The paper is finally out!
@kayleighasmith_
brilliantly extends the identity leadership literature by showing how leadership being present and engaging in their staff's tasks helps them to understand staff's challenges and to facilitate ways for staff to achieve their goals.
You know UK academia is broken when staff working to the hours stated in their contracts is a threat. It shows how normalised over-working has become to keep universities running. I'll see you on the picket lines.

Good morning from the Edinburgh picket line! Our pensions got smaller so our pickets got bigger. We're still here striking for fair and equal pay. Arrived to find the students have blocked access to college in support!

Congratulations to the six Edinburgh academics who have been awarded Future Leader Fellowships. The
@UKRI_News
scheme propels research tackling global challenges and brings innovative ideas to market.
A female Prof recently gave me excellent career advice that I want to share for other ECRs. She advised I decide what I want to be the go-to person for in 10yrs and to say no to projects that don't excite me. It's helped me immensely in focusing my research and learning to say no
*DON'T CROSS THE VIRTUAL PICKET*! Don't email about work and don't post about work on social media. It's breaking the strike, suggests you don't support the strike, and emailing gives people striking a backlog of work for days that they won't be paid for.

I am beyond ecstatic to announce that I've been promoted to Senior Lecturer in Social Psychology at
@UoE_Psychology
, starting 1st August! I feel very grateful to everyone who encouraged me to apply and who supported my application. Woop woop! ๐ฅณ
ECRs - let's agree to work together to change the competitive nature of academia? More supporting ideas, promoting one another, and opposition to the businessification of academia that tries to turn us into competitors. Working collectively is better for us and our disciplines!
Absolutely thrilled to announce that I have been offered a position as Lecturer in Social Psychology at the University of Edinburgh! Very excited to get started in August!
I'm so grateful for this award, thank you
@socialpsychUK
! ๐ This award is very special to me because I'm continually in awe of all the excellent work by ECRs in social psychology and grateful to be part of such a supportive community. Can't wait to see you all at the conference!
We are delighted to announce that

New year, new home owners! Celebrating 6 years with this wonderful human and getting the keys to our first home this week. We're delighted to finally be based in Edinburgh. We love that we can see the castle from our window - it's just blocked by T's head in this pic ๐๐๐โค๏ธ
I was updating my CV and realised that the total sum of research grants I've been awarded this year reaches just shy of ยฃ1.3million. I feel so lucky have brilliant colleagues who let me join their great projects and/or agreed to join my projects! This feels very surreal!
Happy Wednesday, all! I'm thrilled to announce that I'm joining the team of Associate Editors at the British Journal of Social Psychology ๐ BJSP is one of my favourite journals so I can't wait to get involved in AE duties for new and exciting research.
Just submitted a 139 page grant application that brings together 18 partners across the EU involved in emergency services, crowd psychology, pedestrian modelling, and VR testing and training. I've been working on this since November. Time to celebrate with a well earned dram!
I've switched on my automatic out of office reply, uninstalled Outlook from my phone, and had my partner hide my laptop and charger in separate locations. I'm now officially on holiday! I'm off to drink hot choc, walk the pup, knit, and read fun books. Happy holidays everyone!๐
I got to speak to
@SkyNews
about the crowd psychology behind fan experience at Taylor Swift concerts and the community both Taylor and fans create around the Eras Tour. Career highlight being on a split screen with Taylor Swift!
#EdinburghTStheErasTour
@EdinUniCAHSSres
I start my fellowship today! I get to spend 4 years digging into how and why the public react to first responder guidance in emergencies, and exploring how we can simulate these intergroup dynamics in evacuation models. I could not be more excited and grateful! Watch this space๐ฅณ

In this article for The Psychologist I outline 7 recommendations that supervisors can take to create inclusive environments for their students, focused on addressing persisting inequalities in social psychology and how we can improve the discipline by supporting future academics
โWe cannot continue to be part of environments that perpetuate inequalityโโฆ
@DrAnneTempleton
has suggestions to build inclusive supervision environments.
My
#openaccess
paper 'Future research avenues to facilitate social connectedness and safe collective behavior at organized crowd events' is out! I cover practical challenges for organisers, research topics & how we can work together to improve crowd safety
Just realised that I submitted my thesis 5 years ago today! Today I launched my website showing my brilliant research team and our projects. A lot can happen in 5 years!
Good to know that universities still prioritise deducting strike pay from workers during this global pandemic, while simultaneously relying on the good faith of those workers to keep the universities running as well as possible.
@ucuedinburgh
Delighted to say that (as of yesterday) I'm now Programme Director for the MSc in Social Psychology at
@UoE_Psychology
. I'm very excited to welcome the new cohort next week!
My first forster carer told me I would never excel at anything academic and that I thought I was better at school than I actually was. I start my job as lecturer in social psychology next month.
I just took 2 full weeks off work for first time in ~6 years. It was wonderful. I learned to cook new dishes with my partner, took my dog on many walks, spent time with family, read two good books, and caught up on sleep. My new decade's resolution is to have many more holidays.
We had to say goodbye to Spud today. She was the sweetest, best furball and I am very grateful that she let me be her human, take her on adventures, and for all the joy and happy memories she gave me. Rest well, perfect puppy. You are deeply loved โค๏ธ
I had great fun taking part in this discussion about what brings people together at crowd events and how feeling part of a group with others impacts our experience and behaviour. Also squeezed in some shots about le Bon being a bigot. Tune in to hear more!
Why do we change our behaviour when weโre in a crowd? And why do some crowds make us feel more confident, or connected? Researchers believe crowds can have a psychological impact on us - hereโs whyโฆ
More on Deeply Human:
When lockdown started I had many grand plans. I was going to build a website, improve my French, improve my R skills, write papers.
What I have actually achieved: I now take 1 sugar in my tea instead of 2. Not something I planned - I'm just too lazy to buy more sugar.
Please excuse the self-promotion but my keynote is now on youtube! If you want to hear about how we can use empirical research and theory on group processes to inform pedestrian models of collective behaviour then check out the video below!
I'm having a great 34th birthday. The sun is shining, I got beautiful flowers and messages, tended to the fruit and herbs in my garden, went for a run by the beach, swam in the sea, and now I'm going home to eat ice cream and birthday cake made by Thibault. Life is very good ๐ฅฐ
I was having one of those 'eugh, I feel like I haven't achieved anything today' days but then I received teaching award nominations for supervisor of the year. Pretty sure most people get nominated but the kind statements from my students just made my heart so happy! ๐ฅฐ

Low work productivity today.
- Realised my notes are in the kitchen
- Went to kitchen
- Washed dishes
- Watered plants
- Made a berry smoothie
- Cleaned kitchen surfaces
- Made a snack for my partner
- Left without the notes I went in for
- Wrote this instead of getting the notes
Today I submitted a 138 page funding proposal. Huge thanks to all the consortium partners for their help getting the proposal over the submission finish line! ๐ Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be sleeping until the beginning of the new academic year.
Have excellent computational modelling skills and a passion for understanding how groups respond to emergencies? Come and do a funded PhD with me! EU and international applicants very welcome. Apply at . Please do get in touch if you have any questions.
Great first in-person meeting to welcome
@Selinn_Tekinn
and Jennie Portice as they start their postdoc positions for our project on the dynamics of protests at COP26.
Tomorrow I'm giving my first lecture on my new Social Psychology of Identities course. I've refined the lectures endlessly, I've uploaded all the materials, assessment information, etc. I'm very excited. I hope the students enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed making it!
My soon to be mother-in-law wants to watch Eurovision with me tonight, and we have wine, strawberries and chantilly cream. I'm marrying into the best family.
This is your reminder to take a holiday. I didn't realise how tired out I was until I spent a week reviving my soul by climing high hills, swimming in crystal clear water, and snorkling in caves.
Our paper 'Social norms, social identities and the COVID-19 pandemic: Theory and recommendations' now has a volume and issue number! You can read it here: Cc

I really dislike the shift in academia towards needing to show research 'independence'. Academia is a much better environment to work in when we collaborate with good people, and science benefits from it.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be doing no work for the rest of the year.
My partner walked into the room and said 'I just saw an interview with Taylor Swift for the first time. I didn't realise it before but she's so intelligent and talented! She's very funny!'
It took 5 years but now I can finally propose to him.
Today is my 30th birthday. I feel very lucky because I've been sent hilarious voice and video messages from friends across the globe, and been bought a few too many cocktails here in Edinburgh. Thank you for keeping me laughing all day. Here's to a great decade ahead ๐ฅ๐
I'm open to PhD applications in crowd psychology for 2019 start. See the link for info on funding applications and details about my research interests. Email me at a.templeton

Anyone else getting headaches from constantly staring at their computer screen? I used to get breaks during in-person meetings but now it's constant screen time.
My weekend will be dedicated to jigsaw puzzles, gardening, and reading books. I need a break from screens!
Since we're striking, me and some of my research team wanted to make baked goods to thank hospital workers in Edinburgh for all their amazing work. What started out as a plan to hand out a few cakes turned into over 400 sweet treats being delivered today! Thank you
#NHS
workers!
3 cheers for students who supported the virtual picket by holding off emailing questions during the strike, or had phrases in their emails like 'I know you're on strike so I don't expect a reply until after'. ๐๐๐๐
My incredibly thoughtful and super talented love created some illustrations of us for my birthday. Here are some of the sketches he made. I love them so much!
Stay with me...
I'm enjoying research more than ever and feel very grateful for brilliant colleagues and students. In 7 months, we've produced 7 journal articles, 1 editorial, 3 technical reports, 1 magazine article, 14 conference or gov presentations, and I've been promoted. BUT
My partner's meat-loving French family have made an entirely vegetarian Christmas dinner for me. They also bought a kettle and tea strainer so that I can have a morning cuppa. That's it folks, I'm officially in. Merry Christmas everyone!
That's a wrap on
#spsconf
! I'm *very* proud of how well the excellent Identities & Collective Behaviour students and research staff presented their exciting work. I'm honoured to have received the ECR award, and am very touched by the chocolates and card from my generous team! ๐
I'm hiring a postdoc for 3yrs to examine how first responder instructions impact citizen adherence. It will involve running evacuation expts then developing & testing a group processes computer model parameter. International applicants very welcome. Pls RT
I'm excited for the BPS SPS conference and lucky to be organising it with the brilliant

I automatically assumed I would spend the weekend catching up with marking. Then I remembered that I'm working to contract. Instead of spending my Friday night marking, I went to the cinema with friends from the department and had a great time!
Non-work achievement! It took 4 months but I'm finally back to my pre-covid running distance and even knocked 5 mins off my best time! I realise this is probably slow to many of you but I have short legs so it's a lot of steps to get to 10k ๐
