The Church has relied on "average" men to lead parishes. Not intellectuals. Those with intellectual aspirations get bored with parish life & mundane tasks that keep a parish afloat. And they really get bored with the routine personal problems parishioners need help with. 🧵

In the Orthodox world, seminary is a "high school" experience, out of which flows a steady stream of young men with a basic theological education (for a typical high school intellect) that will eventually get married & be ordained. A few will be selected for the "academy".🧵

In >2O years of Priesthood, I've never received a living wage. We've been on EBT, my wife had to work & I've held a # of secular jobs (ask me for bus driving stories!). At one parish, we were the 3-highest cash pledge. I'm not bragging because there are lots of clergy like me🧵

True religion always stands in opposition to politics. The prophet opposes the king when he is wrong, even if the king is anointed by God. For us, God comes first before any political theory. If politics comes before religion, it becomes a religion of its own.

I think this shouldn't be controversial: monks & nuns belong in monasteries. They are tonsured to a community, & should avoid leaving it unless circumstances compel them. That's actually the Tradition. I've seen what happens to monastics who travel too much. It harms them...🧵

I'm blessed with a few brilliant former-Reformed, who are of immense help in "translating" things I don't understand that inquirers ask. I usually ask them to "provide subtitles"... because it is a very different 'language'

@RWApodcast While I agree with you in essence, I would add that the dehumanization of Russians in western pop culture is a real problem & I see why Russians would take that seriously. He certainly wouldn't say that about an Arab or a Chinese woman.

So, out of the proverbial crypt came the old topic of "Parish Rectories," also known as "Church Jail" to some priests. They were a good idea before cars & telephones. No commute, & you always knew how to find the priest. It was also from a time when people were more respectful🧵

Porn Addiction was brought up in the context of the Trans stuff. They are both profligate, but right now everyone is happy to tell you they are transing, but nobody wants to discuss their porn preferences or how many times they 🤧. One has no shame, the other is all shame.

You are Orthodox, not when you "identify" as Orthodox, but when the Bishop receives you into the Church. The Bishops have the responsibility as well to say you aren't Orthodox. You don't get to self-define any more than you get to self-select your race or sex...

This is one reason why publicly Orthodox folks should be cautious about hitching themselves to folks outside the Church. Without the guardrails of Tradition, those outside the Faith can make huge mistakes. You don't want to go down with them...

Being polite doesn't mean being a "wuss" or compromising the truth. It means speaking plainly & truthfully without insults/epithets. It means not letting the other person take control of your emotions & make you look crude/ignorant. It means giving a way for the other to repent

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm not expecting huge #'s of RCC converts anytime soon. Most people are attached to a church right now for sentimental reasons: rites, rituals, social activities following rubrics, etc. Content and meaning are not as important, if at all. It's the rhythm...

...you can't fix all of your problems with theological books. My advice: read a theological book and, when you have finally put it into action, then pick up another one. Focus on practicing the virtues rather than just reading about them.🧶

It's funny how Americans are attracted to ppl who are super-self-confident. Modesty or shades of meaning, even expressions of doubt or openness to other possibilities, are usually interpreted as weakness. We're not subtle people. We don't get it unless it hits us over the head
