Just so we're clear, I'm not a comedian, just a smartass lawyer. I work in cannabis compliance by day & public health law by night. I specialize in gun law/gun violence. If you want to peruse my non-RATM related work, here you go:
The people angrily denouncing Rage Against the Machine for Tom Morello's leftist politics is one of the more hilarious things I have ever seen on the internet. WHAT MACHINE DID YOU THINK THEY HAVE BEEN RAGING AGAINST FOR DECADES? THE ICE CREAM MACHINE? THE ATM? LAWNMOWERS?
I mean, the lyrics to their (probably?) best-known song are literally SOME OF THOSE WHO WORK FORCES ARE THE SAME THAT BURNED CROSSES. That's not even symbolism. That's just straight up talking in plain language.
Is it rude to say "please no gifts" on a party invitation?? We eloped and are having a party. We do not want or need gifts. My mother insists that saying "please no gifts!" on the invite is rude. I think saying nothing will make people feel like a gift is expected. Help.
I'm an expert in gun law, gun violence, and the Second Amendment. I literally created and teach a college class called "Firearms Law and the Second Amendment." I've read the studies, articles, and books. I've written and published my own articles. If you have questions... AMA.
@ditikohli_
I'm still grateful for the couple on the D line years ago who physically put themselves between me and my harasser and offered to get off with me at the next stop.
Welp, this tweet has now been seen by over 1 million people, which is more people than have ever even glanced at anything else I've ever written, times, like, 25,000.
I have a HARVARD DEGREE in Health Policy AND I am a lawyer. Yet I have struggled mightily to navigate the sys & advocate for myself. I am SO PRIVILEGED & I still ended up sobbing in a hospital lobby last month because of insurance issues and a cash demand for access to my docs.
@Joe_Roberts01
When I was a public defender, I would RAGE whenever I got a case involving stolen formula. The prosecutor would always say, "They're not feeding a baby, they're reselling it on the street." Not once did they seem to get that a black market for baby formula is still FEEDING A BABY
@ConnConnection
One of the most significant ones is access to a gun. Domestic violence fatalities skyrocket when there is a gun in the home, as do deaths by suicide. Suicide is not usually what people think of in terms of gun violence, but it account for about 2/3 of gun deaths in US every year
@NJerseyResident
@Christi06562109
@dietz_meredith
I remember this too. I was 21. People in NYC were having a lot of sex because it was a) escapism from the horrific trauma we had all endured, and b) an immediate way to express "we're all gonna die, let's have some fun."
@ConnConnection
Another factor is the strength of gun laws in a particular state. States with stronger/stricter gun laws have lower rates of gun deaths than states with more permissive laws.
@ConnConnection
I should clarify that I'm a public health person, not a psychologist, etc., so I look more at broader risk factors v. Individual risk factors. But on an individual level, the single most significant predictor of future violence is a history of violence.
@FreeWheelinMe
Excellent question. The reality is that people with mental illness are much more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators of it. I think this is a particularly good resource -
Oh, hey. Thanks for liking my Rage Against the Machine Tweet. I write about gun law/gun violence and public health law. Welcome. Black Lives Matter Black Lives Matter Black Lives Matter Black Lives Matter Black Lives Matter Black Lives Matter Black Lives Matter Black Lives Matter

The USPS has turned down a federal judge's order to sweep mail processing facilities serving 15 states, saying it would stick to its own inspection schedule.
The order came after the agency disclosed that more than 300,000 ballots could not be traced.
@MikeStucka
@MaryRobinette
This is a really good question. First and foremost, the access to guns is one of the most significant risk factors that gun deaths have in common. The mere existence of guns in the home increases suicides, homicides, and accidental deaths. The next level would be storage...
Don't eat indoors! Even though we're keeping indoor dining open! Don't do it! But you are allowed to! But don't! But we're still gonna make service workers show up in high risk situations in case you feel like going! But don't go!
Cool, cool, cool, Massachusetts.
This isn't even a question of whether or not indoor dining SHOULD be open. It's just that Baker is telling people to not spend time in indoor spaces, but he's keeping indoor dining open.
HIS contradiction is what's causing the disagreement between friends that he shared.
I took the bar. I passed the bar. I don't think I'm a better lawyer than I would have been if I hadn't taken the bar. If anything, it taught me how to function at constant levels of near-panic anxiety for 2.5 months & I don't think that's good for anyone.

@TheSpoonieWitch
In the mid-90s, the CDC provided funding for gun violence research. One prominent article that came out showed (unsurprisingly) that more guns=more gun violence. The NRA led a campaign saying the government was promoting gun control. So in 1996, Sen Dickey from AR added a line...
I am taking a break for a while! I will get to every question that I haven't addressed already, but I need to step away from Twitter for a bit. Bear with me.

... private sales have to go through the same background check (NICS) that dealers do in order to conduct a sale. The House passed a bill that would do this a few months ago, but the Senate will not even bring it to a vote. None of these would be a panacea, clearly, but when...
This is an astonishing statistic. Traffic down by half but motor vehicle fatalities DOUBLED. Anecdotally, I went on 90/93 yesterday for the first time in March and found people driving absurdly fast, far beyond normal terrible Massachusetts driving.
@MikeStucka
@MaryRobinette
...ACCESS is so crucial, looking at how to regulate access better would go a long way (I think) to reduce gun deaths in all forms.
I GUESS IT'S A GOOD THING SHE WASN'T ELECTED GOVERNOR OF BOSTON THEN. She's gonna be governor. Of the whole state. WHO CARES IF SHE LIVES IN CAMBRIDGE INSTEAD OF BOSTON. There are just... so many things going on and this was the last straw of annoyance for me.
This is very kind, absolutely. But it also highlights that: working people live in shelters; $300 is a potentially life-changing amount of money; tipping as a business model is bullshit. These are all systemic issues. NO ONE should have to rely on the kindness of strangers.
@windblownsong
If people who claim this cite sources, they will invariably cite John Lott and his book "More Guns, Less Crime." But the methodology used in that book (and in his other work) is very shoddy - . Plus, we have TONS of data showing that...

... that it only lasted for 10 years. There were issues with definitions, grandfathering in existing weapons, determining what was and wasn't covered, etc. Two states (Mass and California) continued the ban on the state level. And it has thus far been held up in the lower courts
@KRDemCT
So the NRA doesn't set certification standards, but it does dominate the way that people get those certifications. For example, in Massachusetts, statute dictates that in order to get a gun license, you have to take a gun safety course. It also lists what must be in that course..
@MikeStucka

Political aspects aren't prohibited from these classes, so it is up to individual instructors/organizations to include that aspect. And many do encourage membership in the NRA and engage in rhetoric. Theres a study I helped with a few years ago that sent people to...

I was dying at that. "Oh, peanut butter and berries? That is really unusual. Anyway, make a vertical tart (??!!) which essentially requires a fine art degree and make it fucking perfect using only the directions 'make it.'"
I'm about to get a little personal here. One year ago, I started experiencing relentless upper belly pain and vomiting. Dr. Google thought it might be gall stones, so I went to urgent care. Urgent care turned around and told me to go straight to the ER. So I did. 1/

I haven't officially signed the offer letter yet, but I am accepting a job as policy counsel at a major anti-gun violence organization, hours after another mass shooting. It is my dream to do this work. And I am going to keep doing it.
Just peeking in to say I'm getting married! Between my new job doing anti-gun-violence policy full time and this, 2023 has proven to have some rays of goodness.
@FreeWheelinMe
Essentially, in the overall scheme of things, mass shootings represent a small percentage of gun homicides and, while there is some data that suggests mass shooters are more likely to have a serious mental illness compared to the general population, the violence they perpetrate..
A dude once insisted that I couldn't be an expert in gun violence because he didn't believe that two-thirds of gun deaths are suicides. He just DIDN'T BELIEVE IT WAS TRUE. He didn't care that it was a statistic that took 10 seconds to look up, so I didn't care that I just left.

I don't disagree with this tweet. But I want to emphasize that the injustice here isn't that rich people don't get ENOUGH time in jail, it's that non-rich people get WAY TOO MUCH time. The goal is to get fewer people incarcerated at all, not more people incarcerated for longer.
Lori Laughlin was just sentenced to 2 months in jail.
Earlier this year, the Manhattan DA recommended one year jail for a man who stole cough syrup and toothpaste from a Duane Reade.
There are two systems of justice in this county and this is yet another example.
So! I got laid off this morning. It was a shock and I'm very sad about it. But if anyone would like to employ a cannabis law, policy, and compliance expert with 17 years experience as a lawyer, let me know!
I sometimes feel obligated to respond to, say, a high school acquaintance on Facebook who posts covid "hoax" propaganda. I think if she sees the real facts and data, she will know better! But of course she won't. Smashing that Unfriend button is much more cathartic.
But I'm not. I won't be. I don't know if I will ever get over the shame or if I will just learn to live with it. Talking this openly is a start. So here I am. 14/The End

... in the coming term () that will likely result in an expansion of the Second Amendment to carrying firearms outside the home. But does the Second Amendment CURRENTLY prohibit an "assault weapons ban" under existing jurisprudence? I don't think so.
It has been a tough week for the Allston-Brighton neighborhoods. A car killed a pedestrian outside St. E's. A devastating fire destroyed a building housing music studios and other businesses. A driver who ran a red light killed another driver at Western Ave. Very tough week.
Please stop saying "we will get through this" or "we will survive." I know the intent is good, but it's simply not true. More people will die, more people will have their lives torn apart, more people will struggle in the face a system that actively hates them. Please stop.
