teachers working out of school hrs" and other such science fiction.

Our herd is ⅓ Jersey Cross and ⅔ High EBI friesan . I have been told that breed doesn't make a difference in tough conditions. Cows had a 2km walk in torrential rain through mucky gaps to the parlour this afternoon. First to fill the parlour........Jersey Cross. Myth busted.

We are going to worm our cows for the first time in 5years this week coming. We will be selecting cows on visual as to which ones need doing, recording the culprits and not mating them to dairy stock.I think it will be a small number. We have room to do this now.

Testing every cow's milk for yield, fat% protein% and cell count. We do this every 6 weeks to remind ourselves how awesome our cows are. #girlpower 💪💪
