Many of @TaniguchiMD ’s trainees partake in academic tweeting because he made us sit through a 30min presentation full of GIFs that explained the benefits of having an academic account and then watched as we created them before we could leave on a Friday afternoon. (1/n)

Today we all met for labsgiving, as he had planned, @colbertle ’s house. apart from the expected grief there was science being dreamt up out loud. He would’ve been in awe of how he set us up to be able to support each others’ next steps. The kids will be ok, he made sure we would.

I still have too few words to express the heartbreak, but also need too many words to capture what @taniguchiMD was to us. He was a scientist’s scientist and a doctor’s doctor - simply the best. So instead, a tweetorial of things I learned from him over the last 8 years:

@CallMeRichier At a meeting recently I met a PI that told me how she wore a red dress to her residency interview and was judged for it even years down the road. She was very inspiring and told me it was my choice as to how I presented myself. I chose to defended my thesis in a red dress.

I don’t know how to do the physician scientist thing (life? career?) without him but I will do my best to honor his memory. My heart hurts infinitely today but it also grateful that I was one of the lucky ones that got to know and learn from him.

@tmprowell @dave__whiteside Agreed! first 24h all I was able to do was breastfeed/pump and lay there. Having my partner take on every baby responsibility (other than feeding) those first few days was essential for my health.

It seems my PhD work on #fasting is getting even more exciting between the ⁦ @NEJM ⁩ review earlier this week and now ⁦ @theNCI ⁩’s provocative questions! Any #Pediatrics residencies want to take a chance on working together to study fasting? Excited for what 2020 brings

I started my first vacation during residency last night, and I was terrified of going on vacation. I was incredibly sad because I can’t visit my family, and frustrated that although I have 9 days off I can’t do any of the trips I had to cancel due to COVID. 1/3

Being a mom has helped me level up as a pediatrician…I thought my baby’s ears smelled weird and turns out I can now diagnose otitis with my sense of smell!

#BlackintheIvory is being excited about finally being a real doctor and having the nursing staff on your first rotation in surgical residency rename you “Jane” because your name’s too difficult and no one wants to deal with it.

If as a program you want publications PROTECTED MENTORED RESEARCH TIME WITH A FORMAL CURRICULUM ON DATA ANALYSIS/SCIENTIFIC WRITING IS ESSENTIAL. And if you want really sensational products I’d add having statistical analysis and editorial services handy for trainees.

Conference abstracts accepted, but no publications?  It's a common story for residency research projects. As someone who'd experienced it 6 times... these are the reasons why many residency projects go NOWHERE.  Brace yourself, because it's time for some tough love.

Coming from one of those four schools already brings stress and pressure to prove ourselves during the interview trail. Don’t be the reason your applicant feels they don’t belong. Look for PR in a map, know our schools are accredited... or risk losing a hardworking team player.

I was very jealous of the straight clinician ICU fellow who verbalized not being interested in a research career and was still enthusiastically encouraged to seize the opportunity. Why are we getting different messages? Why do they get to be hopeful and I hopeless? (3/3)

Decided to read a bit about the state of pediatric cancer research when I stumbled upon ⁦ @theNCI ⁩ encouraging me to follow my science. It seems there may be space for a #Radiation biologist to grow within the realm of #PediatricOncology !
