Your reminder that muscles, nerves and bones you use to hear, talk, and chew with correspond to gill structures in fish. An idea derived from fossils, comparative anatomy, embryology and DNA. Art by

Fish thought of the day: many of the bones you use to talk, chew and hear with are modified gill bones of sharks and fish. This is a fact of development, genetics, and the fossil record. art by

David Wake, who passed away today, was a scientific icon but also a warm and kind human. He was my postdoc mentor at Berkeley and my life is vastly richer for having known him. My thoughts are with Marvalee and Tom.

“The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.” Bertrand Russell.
I ran into my own 6-year old footprints on Ellesmere Island in 2008. I walked this spot in 2002 cold, wet, and questioning my judgement about looking for a fishapod in this place. What a fragile and special part of our world!
New, more complete, reconstruction of Tiktaalik by

! We now include the pelvic fins, vertebral column and many other parts that were only recently revealed by scanning. Stay tuned.

Resting in Resolute Bay after pulled from the field on Ellesmere Island. Major Arctic storm leveled camp. Plane found patch of tundra to land and take us after a week of eating bars in sleeping bags during bad weather. But truly amazing Devonian fossils! More to come…
Your Inner Anemone. Versions of the same genes are involved in building human and sea anemone bodies. But they’re better than us. They can regenerate lost body parts. We can’t. Art by
