EMILIA PEREZ is a wild ride! A mad, sincere crime musical/telenovela. Jacques Audiard took a massive risk with it and if you let yourself go, it pays off beautifully. Karla Sofia Gascón is the heart and soul of the film and I love Selena Gomez and Édgar Ramirez too #Cannes2024

#BarbieMovie is so fantastic, everything I was hoping for and more! Absolutely hilarious, sweet, charming and madly inventive, with the same chaotic energy as the best mainstream ‘80s comedies while being one of the strangest, maddest, wildest studio films. I adored it!

I absolutely loved RED ROCKET, so refreshing to watch a film whose scriptwriter isn’t constantly trying to show the audience its modern moral credentials, challenging us with a terribly flawed protagonist. It’s often very funny and so engaging with some beautiful compositions

CHALLENGERS is pure cinema, at its sweatiest, horniest and most seductive, with a propulsive direction that knows when to slow down, all in moods and vibes, and a banging soundtrack. Some great grownup fun and quite simply the most homoerotic film I’ve ever seen…

The audience at the Royal Festival Hall for BONES AND ALL was fabulous, giving a rock star reception not just to Timothée Chalamet but also Taylor Russell and Luca Guadagnino (he was moved), enraptured during the film, gasping without overdoing it… A memorable screening! #LFF

#Dune a bewitching, unashamedly solemn and sumptuous spectacle with one awe-inspiring shot after another. The scale of it all is insane and it feels like a real, very physical world, not actors in front of a blue-screen. It blew me away, I still can’t quite believe it!

TERRIFIER 2: Art the Clown is an iconic, sadistic horror monster like we haven’t had in years! The slow paced, nightmarish and grubby atmosphere with these faded shades of orange and blue is impressive. The gore is so extreme though, I couldn’t handle the infamous bedroom scene

I adored BIRDS OF PREY, an enormously fun and genuinely strange blockbuster that feels like a 90s independent film. Like Doug Liman’s GO/Greg Araki’s NOWHERE/Mike Mendez’s THE CONVENT/a Peaches music video thrown in a dayglo blender. The entire cast is fabulous!

Shia LaBeouf delivers one of the most unhinged performances ever committed to screen and Aubrey Plaza is on fire, basically serving us her Janet Snakehole character. I can’t believe Megalopolis exists, it is strange in ways we had not anticipated. Cinema!

At a time when experimental cinema has become calibrated for audiences worshiping at the altar of A24, it feels so refreshing. There’s a scene in which Coppola uses a technique which I believe has never been attempted before and one that drew surprise gasps from the audience.

That first episode of LOCKWOOD & CO is fab! I love the premise, it’s quite a lot darker than I expected with a real sense of danger but without being dour and there’s some great yet effortless world building. The soundtrack rules so hard too

THE KILLER suffers from the usual Netflix conundrum. Without the studio’s money it might not have been made but it looks and sounds absolutely fantastic in a big loud cinema screen. Yet Netflix is denying this experience to the vast majority of audiences

The free streaming service from the Paris Cinémathèque, Henri, is still going strong! A fantastic selection of rare films (like this current Otar Iosseliani retrospective). It’s free, with English subs and not geo-locked

I can’t stop thinking about THE SHROUDS. It may well be Cronenberg’s most personal film, exploring digital paranoia, grief in a way only him could and bodies, physical decay and disembodiment across identities, with him using a detached tone and glacial pace. #Cannes2024

Jia Zhang-ke astonishes with CAUGHT BY THE TIDES, a stunning, melancholic and evocative film essay in which he looks back at the last two decades in China as well as at his own work. If the jury is bold enough it will give Zhao Tao a much deserved best actress award #Cannes2024

KINDS OF KINDNESS: Yorgos Lanthimos’s TWILIGHT ZONE. An anthology of weird, unnerving stories infused with the dark, surreal and confrontational humour of his first films. Uneven and slight perhaps but at its best it’s a lot of fun. Emma Stone is fearless #Cannes2024
