Paddington - reactionary, tainted by association w the UK monarchy.

Find it fascinating that every time Just Stop Oil do something it strikes me as incredibly cringe at best and then within a day the reactionary oddballs attacking them have been so insufferable that I'm ready to defend them to the death.
Every one of the 330k 'excess deaths' caused by austerity was an entirely unique individual with their own hopes, dreams, and rich inner life that can never be recreated, who left a human-shaped hole in the lives of their loved ones. This man does not deserve a moment's peace.
Me [someone who was cited at length in Anders Breivik's manifesto and didn't see that as a reason to permanently withdraw from public life]: don't worry, it's not fascism. I promise

Marmalade - associated with, you guessed it, British colonialism (often served for breakfast in the colonies). fund me u cowards i am being silenced
Journalists will frame one party or faction breaking promises as an unacceptable breach of trust, frame another party or faction doing the same as clever politics, and then write think pieces despairing over how people don't trust mainstream politics.
'Those pledges were to get him through that leadership election and job done'
On the fourth anniversary of his leadership election win, Politico UK Editor, Rosa Prince, says Sir Keir Starmer sometimes changes his plan based on his goal.
#Newsnight
There are probably under 5 members of the British commentariat who, whether you like their own politics or not, have the basic good faith to point this out. Seems Crick is one. Either we want probity in public life or we don't - Starmer is as consistently dishonest as Johnson
It's astonishing to think that this Starmer leadership video is only four years old. Note the hug with Corbyn, the attacks on Murdoch, and so much more:
Labour reckon no-one under 25 years old is mature enough to be sure that they're transgender but some 20 year olds are mature enough to serve as members of parliament.
🔴NEWTON ABBOT: it seems Labour candidate Jacob Cousens is a 20-year-old student at Durham University, 306 miles from Newton Abbot and six and a half hours by train. Cousens is the youngest main party candidate so far, but how does this fit in with his university studies?
International Monetary Fund approves $4.7 billion disbursement for Argentina, commending President Javier Milei’s “bold” cost-cutting measures to revive the nation’s struggling economy
Winnie the Pooh - dresses in red, famously the colour of the red flag
Paddington - fled Latin America in the 1950s, speaking perfect English. Backstory is, to be charitable, not watertight. Not sure what more I need to do to demonstrate that this project deserves a major grant.

People will be on this website posturing as antisemitism experts then pop up after several months like 'yo been doing some reading, u guys ever hear about the "Dreyfus affair"?'

A year has now passed since my favourite ever tweet, when George Galloway asked the Pope to intervene in his Twitter beef with Alan Sugar. Precious memories ❤
With apologies for my second 'thrilled to announce' post in a week, I am - yes - ✨ thrilled to announce ✨ that in August I'll be starting a postdoc at
@IASH_Edinburgh
researching colonial continuities in the literature of the French far right. Very excited to get started!
Very pleased to have signed a book contract with Liverpool University Press (Contemporary French and Francophone Cultures series) for my upcoming monograph, Towards a Community of Friendship? Islamophobia and Being-in-Common in Contemporary French Literature and Film! 📖
I truly believe that, had social services had the funding to intervene in her life in ways that weren't punitive, my mentally ill sister might still be alive. None of this is abstract. It's not about who can win the game of politics.
Posts like this reproduce the racist implication that 'migrant' is in fact a biological status, and by extension that people of immigrant descent can never 'really' belong in the country of their birth. Almost all of that French squad was born in France.
Keep hearing French media referring to the vote of suburban women in the US elections as 'le vote des femmes des banlieues', which is a great example of how a translation can be both technically correct and 100% wrong
Some important context about this guy is that he worked in South African gold mines in his teens. He later claimed it was because he 'wanted to see the end of apartheid first-hand', even though it happened a full decade before the end of apartheid.
Now that the contract is signed, I'm excited to share that I'll be spending 2023/4 as a lecturer in French Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of Bristol! Grateful to the future colleagues who have already reached out to welcome me - much appreciated!
Now that the contract is signed, I'm happy to say that I'll be spending the next academic year... still in Stirling, as a lecturer in French Studies. Looking forward to remaining a part of this great team!
4 years today since my big sister passed. She never let me get a word in edgeways, drank at least 2L of full sugar Irn Bru every day (but ate almost nothing else), and, like so many other mentally ill people without the safety net of properly funded support services, she mattered

Very pleased to have been awarded one of these fellowships, staying at Edinburgh after my current postdoc ends to work on finishing my monograph manuscript!
Meet our Fellows🎉
We are excited to announce the recipients of our

postdoctoral fellowship scheme to award 1⃣4⃣DTP1

fellowships between Jan-Sep 2023.
🔗Learn about their research & what they hope to achieve as Fellows:
People read about the banality of evil and all they understood was 'Nazis seemed like normal guys'. It's this: refusing to oppose genocide because factional interests matter more; Not Good Politics. Convincing yourself you're one of the good guys, or at least that you're Sensible
Those in Moscow protesting Alexey Navalny’s cruel death are showing incredible bravery.
We who live freely extend our admiration to those ready to risk arrest, or worse, for their rights.
We must always distinguish between Vladimir Putin’s rogue regime and the Russian people.
Rafah was where they told them to go. The 'safe zone'. There aren't really any words any more, but I hope every single person who helped justify or validate this, who demonised those speaking up against it, is haunted by it until the day they die.

Was dreading opening my emails after a day on strike, so it was a nice surprise to log in and find this waiting for me. Can't wait for this to be out in the world!
Huge congratulations to
@FraserJMcQueen
who has been awarded our postgraduate essay prize for his piece on the novels of Michel Houellebecq, the geographer Christophe Guilluy, and the Far Right in France. Congratulations Fraser!
Very pleased to share that, travel restrictions permitting, I'll be moving to Nancy in September to take up a role as a maître de langues at the Université de Lorraine!
Very pleased to say that my latest article, in Modern & Contemporary France, is now online! Christophe Guilluy's France Périphérique and the Absence of Race from Michel Houellebecq's Sérotonine.
By way of comparison, the Queen's funeral and lying-in-state cost the taxpayer £162 million. Presumably Charlotte Gill also considers this to be 'woke waste'.
If you’re shocked by the £800k taxpayer-funded Shakespeare study, then I’ve got more bad news (although knowledge is power 💪) 🧵
Here are other examples the Arts and Humanities Research Council has funded (with our money):
Sad to be finishing an amazing 10 months (!) at

'Make a pass at a girl? You're a rapist' - totally normal thing for 56-year-old Toby Young to be saying about interactions with girls literally just out of school 🙄
The adults deserve to live too. The ones without sparkling CVs full of academic/professional achievements deserve to live too. The ones whose politics you disagree with deserve to live too.
Happy birthday ❤
'I'm older than you were when you died
I'm nervous inside
In the afterlife are you the age you were when you died?
It's puzzling me
That would be something to see
Face to face with an older sister who's younger than me'
Genuinely chilling to watch consent being manufactured in real time. A media/political class lining up to cheer on colonial genocide while at the same time claiming that any attempt to contextualise or nuance violent acts committed by the colonised is - yes - cheering on massacre

Fascinated by the use of 'Colin' and fascinating possibility that he thinks before transitioning you were the golfer. Assigned 61-year-old Scottish golfer at birth.
Teenage girls in abayas reflecting that it's nice to feel like part of history as the first women of colour to be denied a state education by a 34-year-old gay man.

imagine being georges perec and sinking months into writing a 300-page novel without using the letter e, only for your name to then be on the cover. heartbreaking
Michel Houellebecq: I, the author Michel Houellebecq, believe that we should commence ethnic cleansing.
Anglophone Critics: Who can tell if he is truly right wing? That studied ambivalence, that inscrutability, that masterful play with readerly expectations. An enigma.
What comes through in all these well-intentioned job market advice posts is our unwillingness to admit that beyond a certain point the differentiating factor is luck. There's a pool of excellent candidates; who gets a job or doesn't is determined by who is hiring & what they need
After the saga of getting here yesterday, I'm very happy to be in Philadelphia for the 2024 20th & 21st Century French & Francophone Studies Colloquium and looking forward to presenting this afternoon!
Hopefully not self-indulgent to tweet this, but I just had a message from someone whose work I use heavily in a publication to thank me/say how much they enjoyed it. I have constant impostor syndrome, so it meant a lot - if you're in a position to do it to someone, please do!
For reasons not worth getting into, I just had to find a French translation for 'gobstopper'. Don't think I'll recover from finding out that it's 'couille de mammouth' for some time tbh.
So incredibly distasteful to see how she's being made to perform repentatance/an acceptably 'British' version of femininity in the hope of regaining a citizenship she never should've lost to begin with. All of which is framed here as light entertainment, à la Hello magazine.
JOB KLAXON 📢
If you're wealthy enough not to need a wage and are looking for ways to improve your CV, giving you an advantage over those of us who do need an income, this might be the position for you! 🔥
One year today ❤💔
Sometimes feels impossible to remember a time when my big sister was still here, others I'll see something and think 'I need to message Alison about this'. Your life is forever split into before and after.
Very excited to be at
@BowdoinCollege
to share some of the findings from chapter 1 of my upcoming monograph. Grateful to
@MBedecarre
for the invitation! 🙏
Was initially given a month to complete minor thesis corrections but, given how little time a summer spent working in retail and applying for jobs left me, had to get an extension. It's now 2:30 am two weeks before my final deadline and the corrections are in!

Always feel these posts are self indulgent, but writing stuff out helps: my granny passed away yesterday of Covid-19. The strength she showed to go through so many hardships and keep smiling, & loving her children, grandchildren, & great grandchildren will inspire me forever 💚
New article just dropped! Very pleased to be part of this excellent special issue of

I wrote this one year ago today while sitting in a hotel room in Bristol, a town I'd never visited before, looking at the comfort Nando's I'd bought myself to ease my nerves while frantically preparing to interview for a job I didn't really expect to get. It's been ok so far tbh.
love to go to nando's and order the 'macho peas'. this is the only time I eat any vegetables at all, as otherwise i'd be too scared of being mistaken for some kind of GIRL
Not been a great week (nothing too serious, just an annoying injury that won't go away and I love to feel sorry for myself), so this was a nice pick me up this morning ❤
Pleased to have been shortlisted for this alongside some fantastic colleagues. Huge congratulations to

on being awarded the prize for what sounds like a great project!
Congratulations to the winner of the 2022 Postdoctoral Prize Fellowship scheme:

joke's on all the leverhulme acceptance/rejection people - the real kings and queens among us did not get their act together enough to apply for one this year
Refusal of
@StirUni
to spread strike deductions (only uni in Scotland to do so, & one of only a handful in the UK), when some members' household incomes have already fallen due to redundancies, is shameful - esp given extra workload expected of staff this week.
@UCU_Stirling
If you're thinking anything along these lines, maybe consider that if the introduction of a minimum wage and Sure Start outweigh the Iraq war in your personal balance sheet, you're telling yourself something about who you do and don't consider valuable forms of human.
Issuing an official apology on this post - I just thought you may be genuinely interested in baking delicious treats, or that your students might like to practice. I am learning and I am growing 🙏
Genuinely amazing how every so often there's a tweet with about 5000 likes saying 'here's this rude/disrespectful question my student just asked'.
'Don't make fun of your students on Twitter' still applies even if they really are being obnoxious. This isn't complicated.
