How many are you milking?
" Ah only sixty or so."
Hate how some seem to be embarrassed to state they have an average or below average cow herd.
Herd size is not a competition.

A rural pub. Cards. An aul lad watching from a distance. All involved in agriculture in some shape or form. And these people are going to take a rap to save the planet so urban folks can drive their Suv s and take two foreign holidays a year....
A lot of people asking for more detail. So here goes.
Stripped off the peat to a layer of gravel so expect clear water.
Birch, Sally on island with bulrushes around edge.
4 foot at deepest. Most shallower. Should be full to overflow tonight. Lot of work still.
A farm is a really difficult environment at the moment especially if you are on your own. Not everybody has outlets such as discussion groups. A chat with one of these people was never more important.
This is THE most intense period on farms.
If you are not a user of contractor services consider using for next month.
Get out slurry, spread fert, whatever.
If you value your time it's cost neutral
If you value your health it's priceless.

Had the absolute honour and privilege of spending a day filming with
@davidkerr67
, Dinny, Brendan and Sean. An amazing group of lads who tuned a wet corner of a field into a nature habitat in honour of a man much loved by all.

One of the biggest challenges for older folks during
#Covid_19
is punching in time during what are long days. Asked the boss to come back setting up plant for eve milking during first lockdown. Didn't have to be asked twice. On the pop of 90.
Poignant day with the last visit of Pat Sinnott after 32 years milk collection in this area.Remarkable service in a very responsible job. Wishing him a happy retirement.
I am voting Yes because I don't think the nation should have a shareholding in any woman's body , not least my own daughters. Not going to debate the issue either.

Merry Christmas to all. Thanks for the knowledge and the banter. The end of a year in which Irish farmers had to start defending their right to produce food. In a land that had a great hunger. Stay safe.
@EamonRyan
Most dairy farmers tried diversity pre quota abolition . Didn't work.
Organics is meant to deliver premium pricing , it hasn't.
You can't work succession without level 6 education at least. We are not thickos.
Could be solar in most yards serving the grid. There isn't.
Past the peak and every litre processed. Credit due to all concerned in the Irish dairy industry. No small feat in the circumstances.

There's a reason we are in livestock /grassland farming and its falling from the sky atm. In fact a metre of it give or take falls every year. No extraction costs or storage. 90 % of the world would love to have it.
2018 brought the most severe challenges of most of our lifetimes. By and large the images of our farms and welfare of our animals were protected regardless of cost .We can only hope that wisdom will prevail further afield. Happy Christmas to all.
Interesting experience meeting the college bully after 40 yrs.
You look him in the eye and he looks away.
He knows
I know.
But he's suffering more now than we did at the time.

Dark days in early 2021 in Ireland led to a very positive experience on our farm. Thanks to the

@paulawilliamss
@darraghmccullou
for the empathy. On tonight.
Minor farm accident yesterday.
Could have been a lot worse.
Highlights danger of farming on your own.
Maybe even farming at all.
Cant be too vigilant.
Be careful folks.
Right. Washing our hands Is SO important to slow the spread of
#Covid_19
We need to give our health service a chance to cope. Our hands touch our faces many times. NB

Milking cows gives great peace and quiet atm.
Principally cos it gets you away from your phone and the relentless mainly negative news feed.
Note. There may be other ways to get away from your phone.
All slurry on farm now spread using lo emission technology. Great local service provided by
@PatWalsh78
.
Switched completely to protected urea as N source too. Why wait for legislation in this area?
The farmer environmental debate can be polarised at times , but that meeting in Galway today is a new low.
@MichaelFitzmau1
needs to come out and state his position on the behaviour of some of the audience towards
@NatureNymph
.
Sent this from Holland. Dutch farmers sick with being targeted with environmental restrictions while other sectors ie transport are ignored. Took to the streets.. Literally.
You would think it was a sin to generate economic activity in rural Ireland. Environmental protection an awful lot easier with a profitable cash generative business. 50 % growth would generate teething problems for any industry .These will be solved. Balance required.

Update re sexed on the heifers. After 2 full rounds of AI Non return sits at 78 %. Even allowing for further attrition before calving it would have to be deemed a success. Credit to the rearer who is entitled to let off a bull. Transformational for the business

Conversation about a very elderly man
Wife and family want him to sell the place.
No , he hires a farm manager to help him run the place.
Why ?
Satisfaction.
The part of farming that many don't and won't understand.
Six unit parlours were the engine that drove the Irish dairy industry in the seventies. So much so that quotas were introduced in the early eighties

Status Dry .
2023
Rainfall Up Up.
Grass . Down a little.
Milk price Down 30 %
Ms Cow Down 10 %
Fertiliser spread. Same
Meal Fed . Down 40 %.
Good luck.
The much maligned Irish hedgerow
Dont exist for carbon accounting
Incur penalty for inclusion in bps
As old as the field names on most farms.

Hogan's bare necked arrogance and pure thickness is just what you would like to see in a negotiator. I'd say the Brits would love to see him sunk
#brexit
Talked to a retired consultant. Said a lot of dairy farmers doing things on their farms cos they need a project, building, 2 nd unit. No off farm activity ie sport to give the buzz. Interesting.
Farming good preparation for life in general in a sense. Try to keep a level mood, never too exhuberant or despondent. Calf survives severe malpresentation but not its mother deciding to lie on it overnight.
#calving22
To visit a country with possibly the greatest ag environmental concerns in EU and come home convinced we are facing into a golden era for grass based dairying was not a predictable outcome.
Could keep more cows if we didn't have sheep but hey where's the fun in that? My father set me up in Dorset sheep 42 years ago. This one's for the next generation. Legacy secure

.
Beyond disbelief that we have got to a stage where the highest regulated sector of farming comprising approximately 5.3 % of all farmers takes the blame for all water quality issues with no time frame for mitigation strategies to take effect.
Dutch friend letting out the cows to graze for the first time in 20 years next spring to produce " planet proof milk".
Hadn't the heart to tell him that the environmental wing will still be on his case.
