Lt Col Jimmy Stewart. 453rd BG , 703rd BS. He led his squadron of B-24s over Germany 20 some times. Starting as Private Stewart he retired as Brigadier General after 27 years. Thank you Sir. #WWII

B-17 formation.. each time an airman swung up into the B-17 he knew it might be his final day. But he likely did not dwell on that.. he was part of a team that was tasked with knocking down enemy aircraft. And there is nothing wrong with being afraid. #WWII

Feb. 1942 : Brig Gen. Ira Eaker begins the massive job of recruiting, developing, training, and transporting Air Force units to Europe. One of those units, the 379th, will include a high school drop out, my father, and transform him into a B-17 pilot in 17 months. #WWII

@FrancesBekafigo Could be opened from inside the turret. Just had to point the guns down, the hatch was behind gunner's head. And turret operated independently of planes electrical/hydraulic systems.

Bomb bay doors open, bombs drop out and everything below for miles down is visible if it is a clear day. The temperature in the B 17 is - 40 C, the ambient temperature or in plain English, the temperature outside. The gun windows are opened. Any exposed skin can freeze. #WWII

Tomorrow, (Dec 13, 1943) Lt KDW takes off on his 25th and final mission, Bremen. It is the third time this crew has bombed Bremen, a critical target. I'll post some lines from his #WWII combat diary on the mission... he is afraid he is going to be shot down. (my dad)

Appreciate that, I only wish I had realized what my father, and all of the 8th AF did in #WWII while he was alive. I was clueless until after his death when my mom gave me his Diary. I'll be doing excerpts from all the missions beginning June 29. Thanks!

The 392nd BG flew 285 missions claiming 144-45-49 e/a. The cost was the loss of 127 of their bombers. I hesitate to post the crew below as all ten were #KIA when the bomber went down. But I also want to honor their service and recognize the incalculable price they paid. #WWII

Dec 13, 1943, eighty years ago, my father walked away from his B 17 for the 25th and final time. Minutes later his CO tricked him into signing up for 25 more missions, then the crew rolled him in cold mud. He would soon return to the U.S., serving a total of 24 years. #WWII

In October of 1943, Joe Noyes body washed ashore in Berck-Plage, France. His aircraft fell out of formation in September of 1943 and was never seen again. He was a B-17 pilot. #WWII

"Memphis Belle" of the 91st Bomb Group. After flying 25 missions it was sent back to the U.S. for a bond tour. Had a long history of neglect and vandalism. Finally restored and is on display at National Museum of the USAF, Dayton, Ohio. @AFmuseum #WWII

The ship flown today by Wooldridge's crew was the bomber "Bad News." The flak was heavy and the ships were rocking and shuddering. Luckily the crew came back and it was certainly not his worst mission.... that mission is coming up Oct 14th, Schweinfurt. #WWII

@sonofsamsung1 @FrancesBekafigo A bit like this one. B-17G #43 -38172 The Toggler/bombardier,  Sgt George Abbott, was killed, the instruments were all but obliterated. With no oxygen and the nose barely recognisable, the pilot 1st Lt. Lawrence DeLancey, brought the B-17 home saving the lives of the crew.

Part of a 379th Bomb Group crew under their B-17. On the left a former drop out at 16, truant, trouble maker becomes a B-17 pilot along with thousands of others who would form the 8th Air Force. That pilot was my father. Lt KDW. #WWII
