Asked husband if he had any elastic bands, and he immediately said, yes, he had ‘three.’ He goes into the living room and lifts a cushion on the settee and lying in the dust are exactly three elastic bands. He looked really pleased with himself. I can’t stop thinking about it.

This is heartbreaking. I grew up dependent on hot school dinners: some days my mother was too unwell to provide. I am immensely grateful to British people for not letting me go hungry. For reminding this wee boy that he was seen and valued, and that he was worth caring about.

Tonight conservative MPs voted against extending lunch vouchers for school children. Let’s put it another way: they voted for 2.4m children in England to go hungry. Some days my school lunch was the only meal I got. This government is disgusting.

I've just finished #YoungMungo by @Doug_D_Stuart . I genuinely think this is one of the greatest books I've ever read. A cast of unforgettable characters. Tightly written prose. It was deeply affecting. I loved it more than Shuggie Bain which is also phenomenal. April 2022.

I toured all the major Irish festivals, and then spent another week touring the smaller towns from Ennis to Drogheda. (I ate a lot of cheese toasties)... And yet my hometown of Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, cannot have a literature festival? That's unacceptable...

I visited St Petersburg a little while ago. One of the things that floored me was the scale of loss and the horrors that Russians faced during WWII, when they bravely resisted the Axis invasion. I’m so thankful to every Russian who is marching for peace in Ukraine tonight. 🕊
