Why do you need a master's or PhD?
WHY?
Let's digest the feedback from an "excellent application" that was rejected.

Please tell your mamas and papas as well. They would probably be more successful in pulling this fast one on old people. First-time travelers, especially students may also be vulnerable.

The bottom line is, don't let anyone take your passport away. And if they insist, make sure you specifically show them nothing is on your visa and they must not come back with any ink on it.

See, the con here is to deface your visa, albeit slightly, and get you rattled. Then we will all be confused together on the solution. In the end, we will offer to just help you get through in return for "something".
That first guy had no reason to take her passport away...
Mom appeared at the initial luggage section to weigh. Thereafter, one of the staff at that point collected her passport for an "initial check". Instead of returning it at the spot (I believe), the individual took it inside a room for "confirmation". Upon return of the passport..
She had to quickly call our uncle who just dropped her off. Luckily he was still around the airport premises. When he listened to what had happened and their suggestions, he knew straight away it was a con and gave it to them really hot...
A quick google search would tell you what a revoked visa looks like. It will contain the provision you violated and most times you'd even get an email. He also had to double-check her previous travel tickets to show them she did not overstay at any time...
She was sure that ink was NOT on the visa at least three weeks ago when we booked her flight- she had to check its expiration date then
At this point, one of them started taking her passport around on the pretext of helping
The real ones already know where this would end...
She approached her airline counter, right around this same luggage section, to check-in. Suddenly, they "realized" that her visa wouldn't scan. They all took a look and saw that the visa has been defaced slightly with red ink which looked like NO OK or NOT OK 👇
At this point, a couple of staff from that initial luggage point have joined in the commotion, suggesting absurd but believable explanations for this.
"Aaaa Mommy, maybe your visa was revoked"
"Aaaa maybe you overstayed your visa"
and so on

Do you believe you are good enough to land a funded PhD or Postdoc position?
You don't have to send 100 cold emails if you know what you want and you know how to "follow the money" in your field.
Yesterday, I met with my some of my favs to discuss 2 databases for this purpose.
So if you have to blaze that GRE, volunteer in labs, publish that paper, and attend conferences to get into a quality learning environment, put everything you have into the process NOW!

In fact...
Now, how do you draft a compelling purpose?
To be clear, it is not your dream position as a lecturer/professor or a director of an NGO. There are many lecturers and directors without a PhD.
Instead, think: What solutions will I contribute to as a Professor?

"Education is a service industry. Nigerian lecturers should know that they are occupying those privileged positions mainly because of the availability of students to teach and not the other way round."
Graduate school requires a high level of independence. With all the information flying around here and on YouTube, I personally believe that if you can't do most things on your own, it reeks of laziness and you probably don't deserve the graduate position you seek.

Spot on! However, a FAAN staff gracefully contacted me and suggested we officially file a report. The problem is we have to come IN PERSON to one of the offices at the airport, which will take months to do. Quite sketchy that we can't do these things online if you ask me.
@the_omole
Bro, they will delay you till you have almost missed your flight ni. Then ask you to bring something so they can quickly squeeze you in. Someone had a similar experience in his reply on this thread.
The basic argument of the NIW is to petition the U.S government that you have an extraordinary ability, and/or have received some advanced training in a field, and you have a well-defined future plan that would be of significant merit/benefit to the United States.
Having received 4 fully funded scholarships, including the Chevening scholarship, I'm thrilled to announce that I've started my PhD studies in Biology Saint Louis University, USA.

The orientation many of us get as we enter this great country is about getting married for papers.
Finding willing employers to sponsor you is challenging even for the employers in many ways.
If you can qualify to self-sponsor your green card why wouldn't you try?
I know it is sometimes hard to establish this "why" early on, but the most competitive candidates have purpose statements or goals that address a SPECIFIC problem in their fields.
This goal must align with at least one professor's research interest in the department.
Now that you have an idea of why an excellent application with good grades, publications, and standardized test scores may still not be competitive, let's attempt to rectify this.

Stem cell-derived organoids may conserve molecular and functional aberrations from parent tissue.

@SunkanmiShams
Exactly. Such evil! After letting her go at the counter, she was really worried about how she would explain it at the US port of entry. We were all praying she wouldn't get asked and unnecessarily delayed. Luckily, she wasn't questioned about it.
While my use of "quality" here is relative, I'd suggest that people looking to get a terminal degree (e.g PhD) should strive for R1 universities because they have the best chance to help you achieve all that would be required for this specific green card path.
@deniswirtz
Yes... via the National Interest Waiver, if their ongoing research is in an area that may be considered to be of "National Interest" to the United States.
True o, especially at Master's level. Funding is a bit hard to come by. A friend couldn't get US opportunities in 2019, went to Brazil for MS, and he got five US PhD offers for Fall 2021. In summary, don't be too picky.
As you may imagine, this would require tons of supporting evidence and a defined plan to achieve this. It's not something you'd stumble on and easily qualify for without a plan.
For current or prospective students, here are my top 3 tips that will get you started on this path

I wasn't married when I got my MS admission in the US but I was sure she'd be my wife, on the condition that she'd be willing to beef up her qualifications so she could come study as I did. She took up the challenge, went back to FUTA, excelled, and we got married 3 years after.
2. Before you settle on a project or a field of research in grad school (or for postdoc), ask yourself if the overarching goal of that project and its potential benefits could be argued to be in the National Interest of the USA.
But the most competitive applicants tend to see the program fit as a two-way street. In other words, from your experience, hard and soft skills, what will you potentially add to the program/lab. Don't make them guess. At least one sentence on this may help in your SoP.
During the Christmas break,
@bestman_academy
is developing an NIW training.
We will go deeper into the process, explain HOW TO PLAN for the NIW and its requirements if you're still a student (or Postdoc); and how develop and argue your future plan and other supporting docs.
I earned my NIW with no request for evidence (RFE), which typically means one has a solid petition with no further questions asked.
I must say that the NIW is not for everyone, but many students with a PLAN can do this. And the earlier you start strategizing, the better for you.
Know that the profs reading the application materials have tons of documents to cover from several candidates, and this activity is largely unpaid. So they will surely appreciate brevity and clarity of purpose. Don't make them rack their brain
My next thread will explain how to incorporate this "why" and argue your case in your Statement of Purpose/personal statement. We'll do this paragraph-by-paragraph, hopefully with examples. So follow
@bestmanojo
and hang around for that one.
@instablog9ja
This is when Davido should take a real stand and probably drop this dude. Show some love and respect to rape victims. Show that your label will not support this nonsense. Addressing social ills is not only about cash giveaways. Do this and send a message to others.
I'll stop here. Next time, we'll talk about incorporating these ideas in your SoP. I'm certain these ideas help for admission into US institutions, and may be helpful for other countries.
For more details about the training, you can register here and also see what the NIW looks like:
Please pay attention to all details on the page before registering.

And of course, it is okay if your interests change during or after your studies.
Many folks like
@Soprano_01
&
@TopeAwe2
who have seen our YT SoP lessons would attest that we stressed that this "why" should be clear right from the first paragraph (red highlight- "immediately")👇
47% of African international students are surprised by the good relationships with professors in the USA, vs 29% of Asian international students.
"I was shocked at how respectful professors were to students; it was the opposite of my home country."
Tomorrow is Sunday. Again, you'll be asked to pray to Jesus for our leaders. It is mostly useless IMO.
Rather, pray to have enough "sane citizens" who would participate in the next voting process to choose the right leaders.
God has given you the freedom to choose. Do your job.
This is because your ability to achieve your proposed future plan for the NIW will be judged largely based off your prior/current work and your achievements.
As a grad student or postdoc, it may be helpful if the work you will/have committ/ed to is funded by federal agencies since the US government will likely not fund what is not in their interests.
I'd like to reiterate that the loudest voice is not always the best voice. The # of followers does not confer all-round knowledge. Your question may be best answered by someone in your field or with the same scholarship you hope to get. Find them here or on LinkedIn.
3. If you are in grad school already, just know that you cannot afford to hide all through your studies. You must get in the mix of activities and competitions within and mostly outside your campus. For folks in this group, I have something for you.
The ENERGY when you just landed in the USA for your PhD in Neuroscience and Physiology at Illinois State University. Everything put together in 6 months! Proud of you and I'm sure you'd kill it.
