Donating to our hardship fund is a very real and powerful way to support
@ucu
colleagues sacrificing pay for the future of our sector. Details are:

For anyone who can't keep up:
USS now agree with us (UCU) that there's no deficit for our employers (UUK) & so cuts to our pensions are unnecessary 😌
But they (USS) need approval from them (UUK) to reverse the cuts they (UUK) only supported because of their (USS's) advice 🤦
Earlier today this car drove aggressively through a group of students supporting the
#UCUstrike
. We immediately called
@StirUni
campus security who said they'd seen the incident and wouldn't be taking any action.
Eeeek
@StirUni
looks like a wee editing goblin has been at the graduation videos from yesterday and at about 49:00 you’ve “dropped” a clip of a graduating student! Luckily we’ve got an unedited version here for anyone who doesn’t want to watch the
#stirgrad
director’s cut:
Understandable, we’ve all “accidentally” edited out the precise moment a graduate walked across the stage as part of a dignified protest in solidarity with
@ucu
@UCU_Stirling
before. Can happen to anyone, guys xoxo
Yesterday we posted edited footage of our graduation ceremony in error and we apologise. Footage of the full ceremony has now been restored and we would like to congratulate all students who graduated.
For the next 3 days UCU Stirling will be on strike.
We offered to withdraw strikes on graduation days in return for restoring the 50% pay deducted from staff involved in the marking & assessment boycott.
Stirling management chose to put acting tough above averting a strike.
Tomorrow marks the start of 10 days local strike action for our branch
@StirUni
. We desperately do not want to strike now, but have been left with no choice after suffering over 3 months of 50% salary deductions, some of the very harshest in all of Scotland
@ucu
@UCUScotland
Fantastic turnout at the
@NUSScotland
/
@nusuk
rally in Edinburgh today. Pink beanies and blue skies look great together - almost as good as students and staff standing together in solidarity.
Class of 2023 we are so proud of you. From picket lines to pink sashes, your support and solidarity has been incredible.
Students are with us,
@UCEA1
. It’s time to talk to
@ucu
and

This week has been hard as we've went it alone as the only Scottish university on strike. But our spirits have been kept afloat by the fantastic solidarity shown in the form of generous hardship fund donations, tweets, rally attendance, and petitions. Thanks to you all!
Today's picket theme is: *the gender pay gap*
Did you know that women in UK universities are paid around 15% less on average than men with similar experience and publications?
More info here:
Many thanks to all the graduands / now graduates, and their friends and families, who showed their support for staff on strike today.

#StirGrad
Day 2 of our strike, and we'd like to say thank you to Audrey from
@unisonscot
for refusing to cross our picket and showing solidarity with our fight! ✊
#OneOfUsAllOfUs
Day 5: Students have now lost 1 of the most important teaching weeks of the year. And for what? Mgmt intransigence? A refusal to even consider the return of wages that workers have already earned? Time to talk; we can still give students the experience they deserve next week!
We've been working with
@StirUni
and are very pleased to announce:
• staggered strike deductions
• commitment to pay casual workers for cancelled work
• dialogue with funding bodies about the possibility of extending fixed contracts
and more (see latest branch email).
We will be stepping down our strike action as of Thursday, Sept 21, after accepting an offer of a flat ex gratia payment, equivalent to 5 days of annual leave, to all colleagues who faced MAB deductions. Of the whopping 98 members who attended our urgent meeting, 85% voted yes.
Update: we were invited to a meeting with mgmt at 4pm, where we were simply told that returning any amount of deductions was considered a 'red line' that they would not cross. There may be a further mtg on Monday, but for now, the strike goes ahead next week.
Still cheerful on day 2, despite the cold. Management could end this right now and we could get back to doing what we love. But until they do, this is where we'll be.
#OneOfUsAllOfUs
Day 4 of our strike. During the summer MAB, mgmt said it was a national dispute about which they could do nothing, and refused to call for UCEA negotiations. The current dispute is local, and could solved entirely by
@StirUni
alone. Will we hear from them today?
Solidarity from Stirling to all branches taking part in strike action! The struggle is hard but your cause is just; may you be buoyed on the pickets by the support of colleagues, students, and well wishers✊✊✊
So begins the 3rd day of our local strike action. We should be teaching, inducting new students, doing research, and helping the university run, but here we are. Will management respond to us and enter negotiations today? We hope so; it's what our students deserve
Today we start 2 weeks of local strike action, the only branch in Scotland to do so. Why? Because
@StirUni
punished staff by making some of the highest MAB deductions (50% since June) in the sector. They may want to hide behind UCEA, but their response has been specific and cruel
🚨 BREAKING: Muhammad, a postgrad student at the University of Stirling, has been detained by the Home Office despite having a valid student visa.
🔒 He’s now been held at Dungavel detention centre for 7 weeks.
📣 Share this and join us in calling for his urgent release!
Tomorrow morning, branch representatives will meet with
@StirUni
for what we hope is a productive, meaningful, and serious conversation about how to move forward. Students, staff, and parents deserve nothing less
@UCUScotland
Congratulations to our incredible students graduating today. Know that we are proud of you. Working with you all is an honour, & your support is everything. We don’t want to miss any more graduations
@UCEA1
- please
#settlethedispute
Well done everyone who joined the
@UCU_Stirling
picket today. Good vibes, great conversations, staff-student solidarity ... and delicious cakes too!

There was no offer in advance of our strike action, perhaps because it was assumed that we were too tired, knackered, and demoralised to follow through. Instead, this happened
Earlier today this car drove aggressively through a group of students supporting the
#UCUstrike
. We immediately called
@StirUni
campus security who said they'd seen the incident and wouldn't be taking any action.
Sunday Inspo: While our pay situation remains dire, on Friday we were notified of a USS pension consultation that will see benefits wrongly removed in 2022 fully restored in April 2024. This only happened because UCU members took action. Striking works. Support your union ✊
Despite challenging times, we've had a big surge in membership over the last two months, composed both of new colleagues & existing staff joining for the 1st time. Welcome to all of you; we look forward to seeing you in branch meetings & working together for a better future❤️✊
Can we just take a minute and applaud
@aberdeen_ucu
on the brilliance of this sign (and
@joshpizpom
for his investigative work in uncovering this heinous phrase from Aberdeen VC George "pain-along-the-way" Boyne's WhatsApp messages?)
We made it! A huge thank you to everyone who took part in the strike, whether on the picket lines or elsewhere. And to everyone else who supported us too, in a hundred different ways.
But we're not done just yet.
Members please read on for instructions...
Remember: you have a legal right to join a union and to take part in IA. If a manager threatens the future of your career, team, or programme because of your TU activity, they are engaging in trade union victimisation and BREAKING THE LAW. Know your rights
during the strike we felt such solidarity and connection with colleagues, and had a taste of evenings and weekends to ourselves. let's carry this on into ASOS. use
#uculunchbreak
and
#ucuhomefortea
to show how you're spending non-work hours and remember what we're fighting for.
We're delighted that we've just smashed our ballot threshold & are sitting at 52% well before the return deadline! To those colleagues who have already voted, thank you; to those who have not yet, use the wage loss calculator below to see why you should!
#ucuRising
@UCUScotland
We don’t have to hype this up in any way whatsoever.
We are simply asking every UCU member to click this link and see how much pay you have lost in recent years.
Let us know the result for you in the replies.
And please just vote YES.
#ucuRISING
Right troops (
@UCEA1
and
@RKJethwa
that means you too, babes), it appears it's time to
#settlethedispute
so here's some ✨thoughts✨ from everyone over at UCU Stirling. 🧵
Picket remains resolute
@UCU_Stirling
Sending pictures of dogs on picket to striking colleagues near & far who could not join us today
@outwither
#ucuRISING
Day 6: We do not believe even the most hardline of uni SMTs are united. We know that more far-sighted members see the needless damage that non-negotiation is doing to student experience, recruitment, NUS scores, and morale. Use your influence and leadership; save the day.
We agree - 200 students left without teaching (and we know that many more will have been impacted) is by no means a 'minimal' disruption,' as this action has continually been described. Time to negotiate!
@UCU_Stirling
It’s time to negotiate
@StirUni
, 200 students left sat in their FIRST ever lecture with no lecturer & no information was not a great first impression.
