is archive of 239 women in Ireland, victims of femicide. Killed because they’re women. Cause of death: Existing while female. This is what literal violence *actually* looks like. Good work by

@Womens_Aid
Any historians on here able to explain this? Julia Grenan’s details were gradually (shamefully) fading off her joint headstone with Elizabeth Farrell. Now she’s been totally wiped off, relegated to an ornament, & no reference to their relationship. Farrell was infamously wiped…
🚨 Positive news. The bikes will revert back to their original numeric identifiers. I did suggest this to them in an email on Thursday, when I complained about ALL female names, but was told it wasn't possible. Thank you Twitterati.

Mindboggling that this isn't on every front page. Irish deaths over Dec-Jan period just gone are *40%* higher than same period, pre-COVID. No room in mortuaries. Government can spin the 'dying from/with Covid', but can't spin huge increase in total deaths.
I can honestly say - as a feminist rarely short of a view on things - this was a struggle. And as for the design of the actual ballots, it couldn’t be less clear. What a mess from start to finish.

Private school with a 5:1 pupil teacher ratio, in urban location, great connectivity, parents with even better ‘connections’. How does this help the average family or typical school? 🤷♀️

They've decided to revert to ID numbers for bikes. This is what I suggested when I emailed on Thursday to complain that naming all bikes as women was inappropriate. Wasn't possible then, but now it is, apparently.
If you weren’t around in the 1980s, it’s hard to comprehend the horrors of the

This is being swept under the carpet. Human error in coding is being waved about as a distractor from a deliberate decision to continue w/ 2nd round offers, KNOWING there were problems. The latter is a bigger scandal, and shameful.
#LeavingCert2020
It’s breathtaking that the Minister and her Department became aware of fundamental problems with the grading for state exams and yet proceeded to issue second round offers AFTER knowing this.
That’s just unacceptable and a massive breach of the rights of children affected
An article of interest to many Irish teachers, I suspect.

Am I the only one who thinks it is NOT a good thing when *every* student in a school goes to 3rd level? Surely there are square pegs for whom the round hole of 3rd level is a bad fit? How many drop out or are miserable?

Want to illustrate how, in the wrong hands, homeschooling can go horribly wrong? I give you Enoch Burke & family. Guards called, thanks to their collective obnoxiousness.
Gardaí have been called to a meeting of the board of Wilson’s Hospital School where it was due to consider the case of suspended teacher Enoch Burke.
Officers were called after members of the Burke family shouted objections to the meeting going ahead. More

Since some don’t ‘get’ what’s wrong with hysteria & NWCI endorsing its use. The word has a long & unpleasant history. Apart from the dafter origins, it was used as a psychiatric diagnosis for women, usually those who chafed against societal norms, or did things men didn’t like..

I’ve huge sympathy for the staff & BoM, as well as parents. With 3 days to midterm & huge numbers of cases related to the school, the DE decision defies logic. It’s just posturing.
@emma_okelly
I'd be concerned if that was the breadth of the spectrum. The function of education is not just to produce identical little economic units. OECD and IBEC have a role in reform, but I hope it wasn't a leading role.
Not to detract from the importance of

Nice, short overview of single-sex school provision, by country. Ireland (second level) sits in a cluster of mainly Middle Eastern countries. Worth reflecting on. Also worth looking at the reasons behind the Maltese move to co-ed.

No. She died later so was the second name on the headstone. Removing her name and their relationship doesn’t honour their memory. Plus, it’s a fecky little ornament, not a proper memorial.
The 1983 protests after Declan Flynn’s murder were the foundation of Ireland’s gay rights movement. It changed everything. It is absolutely unacceptable to doctor images of such an important event.

Panic seeing Carly Simon trending, but thankfully only the 50th anniversary of the wonderful “You’re so vain”. For all the DJs struggling with Mondegreens, this is the line that describes so much so well: “One eye on the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte”. Listen and learn.
@SuzieKingon
True. But accepting that families were fully responsible for all care as a quid pro quo for removing the “women in the home” clause was a bridge too far. Incredibly frustrating to be forced to choose between sexism or ableism.

Hysterics were vilified, ‘treated’ against their will, sometimes sexually assaulted. It was a female-only diagnosis used to shut up women. It’s beyond shameful that NWCI cheerlead it’s use. A quick intro here:
Anyone know about the ‘international’ committee advising on
#LeavingCert
calculated grades? Don’t recall anyone outside of Ireland on the list? Also, on Aug 17, Norma Foley said gender was part of the calculation but on
#rtept
tonight said it’s ‘gender-blind’. Confused...
One final slide from
#PISA
launch. Some large gender gaps now in Ireland and definite
#DEIS
gap remaining. And the gap likely to be underestimated.

@Womens_Aid
A very brave woman. It’s ‘unfortunate’ the judge felt it was fine that the courtroom was jammed for proceedings yesterday. Apart from adding to her stress, she’s severely immuno-compromised. A bit of consideration after all she’s been through wouldn’t have been unreasonable.
Since I hear Andreas Schleicher is yet again on Irish media... Cautionary, witty blog on OECDifucation of education: Should we eat more fish or ice cream to boost Pisa scores?
Research that every teenager will embrace! Delayed secondary school start times lead to hefty academic & other benefits. An hour delay is apparently as good as reducing class size by a third. Let the arguments begin 😉
