@Aranmanmy @johngreen Why can’t we fear doing harm to those around us? Why can’t we dread the natural, negative consequences of certain actions? Why must we be made to feel that one false move will cause the painful annihilation of our very self? The answer to your question is empathy not hell.

The hard thing is that many librarians will stand up, and then when they do we’ll be removed or chased out. Then who’s there for these kids? It’s a Catch-22. Teachers experiencing the same things.

@papagreennerd Mr. Green, my mom has always admired the way both your sons write the parents of their main characters. She loves how much they clearly love and take care of their kids, which you don’t often see in YA/NA books. I’m sure you are, in no small part, responsible for that ❤️

Calling it a School Librarian ‘shortage’ is an…interesting choice. So is suggesting the positions are going away because of technology when all the librarians *I* know are responsible for tech maintenance and pedagogy on top of everything else they do.

@eminwords This is 1000% sexual harassment and so deeply Islamaphobic it’s sickening. This would be everywhere and people would be sent OUT OF THEIR MIND by this if this woman were a white Christian refusing these instructions (on the basis of religious belief or not).

@HowtoADHD I don’t know if I have a cohesive mission statement, but I think it should be something along the lines of: “We’re working to make sure that, someday, neurodivergent kids don’t experience the kind of shame, negativity, and unhelpful ‘help’ that they do today.”

@Aranmanmy @johngreen If you think a majority of people are incapable of developing empathy then I don’t know what to say to convince you otherwise. That said, it’s clear from your other replies you are deeply prejudiced so I would suggest working on the empathy part yourself.

Children/school librarians know what a HUGE deal the Babysitters Club graphic novels are to our Gen Alpha babies. Today, my third graders discovered that Stacy was 13 years old!? They definitely thought these girls were either their age or upper teens because they were SHAKEN.

@dustychipura Ella from the book Ella Enchanted, and I could write a whole book about it. The curse she experiences is a perfect metaphor for being undiagnosed neurodivergent, and she breaks the curse by pushing through awful internal struggle to advocate for herself for the first time.

@eminwords The fact that this isn’t a massive story (and the fact that this kind of thing happens to Muslim women ON THE DAILY) says so much about the deep bigotry and sexism involved in REAL, contemporary violations of religious freedom. It makes me so mad.

It’s all part of a long game plan to chip away at any institutions that provide and protect free access to information. Once these institutions no longer exist, misinformation becomes exponentially more effective and dangerous. It’s simple, violent, and scary.

@kelseybogan I think not reading new books in the age range would make it really difficult to give effective, diverse reccs to my students. There was FAR less diversity in the cannon of books I read as a kid compared to what’s available now. That said? I think the work should be paid for.

I don’t know where the lie that book banning doesn’t harm a student’s access to books started, but it is a lie. Book banning and controversy might motivate certain children to read books or find them another way, but it has a chilling effect on kids without those resources.

For what it’s worth, The Last Duel exceeded ALL of my expectations, and I’m very comfortable attributing that fact to Nicole Holofcener and her work on the screenplay. A movie that could have been VERY misguided and male gaze-y was instead nuanced, gripping, and balanced.

Excellent thread. Also worth noting that the children who love a genre where they get to see at times flawed women grow, change, do admirable things and fall in love CAN HEAR YOU when you diminish the stories they love. Teach media literacy to your kids, not shame ❤️

Ariel’s dredged up stale shallow-feminist critiques about things fairy tale heroines did “for a man”. I just want to throw out there that the literary fairy tale genre was pioneered in the late 17th century by aristocratic women for whom demanding love in marriage was radical.

Here's what I don't understand about MG being ghosted right now: This is where readers are made. This is the magical age where kids inhale books like air. It all starts here, and if we stop caring about making readers young, eventually no-one will be left to read YA or adult.

I am just so…so angry that I live in an area where librarians are threatened into silence for doing their job. I don’t even have the words for this kind of anger, which I know is only lightly covering a deep fear for the safety of myself and others.

I love the librarians in my area so much, and I am so tired of them being asked very basic questions with very basic answers that then make headline news. Exhibit 918393938:

Very happy for Encanto, which I absolutely adore, but I absolutely feel the movie Flee deserved best animated feature. Please, PLEASE, go see it if you can, it’s so important especially now.

Something joyous and beautiful for your timeline. So happy for @KarunaRiazi and for us, because we get to know and love her/her work.
