I’m a nurse and I just spent a 10 hour shift, without a break, on the receiving end of abuse and aggression from patients for telling them to wear a mask in line with the latest hospital directive. I feel like I’m going to cry.

Traumatic day. Was called to ED to cannulate a covid positive kidney transplant patient. There is no ICU beds available for her at the moment. She was told she will likely die. She was sobbing and struggling to breathe when I saw her.

I treat all my patients with the same level of care and respect, and it’s always an honour to comfort someone in their final moments. But there are certain ones, when they pass away, that hit that little bit harder for whatever reason. Today is one of those days.

After a gruelling couple of months of work - treating covid patients, long hours, extra shifts, postponed leave due to staff being furloughed - I am now on holidays for three weeks and I’m off to Tasmania this afternoon for the first time ever and I’m so excited!

2/2 They said they’d name it “Steph” because I was one of the first nurses to look after them on haemodialysis 4 and a half years ago and the last. It made me cry again because I thought it was so sweet. Instantly one of my happiest working memories, I just wanted to share.

Last night I was looking after one of our loveliest dialysis patients when they received the call they’d been allocated a transplant! I cried tears of happiness for them, and again when hugging them goodbye. Someone asked if they’re going to give their new kidney a nickname. 1/2
