@Gabino_Iglesias I like the concept of a time period that encourages people to write given how many of us struggle with procrastinating/putting it off. I’ve never got worrying about a coach or fancy programs though - the best way to learn to write is to WRITE. Anything else is a distraction.

Breaks my heart a bit just how many freelancers on here are basically all agreeing that the journalism aspect of their work is smaller and smaller (and not enough to live on). It's all accurate, they're all correct. I'm the exact same. But goodness me, isn't that depressing?

Something I see too often from authors querying for the first time is that they have queried too many agents in one go. If you’re saying that you’ve queried hundreds of agents in just a few weeks/months, that’s probably an issue with you more than your work. #amquerying

I've never edited a lit mag so I'm not sure, but I'm curious whether great writing is ever turned away simply because an email was started with 'Dear Editors' and not a specific name? Usually there are multiple people who could be reading it. Is that so bad? Really?

People proclaiming their writing is a 'great fit for my magazine'. People who submit full color photographs. People who start with 'Dear Editors' proving they've done zero research & have no idea who they're submitting to. These are a few of my least favorite things.

👏Stop 👏 including 👏 non-compete clauses 👏 in your 👏freelance contracts! 👏 The very business of freelancing means working with multiple clients (sometimes in the same sector)! If you're looking for exclusivity, you should hire an employee—not a contractor.

My big mistake for The Shining was reading the book before the film, not after. The film is (in my most humble opinion) not good if you’ve read the book first, but I can see how you’d love it if you hadn’t read it before watching.

Ignore it and come back to it later if needed. Exactly the same with maps. They’re all useful, just not until I know what’s actually going on!

Friends who read. If you open a novel and find a family tree on the first page, how do you interact with that family tree while reading the novel? Tell me all your thoughts!

I need to know if The Life Impossible by Matt Haig is good because The Midnight Library was so disappointing and I couldn’t get into Notes on a Nervous Planet

@CaitlinKellyNYC Caitlin, did you and Matt ever do any webinars about how you generate ideas for pitches/features? It's a really common thing that comes up with freelancers I chat to, basically just 'how do freelance journalists come up with so many ideas' and I remember you mentioned possibly
