I’m having surgery in a few weeks that will almost certainly end my chances to carry a child. I chose this because I’m no longer able to tolerate the symptoms of chronic #endometriosis . I don’t regret my academic career, but I think I’ll always wonder what might have been.

Reminder: 1 in 5 people experience mental illness each year. Rates are even higher in academia. Some of the most brilliant, productive, “happy” people you know live with an invisible illness. Listen. Reach out. Be kind. @OpenAcademics @AcademicChatter #AcademicMentalHealth

One of the hardest things about living with multiple chronic health conditions is that many are not visible! I often appear “well” and manage to work long hours in a full-time position, but the pain and fatigue are constant. Some kindness and understanding from colleagues and

The Handbook of #AcademicMentalHealth is almost done! We really hope it will inspire change: “The work environment in many universities today is toxic, exploitative and dehumanizing. Leaders must stop prioritizing profits and productivity over student and staff well-being.”

What are biggest issues facing PhD students today? Lack of financial support? Imposter syndrome? Poor work-life balance? Overwork? I’m developing a series of mental health tips and reminders and want to make sure I’m capturing everyone’s experiences 🙏🏻 @ThePhDPlace @PhDVoice

So… I’ve been asked to develop an online program for PhD students to support mental *and* physical health. It looks like it will be fully funded too. 😭🙏🏻 @OpenAcademics @AcademicChatter #AcademicMentalHealth

Pleased to find out today that the University of Queensland is increasing the stipend for PhD students. Institutions that value their students make sure they have adequate financial support. Thank you everyone who advocated for this. ❤️🙌🏻 @UQ_News #AcademicMentalHealth

I believe those of us with privilege - especially tenure and job security - have a responsibility to say “no” when told to work unreasonable hours and risk our health and well-being. Change will happen slowly, but small moments of resistance add up over time. (3/3)

One of the best lessons I learnt during the last year is that the world won’t end if I don’t finish my “to do” list each day. Also, I do much better work when I am rested and focused. The task can wait. Put your well-being first. #AcademicMentalHealth @AcademicChatter

I tried to explain the concept of peer review to non-academic friends recently and they were astonished: “So publishers make MILLIONS of dollars every year… but you aren’t paid a cent for reviewing papers?” “Nope.” “So you’re just doing HOURS of unpaid work?” “Yes.”
