For about a million years, we’ve been in an “ice age,” going in and out of glaciations, via Sun energy. But the underlying carbon reservoir did not change, until we dug it up and burnt it. Now, we’ve killed the ice age, and we’re headed back to early Cenozoic temperatures.

So the plan for COVID, for the economy, and for the climate appears to be rich people doubling down on survival for themselves while everyone else suffers and dies, backed up by bought-off media and police. Did I miss anything?

One gets the feeling that the human enterprise is managed by a relatively small group of people whose objective is to extract wealth from the Earth and to keep it for themselves, regardless of the consequences. They don’t have a plan, other than that.

Climate denial is not about science, nor even climate. It’s tribal affirmation, like hating on immigrants or disputing the election. Appeal to data is useless b/c it misses the point: deniers need to be right so their tribe can dominate. Sadly for them, the Earth doesn’t care.

To be a “doomer” is not to argue for or against any type of “action.” It is simply to observe the configuration of forces in the world today and to conclude that the result cannot be good. To be a doomer is to face the obvious, though unpleasant, truth. 1/

I have finally understood “latent heat” (I think), and why it matters to the timing of collapse. When ice melts, IT DOES NOT HEAT UP, it just melts. That is, ice at 0°C melts into water that is also 0°C. The energy holding the ice together is the “latent heat.” 1/

The possibility of nuclear war has a way of concentrating the mind. It’s a limit case of collapse, removing the future in a day rather than a decade. The benefit is the same: reality is revealed to be only the eternal now, the ever-unfolding moment in which all our life is lived.

@onedyingplanet @MrMatthewTodd With respect: I think you would just sit in your seat, though snacks might not be available. You’ve provided a great illustration of how individuals are embedded in a system over which they have no control. Once you get on the plane, you must rely on the machine and the pilots.

@bewell4711 Yes, there’s something deeply changed in the heart of the Earth system, and it’s now becoming visible in ways we can measure (i.e. Antarctic sea ice extent). The change has already happened. We’re just waiting to feel the effects.

@EricTopol @CDCgov @CDCMMWR I am now seeing commercial ads from Pfizer for Paxlovid, online and on TV. They hype risk factors like asthma, diabetes, hypertension & overweight and refer people to , an unbranded site about "treatment options." This is the privatization of the pandemic.

@xr_cambridge It’s a story problem. Usually, people tell their own story within a greater story of the world — family, society, Nature, gods. Now, the larger story is dissolving, leaving people with no context for their own existence. Fucking terrifying!
