Unused matte painting from Maleficent intended to show a passage of time from summer to winter. There would have been a leaf blowing effect to transition between them. I was happy with the classic style of composition-an homage to the wide castle shots from Sleeping Beauty.⁠

Avatar: TWOW- Metkayina Village Early Concept Art This was an early painting from 2014 to figure out the feel of Metkayina village. A lot of the specifics changed, but the overall vibe and form language was intact. You can also see a very early ilu design with a different head.

Thornwall from Maleficent- Matte painting/VFX art direction. I did a 2.5D approach for the wall. I created a few 2D thorn branch cards, and then arranged them in 3D space in Cinema 4D. ⁠You can see a render here. I then added lighting, integration, and detailing.

The idea is the sea wall is made of something like a rapidly calcifying plankton that acretes and creates these shapes over time as the waves crash against it. The wall is porous with tunnels that create nutrient rich upwellings nourishing the reef and creating terraced pools.⁠
