It's infections in EXACTLY the same way. That means 1-2 days BEFORE the rash develops until the scabs crust over. You CAN give chickenpox to unvaccinated infants & children. It's particularly dangerous for developing foetuses before 28wks gestation.

@drkerrynphelps I'm a telehealth triage nurse. People reporting as covid + have sky-rocketed in the last 4-6 weeks. Calls are back to back well into the wee hrs EVERY day. Medical telehealth waits of 24hrs or more. It's chaos out there & none of it is being reported.😡

If having treatment in a PRIVATE HOSPITAL, Medicare pays 75% of the scheduled fee, your insurer the other 25% (you read that right - Medicare pays 75%). YOU pay the rest unless your insurer gives you "gap cover", but often they limit gap cover & you end up $1000s out of pocket.

So a new Item No. was created and the old one "retired". This process of reviewing item no's happens ALL THE TIME. it is a normal part of running Medicare and doesn't require the approval of parliament.

EVERYTHING, & I mean everything in our health system gets an item no. They're incredibly specific to the procedure. The average cost is calculated & set as what is known as the *Scheduled Fee*. This fee is used to calculate rebates from either Medicare or private insurers.

The Medicare item number for taking your appendix out under the "old" way included payment for an open abdomen operation taking several hrs, 5 days in hospital, etc. The "new" operation takes maybe 30min through a laprascope and 1 night in hospital. MUCH cheaper!

Basically, Medicare covers 85% of the scheduled fee and you cover the rest. If having treatment in a public hospital, the State accepts this as full payment. If you're "Bulk Billed" the provider accepts the 85% rebate as full payment (ie a GP or x-ray or blood test).

Changes to Medicare rebates can happen because: 1. An item number is retired & the new one pays a different amount; OR 2. The government makes a unilateral decision to change eligibility for who can access the rebate (eg rebates for knee MRIs for >50s) So why is the AMA unhappy?
