STAVE ONE.
MARLEY’S GHOST.
Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it: and Scrooge’s name was good upon ’Change,
My MS lost its library, shares the HS lib. Ss place holds & I ferry books from the HS lib. I usually check out 1-3 books/day.
Wanted kids to have books for long wknd, so I did a "pop-up library" in the hall niche that used to be the lib entry.
Checked out 66 books in one day!

There's a bit of a similar thread in SUPERMAN SMASHES THE KLAN graphic novel by
@geneluenyang
(based on the 1940s Superman radio program) - racists call him an alien interloper when Superman doesn't let the racists continue & keeps non-white people from harm.
Absolutley fascinating thread!
(I was today years old when I learned about phytotoxicity, where the fresh juice of plants like celery and carrot, combined with sunlight, can cause serious and permanent skin damage.)
We often get asked why we cover our skin even in hot weather. Why do we need long pants, long sleeves and head/face coverings in 100+ weather?
Reason one: health experts advise anyone to dress in light layers to keep cool when working in the sun. (1/thread)

Setting up a school library is like planting a garden. It takes years for everything to blossom, for the empty spaces to fill with beauty, for the roots to take hold, for the life to spread out, for the vitality to make itself apparent.
Use "DEVELOPMENTALLY RELEVANT" rather than "age appropriate" when discussing whether a book should be available to students.
Every student has different life experiences, matures at a different rate, has their own informational needs - none of these are bound by age.

Kid came to virtual office hours just to talk about books and chat. I had a ton of stuff to do, felt anxious, but told myself to let it go; talked for 20 mins. He said, "You're so enthusiastic about literacy - I really like this class!"
Man, did I need that moment today.
😊😢😭
Merry Christmas to me! My VP (hopefully soon to be my P) just told me that I can officially have part of an infrequnelty used, centrally located room for a Middle School Library!
I try not to take myself too seriously, but I take education very seriously.
I spent 18 months lobbying for restoration of the school librarian position at my school because I truly think the library is the cure for what ails education.
Receipts:
Heading out for my first day of school! (As a school librarian!)
(Figured I'd try to keep at least one pic consistent with my original first day photos. 😁)
Check out this awesome book easel my contractor wife whipped up from some scrap plywood she had left over! Can't wait to get some of these to display the library’s wares!
@kelseybogan
Not quiet thing: Since my middle schoolers haven't been able to visit the library, I've been hand-delivering their holds.
Quiet thing: The past year or so, I've been wrapping them in "privacy covers" so no one knows what they're getting unless the student wants to share.
Hey
@abmack33
, have you read BAN THIS BOOK by Alan Gratz? It's about a 4th grader who finds out from her school librarian, Mrs. Jones, that a parent has gotten the school board to remove books, despite Mrs. Jones' protestations.
I'm am truly FURIOUS to hear a group saying a picture book is "pornographic" because it's designed with labelled, illustrated anatomical images with the expressed educational purpose of helping parents teach kids about their bodies.
@juliaerin80
My experience w/ hybrid instruction has been that I'm working twice as hard for less than half the results I feel like I could get if we were just virtual. Never enough time to prep or plan, and can't get close to in person students (or see half their faces). Worst of all worlds.
Just saw TWO emails from my district about students exposed to COVID-19. One being monitored, one confirmed infected. 2 dif sports teams. Both teams possibly exposed.
WE'RE NOT EVEN IN SCHOOL YET.
But let's reopen school buildings!

There's a tattoo convention in the same building as

Lots of libs are getting inked.
One was saying she had to go to 3 different inkers b4 one would agree to do her stack of books tattoo b/c it was in rainbow colors - she was told it's "too controversial". 1/
I learned about layers and custom animations in

Venting to my therapist about work amd library-world related stresses, and she says I should step away from that stuff and physically go somewhere that gives me joy.
Therapist: Where might that be?
Me: *automatically* The library.
We laughed, but the lib IS my Happy Place.
@MissNikkiIn5th
I honestly have trouble picking just 1 thing - there are SO MANY issues going on in education that are making things more difficult than they need to be. Standardized tests. Lack of funding. Lack of respect. Lack of educator voices in policy making. Lack of safety.
It's really wonderful to hear superintendent
@MikeDaria
discuss how his district changed their approach to reading by saying, "We're going to get kids excited about reading by getting them books that they want to read, & getting out of their way", updating school lib collections.
OK, need help confirming what I believe might be a Universal Truth.
True or False:
No matter how large a kitchen, if more than one person is working in it, that person will always be exactly in the place where someone else needs to be.
For DECADES, I acted like I was vital to my workplace. Took 0 sick days, 0 personal days. When the layers above me turned over for the 5th time & no one knew the years of work I'd put in, I realized that if I wasn't there, I was probably the only one who would notice. Live life.
Take that lunch break. Take that PTO. Take off on your birthday or because it’s 85 degrees on a Friday. Take that vacation. Take sabbatical. Start that business. Take that parental leave. Leave early for happy hour. Because in the end your employer will “go on as planned.”

Yes, yes, a million times yes! Putting books in a classroom is NOT the same as having a school library. Giving some kids access to titles is not =. Classroom teachers rarely have time, training in, or space for face-out displays. School libs are where it should be at!
OK,

1) What games, items, activities, etc., should I be looking into for the "creativity space" (trying to move away from "maker space") that is currently empty? Currently thinking board games (suggestions?), Lego, keva planks...
I read The Wild Robot and didn't become a robot. I read all 19 of the Dresden Files books and (sadly) didn't become a wizard PI. I ready Boy Meets Boy and didn't become gay.
But I did become more empathetic. Books open up new worlds & offer new perspectives. Pass it on.

Why insist on a "Certified" school librarian?
Same reason we insist on certified school nurses, counselors, administrators.
Certification means the person has special skills & knowledge to perform that job.
SLs are WAY more than book slingers!
You don't want to listen to my decades of experience re: f2f VS remote teaching? Dumb, but not unexpected. But I'm straight-up offended that you're requiring me to be in the bldg after hybrid teaching to do remote office hours - implying I will only do my job from my classroom.
Just wrote & sent 5 emails asking the Kent School District in WA to uphold their own published policies, rather than letting a principal unilaterally decide to remove the LGBTQ+ books from the school library. Took about 30 mins to find the email addresses & write the letters.

Well, I wasn't ready quite yet, but someone grabbed a puzzle put of the cupboard and the HS kids descended like puzzle-flies on a puddle of puzzle-honey!
If I scream about the rat problem in all school libraries, and claim that the librarians are purposely bringing rats into schools, its understandable that ppl would be upset. Esp if I take the library's hamster and only show close-up pics of its beady eyes and sharp teeth.
Well, that's a wrap on Dr. T the classroom teacher! Desk is cleaned out and re-occupied, and other than a few last projects to grade, I'm ready to turn my attention to bringing great materials & services to all my MS colleagues & students!

If you want to know someone's regular heart rate, do you take their pulse while they are running for their lives?
Then why would we test kids in the middle of a pandemic and think those results are valid in any way?
Spent a while the past few days making sure all the fiction shelves had some face-out stands. Pretty pleased with how it all came out - every shelf & the top of every case has covers on display!
If only there were educators who received specific training in identifying sources, citation, and teaching those skills to others!

Teachers are interested in research. But, teachers “struggle to identify sources of quality research and how to translate research to inform their teaching.”
One of the most consequential issues in K–12 education.
Studies show that young people who have more, & more accurate, info about sexual health are less likely to end up victims of sexual assault or sexual violence.
Calls to remove information about sexuality & sexual health from collections actually increase the risks to students.
Had a real gut-check yesterday.
Realized that with all the insanity around librarians, if I get elected to AASL's Board of Directors, my name would be near the top of the list of an organization haters are likely to go after.

Answer: They can't. One of the first lessons in teacher prep courses is on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, a psychological theory that posits that humans need their base needs met before they're able to focus on higher needs. Kids/humans that are uncomfortable learn less, if at all.
Psst!
Tell your school librarian friends: The party is moving to a better place, and generous donors have provided plenty of invites!

@ShawnaCoppola
Problematic, as is the fact that lots of the folks making these decisions - for schools, communities, and businesses - are able to continue to work remotely and/or have positions that are isolated from regular public contact.
NPR | There are efforts to change how decisions are made about which books libraries should stock and which section they belong in. Some advocate using a national rating system like the one used for movies.
If those folks look at educational-focused scientifically-accurate, clearly-labelled drawings of naked kids and ACTUALLY think they're pornographic, they're the ones who are finding it sexually stimulating, and they need to be restricted from coming within 500 feet of a school.

This is a point that I think most folks don't get - Teachers, admins, etc. School libraries are not (or should not be) a room full of books. They are dynamic spaces that address multiple learning needs, formal and informal, staffed by an information professional.

Then there's the food security story: John Deere is an agribusiness monopolist that outraged farmers by claiming that they didn't own the tractors they paid six figures for, merely "licensed" them on terms that forbade them from fixing their own machines.
