#RogueOne
was released- an amazing and challenging movie to work on, the final result was better than I had ever hoped- remembering hearing John Knoll's earliest ideas, Edwards and Chiangs endless design insights, the emotion of the first screening with an audience-
I remember doing this piece like it was yesterday- middle of the night, presentation at 9am, 1 layer Corel Painter Square Chalk and Water Rake brushes, Doug Chiang's iconic LAAT ship design which looks awesome from every angle...

changed Star Wars forever- here's some of my first season design illustrations, we were 😳😳😱😱😍😍 that JF decided to incorporate real concept art (not done after the fact) into the credits, not something you see very often at all...

Here's my first approved rough sketch and a detail/color pass I did over ILM Modeler John Goodson's maquette for this ship- you can see that Lucas shortened the tail of this ship between the sketch and the maquette-

I did this piece very early in Rogue One preproduction- Gareth and Doug said we'd be going back to Mustafar and to explore some ideas of what that could look like- this idea was that Vader would meditate in a rock chamber that would evoke the one we see in Empire...
Here's my original concept sketch for this sequence- George's design brief was 'Coruscant Opera'- my first pass was very traditional but on a grand scale, he liked this zero-g water ballet idea much more- he sent me to Las Vegas to see 'O' for inspiration for the VFX shots!

#StarWars
Rogue One pretty far along the U-Wing design process, this one is very '1977', the final design feels more like the even earlier, smoother McQuarrie Y-and X-wing designs in his paintings, before the model ship added many greeblies...

Love seeing this- starting with Chiang's sleek Delta Jedi Fighter, here are a few of many quick sketches to play with the idea of a ship that is between that and a TIE- lots of talk and ideas, none right until Lucas had this idea in a meeting and sketched it out-
June 11, 2002: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: George Lucas drew over Church’s , Jedi starfighter concept to make it look more like a TIE fighter, which signals the design evolution from the Republic to the Empire.

...one of my favorite planets for sure, I can't believe Lucas was interested in the idea, it didn't feel 'Star Wars' to me but very glad that it did to him- here's an incredible study model made by the ILM model shop to get photoreal reference for something that didn't exist-
July 6, 2004: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: In Ryan Church’s art for the seaweed/coral environment of Felucia the concept was that it was an underwater planet without water.

Jedi Fighter Development- George wanted something that would directly evolve in between Doug Chiang's Jedi Fighter and the Tie Fighter that we all know- that's John Goodson's incredible sketch model-

The first thing George did for this assignment was plop this toy down on the desk- it's Doug Chiang's Jedi Starfighter from Episode 2- George wanted this to be the starting point and to add some Tie Fighter wings and armament that revealed themselves to tell the story...
