I’m not sure I’ll ever delete my Dad’s contact info from my phone. I know that doesn’t make a ton of sense. Anyone else feel this way after losing a loved one?
Fiona’s getting real. I heard a strange sound — a hum — and went out on our front verandah. Startled by this transformer explosion nearby. Happened about 3 minutes ago. 😳

Wow. We just made the last mortgage payment on our home. It took 18.5 years of hard work and consistency, through some very trying times. I’ve owned 3 homes, but this is the first time I’ve seen this on a mortgage statement. It’s a bit surreal. 😃😌
That’s a burnt spruce needle on my car’s sunroof. I’m in Bedford. The fire is 30 km away. Stating the obvious, but those strong winds are a big problem. Feeling awful for those evacuated. I dearly hope all are safe and sending strength to the firefighters.
Finished my skirt at 1:30 a.m. Went to the flag raising at Halifax City Hall at 10 with nitanis (my daughter, Ella). I am the granddaughter of a residential school survivor, the daughter of a day school survivor and I endured 2 day schools myself.

Hug your loved ones. You don’t know who needs it, right now. Yesterday, we lost my 17-yr-old niece, one of the most tender, sweet and loving souls I have known. Her name was Jewel. And she was.
Today I was honoured (and completely surprised) with a blanket ceremony down at the Halifax Waterfront. Delegates from NAIG 2014 (Regina) honoured me with a stunning star blanket, along with a complete set of medals from their games. I am so grateful. kinanâskomitin ❤️
Proud of my daughter. Last week at work, when a customer hissed at a colleague (a new Canadian), with a “you people, taking our jobs...” comment, my child, firmly said, “Hey, you can’t say that!” She summoned the manager, who escorted the person from the store.

A long time ago, I built a career in design. I woke up this a.m., trying to find words to describe how I feel today. I don’t have my old design tools, I’m rusty, but I still felt the need to create. I’m curious to know what you see.
@RCMPNS
I sincerely want to know (as do many others, clearly), why there’s no Amber Alert for this 14-year-old? I do not know the man she’s with, but he IS known to the community (and to you)—and her family is very worried about Mary (Molly). She is a CHILD. Please ramp this up.

My daughter was the one “with attitude” who stood up to that bullying, in the interests of protecting others and adhering to public health policy. I’m so proud she did.
Today I wear one of my ribbon skirts in honour of National Ribbon Skirt Day and young Isabella Kulak's courage. This is the one I chose for today because it best represents my spiritual connection to who I am as a nīhīthaw-iskwīw (Woodland Cree woman).

My friends just lost their sweet 26-year-old son to suicide. They’re living every parent’s nightmare—he was loved and this is devastating. 💔 Please, if you or someone you know needs help, call the NS Mental Health and Addictions Crisis Line 24/7 at 1-888-429-8167 or call 911.
I am overwhelmed by the sincere love and support from my firm today. My colleague, Sherry, created a

installation at our Halifax office on this National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S). ❤️
I’m starting to see some social media activity about September 30–mostly really good. However, I humbly offer some recommendations for folks posting about National Day For Truth and Reconciliation—and I do share these thoughts with love. 🧡
Almost finished a neckpiece to go with my new ribbon skirt (I call it “thunderbird soars in the northern lights”). My first time in about 40 years doing a loom beading project (with fringe). Regardless of how it turns out, beading is always good medicine.
I wear my red ribbon skirt in solidarity with our peoples impacted by race-based violence against Indigenous Women and Girls and 2LGBTQQIA+. Most Canadians are kind, but let this be a reminder that racism is still alive. Our journey of healing has only just begun.

Handsome house guest, Louie. He’d rather be at his own home I’m sure; but he’s making the best of things here for now, along with his lovely human. And we are happy to have them both, safe and sound. ❤️
Exciting personal news: I’ve accepted the role of Chair of the 2020 North American Indigenous Games, coming to Kjipuktuk (Halifax) & Millbrook First Nation July 12 - 19, 2020. 😃
I am so proud of our

team: weather-related challenges, focused on ensuring participants’ safety, working with officials to hold the remaining medal games today and making any adjustments needed as we go. Stay tuned to

I get that. I have one voicemail from my Dad from just over a year ago. I have it saved to a separate file so I don’t lose the sound of him saying. “Love you, sweetie.”

How I spent my NS Heritage Day evening: Made a new ribbon skirt (with fabric and ribbons from my mom) and a pair of cone-fringe beaded earrings. Colours represent: black=earth; blue=water; green=balance.
Someone said the other day (I think it was meant as a compliment…) that “it sure must be nice to get paid for running NAIG.” In case anyone’s wondering, I am a volunteer board director (and chair). NAIG Host Society board members do not get paid to be on the board. FYI. 😊
To the person not wearing a mask and shouting at my 19-year-old daughter, a food service worker, for doing the right thing by refusing to serve you: You looked like a fool in front of other customers and, very likely, the two children you had with you. I feel so sorry for them.
Started a ribbon skirt for tomorrow (an event late morning), but have an engagement tonight. Still have to finish stitching on the ribbons, sewing the pockets, seams, hem and waistband. Prayers welcome. 🧡
So this happened today.
COMPLETELY took me by surprise this morning. My mom (from MB) and my sis (from AB) were standing in my kitchen when I went downstairs after getting ready for work. NO idea.
It’s already the best birthday ever and it’s not for another 6 days! 😃😃😃
FYI, if you see me liking Tweets from any NDP, Liberal, PC, or Green Party candidates, it’s not necessarily an endorsement of any party’s policies. I support my friends and good acquaintances of all stripes whom I respect and admire, regardless of affiliation.
Surrounded by so much love, my step-dad, Fred Pertson, went to the spirit world today, peacefully, in his home in Fisher Bay at 1:57 p.m. CDT. One of the absolute best. ❤️❤️❤️
DO spend time considering how you can personally contribute to reconciliation, not just on September 30, but every day. 🤗
Let’s all do better. I know we can.

Grief is weird. Haven’t cried much at all since Dad died, even though I generally don’t hold in (or hide) my feelings very well. But when the airport security guy asked what was in a package, I told him “some of my dad’s remains.” He looked at me… and, suddenly, it’s all real.
I haven’t quite found the words to describe yesterday, the first official day of 2023 North American Indigenous Games.

Writing Dad’s obituary was both therapeutic and completely exhausting. Yes, it’s long, but he led an interesting life that crossed two countries, two provinces and one territory. My Pop deserves his story told. I hope I’ve done him justice. (To be published tomorrow.)
@WabKinew
Oh, bless his heart for trying. Based on experience, I think some non-Indigenous folks have heard “miigwech” used often and simply don’t realize there are, what, 60 other Indigenous languages in what is now known as Canada. Sigh. One of those teachable moments, I guess. 🙄
My friends, I have some happy news. I’m thrilled to share with you that I have accepted the position of National Advisor / kā-nīkānīt with Deloitte Indigenous, effective today.
@perrybellegarde
National Chief Bellegarde. I’m nehithaw-iskwew, living in Mi’kma’ki. I have been to the wharf to support our Mi’kmaq cousins. They need help and protection urgently. The RCMP are not stopping the threats, violence, and theft. This is URGENT. Can Canada please send peacekeepers?

In 6 days, we spent our nights sleeping next to the ocean, went on a spectacular bucket list kayaking trip to Three Sisters sea stacks, paddleboarded Horseshoe Bay at Cape d’Or, hiked Ward’s Falls Trail and Cape Chignecto. Beautiful Mi’kma’ki / Nova Scotia!
Kjipuktuk is ready for you, Turtle Island!
A special thank you to Elder Billy Joe for teaching our Culture Chair the traditional way for making the Mi'kmaq Wikuoms (Wigwams).
Re: this image. I’ve had people message me to ask if they can use/share it. Yes. it’s okay if anyone wants to share or use it. I give my permission to use for personal use or by any Indigenous non-profit, should they wish to use it. kinanâskomitinawaw
The North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) Council & NAIG Host Society are pleased to announce that the 10th Games are set to take place July 15 to 23, 2023 in Kjipuktuk (Halifax) & Millbrook First Nation, Nova Scotia.
This is truly a landmark deal: A coalition of Mi’kmaq First Nations to have 50% ownership of Clearwater and 100% of their Canadian licenses! This is a beautiful thing to see (or, ahem, to *sea*!). Congratulations to all!

Have a work event Saturday. Tonight, I had the idea to mess with a small evening bag I bought for a buck at a thrift shop in the summer. I repurposed an old piece of leather from my mom, made some fringe, and added my own beadwork. Nice to slow down and just create.
DON’T use phrases such as “our Indigenous people” or “Canada’s First Nations” or any combo thereof. Stay away from possessive language—it implies ownership. We do not belong to you. We live beside you and with you on this land, as equals.

While I appreciate seeing an all-female panel, for sure, I have to ask where are the BIPOC panelists? Surely in all the planning for this event, that must have at least come up in conversation. CBC, please reflect on this. It’s 2020 and it’s time. You can do better.
@jadcrnogorac
I wish my Dad was a texter. But he did record a lot of videos, capturing various stories from his life (and posted on FB). I have only watched one. But I’ll probably watch a bunch on his birthday (Dec. 31).
With Dad in Manitoba, caring for him during the final phase of his life journey; have been poring over old photos. Seeing these sweet ones of him in the ‘30s with his mum and dad, reminds me we were all little once. It’s good to reflect and appreciate the expanse of a life lived.
@CBCIndigenous
Honestly, how is it even possible that a person with such views could still be in the Senate at all. She hasn’t learned. It’s time she left.
A project I’ve been working on over my summer vacation. Haven’t beaded on a jean jacket, or any clothing, in decades; I learned/remembered a lot (and made many mistakes) while doing it.

Correction: We don’t have a travel ban here; however, one does have to self-isolate for 14 days if coming from outside Atlantic. So, you’re absolutely welcome to come if you’re willing to help keep us safe.
Whenever I travel now, I take COVID tests along. I tested twice in Vancouver (had a slight tickle in my throat on Tuesday). Negative result. Got home Friday morning and tested before hugging my family. Positive result. Now isolating, so I don’t make anyone sick. Major bummer.
This is huge. Lily Gladstone opened her acceptance speech in the Blackfeet language and all of us, including this nehithaw, rejoiced. takahki Lily (well done!). ❤️

Just had a convo with someone who lives and works here in Mi’kma’ki. She said she doesn’t know any Mi’kmaw words. I said, “Why not?” (Gently, and with a smile.) She went on Youtube immediately. And guess who now knows how to say “Kwe’” (hello)? It’s not hard, folks. Just try. 🙂
I’m taking the next three days to spend with my Mom, just the two of us, on a road trip to Unama’ki (aka: Cape Breton). She has never been there in the fall and I’m so excited to have her all to myself. 😃😃
My heart aches for my friends as they cope with the sudden, unimaginable loss of their beloved son. If you knew Joe, or if you know Leslie and Chris Keevill, I'm asking that we honour their wish to support mental health initiatives, such as this:
DO amplify Indigenous voices, add your comments, and share their posts (and please don’t make it about you, your shock, or your pain—September 30 is a time to listen, reflect on the legacy of residential schools, and consider how we can each do our part for a better future).
It's been a day since posting this and am SO overwhelmed by the response--so much sharing, and caring. I had nearly taken a 2-month Twitter break this fall, as I had started to doubt there was much kindness on this platform anymore. You beautiful people have erased that doubt.❤️

Home now, after 3 weeks away. Yep, it was pretty pricey overall, but we had been saving since 2019. Thanks to the pandemic, we missed taking our 2020 vacation and decided to keep on saving for our dream family trip to Scotland. Delayed gratification can be a very good thing. ❤️🏴

DYK: Many Indigenous veterans returned from war and lost their ‘status’ because they'd been off-reserve more than 4 yrs. They were essentially abandoned by Canada and their sacrifices forgotten. Having a day to honour them is the least we can do.
@Tim_Bousquet
It happened about 100 ft from my house. My husband took one of our quilts to keep the most injured person warm while the first responders were on their way. I saw one of the car occupants leave the car and collapse on the sidewalk. I’m hoping all are okay.
What an absolutely beautiful day in every way. I marched in the Halifax Pride parade with my Deloitte colleagues for the first time since 2019 (and my 5th time as a parade participant). Such joy!

All packed and ready to leave in the morning. Excited to be near my family (even though I’ll be quarantined, so we’ll still be apart for two whole weeks); but I can barely deal with leaving my mom. I love her so much. She is the best person I have ever, or will ever, know. ❤️
