ARCADIA 24 is here! This month's issue includes long-awaited dragon mounts, dozens of new potions & explosives, and a corrupt villain organization for your players to dismantle.
Posted this before but idk how to use twitter and it ate my post. Here's a process video for the rpg illustration. I usually start with tight line work, then I section everything out into easy to paint parts and clip the lines down to it. Cont->
I was inspired to paint something with the same rolling golden hills I saw on vacation when I visited Pinnacles national park and Yosemite.
10/10 would recommend Yosemite/ Pinnacles. Just driving there was like visiting another planet.
Been working on this forever and then got derailed by vacation but now its finally done! I saw a cool post about the pando aspen grove floating around tumblr and was inspired to do some art based on it.
Jason said I could post Flee Mortals! stuff now so I'm gonna do it!!!
This is Bloodlord Varrox had a blast noodling away on all the details. Couldn't have done it without the awesome concepts and sculpts Jason did though (Jason make a twitter so i can tag you).

A few more things from Arcadia magazine. They are old but I think they are still nice. Pretty sure I have an obsession with people in armor.

I made a thing! I didn't know you could get standees with custom art printed on them until i saw some other people on twitter do it. The transparency and the 3d aspect adds a lot to it.
Was working on this huge group illustration for the MCDM RPG for the past few weeks. Super excited to see how fast we funded! Thank you everybody for your support :D
She walked forward, looked down at the young man. “And I’ll be here long after you’re dead.” Her lean face was twisted into a feral grimace. “So go back to your parents.”

I do most of the rendering in grayscale to focus on values since I find it easier to separate getting the values correct from getting the colors right. I add in all the special effects and touch ups at the end in full color.
of course take this all with a grain of salt. What works for me may not work for you. Also working this way tends to be better for art with more neutral colors. I find it difficult to add texture /soften edges probably in part due to this process
@SHelmigh
Awesome thread!
Things I learned:
Don't try to paint every leaf on the tree or you will probably die trying. Some of my compositional issues were probably caused by a lack of depth and tiled floors really help with the depth problem.
“Something absorbed the psionic energy.”
“Yes,” Memory said. “I didn’t notice it at first, but upon repeat it became obvious. The talent flared bright and was then extinguished.”
The Sun looked at the Mirror. “Not a lot of things can do that.”

Thanks so much Wade! Glad you like my work. I had about a month to do this piece and Jason my art director put gave me direction on what characters to include. If you have more specific questions about anything you can email hello

He's a barbarian for a new dnd game I just started. The stuff on his arm is a scar that grows every time he rages. Other than that there's not much backstory since we just started playing.
@IStoczek
Sometimes I section things out by material (most of the time this is for armor, skin, and hair) sometimes its because I want to maintain a hard edge for important overlapping objects (the shadow's arm holding the knife).
@stkrivtsov
I used to work in full color as well it was just really difficult for me to juggle both the color and values at the same time and I ended up repainting things a lot.
@jmouro_art
not entirely sure if i understand your question but I do use a ton of adjustment layers/blend mode layers over the grayscale render. I mostly use a color blend mode layer to add color without effecting the values too much.
@markuserdtart
This is a two part standee with a base and 1 upright part. Wanted to keep it simple since this is the first time I've done anything like this.
